I would recommend the PAT Track app instead, it's made by someone on this sub, lightweight, and shows every bus and route on a map. You can tap on the stop to see when the next bus will get there or tap the bus to see when it will get to its next few stops.
I've liked PAT Track (Android) for real time data.
Route planning is best done through Google Maps.
I've used the app Pat Track for years. It is so convenient and reliable. Here is a link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rectangledbmi.com.pittsburghrealtimetracker&hl=en
You just select the routes you want, and it'll show you a colorful line of its route as well as where the buses are. If you click on a particular bus stop, it tells you when the next buses will arrive.
And with real-time GPS tracking of all busses, it's now possible to hang out inside while waiting and only pop out to the bus stop when the bus is a minute or two away. I get tons of mileage (heh) out of the PAT Realtime Tracker app on Android. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rectangledbmi.com.pittsburghrealtimetracker
Also, for Android, there is an app called PAT Track, if you click on the bus route, it maps the route as well as the bus location.
I don't know if there is a similar one for Apple products.
I'm the [PAT Track](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rectangledbmi.com.pittsburghrealtimetracker&hl=en\_US&gl=US) developer. Yes, I'm now a CMU student!
I'm very skeptical of the long term viability of React Native. You might want to reconsider using something else, ex. Flutter. I can give you tips. I'll email you.
For those with Android smart phones, nay I suggest PAT tracker. Works for me and shows me all buses in real time and their routes.

I've used PAT track several times and it's consistently accurate with arrival times because it uses the busses own GPS tracking.

I don't always ride busses, but when I do, I use PAT Track.

Try PAT Realtime Tracker - I think it has the features you'd like. Play Store info
The Highmark building has a food court and shopping area. These two floors are also called Fifth Avenue Place. It's a great location, and it's also near Market Square. Market Square has plenty of food, but the lines are much longer at lunch.
Highmark is on the edge of the cultural district, which has theaters for plays, musicals, symphonies, etc.
You can definitely use Port Authority buses to get around. Make sure to download the app on your phone called PAT Realtime Tracker to see live GPS locations of where the buses are on their routes.
If you have any Android phone, PAT Track is where it's at.

You're right that not all routes are equal, but I linked to the schedule. If you know what you're getting into, it's perfectly feasible. The timing can suck, and depending on your schedule it may not work. But the buses and trolleys run in all weather, and it's pretty rare that they just outright cancel a route.
There's a trade-off. Closer to downtown, easier access, more expensive. Out in an area around a strip mall? Super easy access to everything you'd need, PITA to get anywhere else. You can survive and thrive anywhere. Especially if you have a smart phone, PAT has a twitter account, and another one just for alerts. And there's at least one bus tracking app for the city.
Don't get me wrong, being able to get a ride once or twice a month for a big shop is certainly useful, even if you use the bus for everything else. But with uber and instacart and so on, it's not really unlivable anywhere in the city.
Personally, I'd recommend a place in the middle, with a corner grocery. One that lets you take an outbound bus to a Giant Eagle or an inbound bus downtown to anywhere else. Like Sheraden or the West End, you got the busway and you can get out to Carnegie and such. Or Bellevue or anywhere towards McKees Rocks, those tend to be lively.
That's what I look for living in the city, I hate it when the sidewalks roll up at sundown. I need at least a gas station nearby, and ideally I'd like a 24-hour restaurant. If you find a quiet neighborhood near an off-ramp you can usually get that.
There's the same kind of thing on the eastern side of the city, someone coming here to go to school might do better over towards Squirrel Hill.
PAT Realtime Tracker is my favorite on Android.
