Here is a very simple pedometer app that allows exporting the data to a CSV file. It is also open source and available on F-Droid. I have used it in the past, but there have been some reports of it not working well on Pie. It's still worth a try in my opinion.
Nexus 5 is one of those few phones that are packed with enormous amount of sensors, and pedometer is one of them.

This app was written specifically for Nexus 5 and it uses built in pedometer, so it doesn't drain battery.
Pedometer (link) is pretty straightforward and gets the job done. I've been using it for a bit, and have noticed absolutely no battery impact on a Nexus 5x.
Just a warning that there is Google Play games integration, but from what I can tell, logging in is completely optional and there's an option in the preferences to log out if you happen to log in.
I haven't used an app based step counter for quite some time now as my watch does it instead. I used to use this one that was fairly simple and uncluttered and should use the hardware step counter which doesn't use very much battery at all: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.pedometer&hl=en_GB&gl=US
I think the Google Fit app can also do step tracking on the phone, so that's another option.
I suggest running a constant background app like the pedometer app. it will always show a notification and it uses almost no battery because it uses the Qualcomm built-in step counter and polls it infrequently.
app is open source, extremely simple, does not require any permissions, and finally has not needed to be updated since 2019 which shows just how simple and functional it is. :-) works fine on my Android 12 updated stylus 5G 2021 and the only time I see the big clock is upon a first boot when it is not running.

Awesome stuff and I totally agree. Out of curiosity, what do you do to keep yourself occupied during the walks?
/u/watergoddesss, get a free pedometer app (like this one if you're on Android) and read: https://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/news/20190529/do-you-really-need-10000-steps-a-day
Hit 5,900-7,500+ and you're good. I'm a firm believer in the idea that we don't have to sweat for decent long-term fitness as long as we're constantly moving.
10,000 steps is roughly 5 miles, so it depends on how fast you walk or run.
FWIW, I have a phone with a built-in step counter and there's a free android app that uses it (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.pedometer) and I find that just wandering around work for 8 hours gives me 2,000 steps (so it must count half steps, and shifting from one leg to the other), then I'll take a longish walk at lunch to get another mile, leaving me with about 3 miles in the evening which is often for me, either an hour on a treadmill, walking, or an hour walking around the embarcadero or marina or by mission bay. Often times, walking around Costco is 2,000 steps or so.
So for me, after the typical day's activities, about an hour to get 6,000 steps.
the 10,000 steps fitness movement has no scientific basic to say, 10,000 steps itself is beneficial, but an hour or so of cardio a day is generally regarded as beneficial.
Since mid-October, by getting up to 10,000 steps a day and on some days 13-15K steps, and by cutting out many sugars, I've lost 20 pounds, if I lose another 20 pounds by BMI scales I will be "normal" and not overweight.

I've been using it for a year, minimal but works really good for me
I use this pedometer app. Fairly accurate and uses your gyroscope to count the steps.

I use a different Pedometer. Seems to do the job.
