I also haven't found an app based on Google News sources that implements dark mode to the actual news articles.
My workaround:
Instead of clicking on the article I ...
click on the ... menu next to the article
click on share
select Reedy
Yes it's 2 extra clicks but it saves my eyeballs and also offers text-to-speech and speed reading if I want.

Reedy. J'utilisais l'extension pour Chrome, il me semble que c'était compatible avec les pdf, et en voyant ton poste, je viens de découvrir l'app androïd!
You can try Reedy Intelligent reader (Android application, Chrome extension). It is one of the best implementations of RSVP method. I read with it for two years and it's really a very cool way to read faster.
Thousands of people use it every day (know, because I am the developer :)
In order not to lose comprehension you just need to increase speed very gradually and only when the previous one is getting too slow for you.
I use the android app Reedy. Its not for actual audiobooks but for text files/links. But because a lot of novels don't have an audiobook variant and only text webpages, it is really usefull for people that read novels. With the app you can load web pages like a novel. It only loads the actual text and the buttons for the previous and next chapter. Then I use the text-to-speech option and that way every novel I read is an audiobook :)
I'm interested in a few features you can see in Reedy. Primarily, gradual acceleration to the set speed, displaying the context of the word that's currently in focus, and the ability to swap to the full text for rewinding, navigating, context investigation, etc.
Reedy is my favorite. They also make a good Android app, if you have the Play Store on your device.
Reedy is a great app for this on the play store. You can use it with any file, or paste any link or text and choose any speed. It's very versatile and helpful. It's also free.

This is what I do. I use Reedy (Android) which has a paste function. Usually I have the post on a private subreddit already, I copy and paste the text into Reedy and open up the Edit on Reddit. Using a private subedit is a way I can make sure my posts are formatted the way I like them but also I can fix any errors.
Whenever I hear something wrong I use the button on my headphones to pause the reader and since I have the edit window already open I fix it before I continue. It's great because I'll read something 8 times and think I'm good to go but when I hear it back, I'll notice places I need punctuation, misspellings and grammar errors. I'm kind of an idiot because I'll edit something and start adding things to the wrong part of a sentence. Like two or three words behind when I meant to do so... So now the sentence makes no sense and I read it over and over and think "this looks good" but then Reedy tells me to fuck off because it's not ready yet...
Another thing that drives me crazy is if an author uses the same words over and over again... For instance:
"He looked at his hands. They were covered in blood. The blood tricked down his hands and pooled in his palms. The strangest thing was that he didn't feel any pain in his hands at all."
Like, how many times are you going to remind me that we are talking about the man's hands? I think we get it the first time. It doesn't flow well. Hearing it read to you will really help you see that. Maybe you should take two of those "hands" out because your reader gets it? I really like this app for that. You won't use the same words over and over again. It forces you to be more creative...
Another app I use is Pocket (both Android and iPhone) but your post has to be posted and public to use that one I think. I use that to edit my website and also read all my favorite authors when they post. I have too many favorites and not enough time so I put them in my "Pocket" and listen to them while I go about my day.
There are a bunch. I like Reedy, for Android.
I don't know whether it's the best but I enjoy using Reedy

Reedy. Intelligent reader: I believe it goes down to 50 words per minute.
