Thanks for the reply, I did manage to find something that is a somewhat alternative, it's called Sayit it's basically an app that allows you to "share" any body of text to it, which it'll then dictate back to you using Google TTS, it also works in the background. But it has a major downside compared to Joey's system, in that it doesn't have the ability to read through entire theads seemlessly, you have to share each clipping of text separately which gets cumbersome.
