I settled on CalcTastic if anybody's curious. It has a nice design, several layouts and themes, is tiny (2.5 MB), no ads and no shenanigans (you can buy the $1 version as a thank you to the developer, it comes with Programmer's mode and a few extra themes).
I was a big user in the past but was always annoyed by the lack of multiline. Sometimes I want to see the formula I'm typing or break in multiple steps my calculation and see the history in the main view. 144 calculator apps tested later I found CalcTastic. It's got all the same features (as far as I can tell from my electrical engineer's perspective) but multiline + themable: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shaytasticsoftware.calctasticfree
These apps run on all my devices, from day one:
CalcTastic, a lovely calculator. Uses a stack like my good old hp 48
CalenGoo, one of the most configurable calendars out there. Might not be the most beautiful one, but the most useful
F-Stop allows you to exif-tag photos. I use it along with dropsync to keep my photos in sync
Fuelio is a nicely made fuel tracker
Keepass2Android is maybe too well known for this list
Libra tracks my weight, that's it
Multiling O Keyboard is a keyboard that doesn't use any cloud service and offers myriads of config options
