There are several android video players that will do side by side video with almost any video type.
Side-By-Side Video is free and VR Player has both a free and pro version ($1.99).
you you want to view a normal movie in SBS format without using the cardboard sdk to reduce system load?
not a bad idea although I think it might be difficult to watch since the video will take up the whole screen which means you'll be looking around a lot to try and take it all in... like sitting in the front row at the theater.
This claims to do what you want but without testing I can't be sure it's not triggering the cardboard sdk and is just a plain video player, but you can check it out.
Watched Twitch on Android phone using TC Viewer & Side-By-Side Video Player which are in the GooglePlay store. Not bad but could better. Make sure you install the Side-By-Side Video Player first.

Please reply if you find a better Android apps. I predict Twitch will built this feature into the Android Twitch app soon.
So far, the only solution I've come across for Gear VR is using Bubble UPNP and then load videos with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.funghisoft.sbsvideoplayer
Unfortunately, this app hasn't been updated in ages and doesn't have the proper audioncodecto play 90% of files. Also obviously no head tracking.
My goal was to be able to watch my Plex library on the Gear VR.
any recommendations for a cardboard video app that works with a bluetooth controller? i've been using Side By Side video player but it only registers the back key, FF/RW don't work on my sixaxis paired PS3 controller. i would prefer something that shows only the video, i don't care for that sitting in a theater with empty seats look.
i would worry about scratching the 6P taking it out/putting it in repeatedly, it's far from a gentle process. i bought a cheap fake leather vinyl skin from slickwraps specifically to address this since the main reason i got the 6P was for VR.
youtube can convert any video to cardboard ready, as can plenty of apps in the store. i like to use side by side video player for videos on my local network storage. it's great for POV pornography and space zooms. most VR video players have a background like you're in a theater or some other cheesy filler, SBS is just a black background so the video is floating in space, great for the true blacks from an OLED like the 6P. SBS also has format toggles for different zoom levels or full immersive viewing. i am still looking for a good black background VR video app with good controls. SBS doesn't really work when paired with a bluetooth controller like the PS3.
I also have the drift problem on my Note 4 but since I moved to SBS video player it's not an issue anymore. I stream video from PC with ES File Explorer.
strange. I also have an s6 and i had no issues installing it. Is this the one you tried? (i probably should have include links above): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.funghisoft.sbsvideoplayer
vlc supports cardboard?
AFAIK it doesnt work with cardboard.
You may be able to download it and play it with SBS player( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.funghisoft.sbsvideoplayer&hl=en) or your cardboard supported video player of choice but not vlc unless Im missing a cardboard supported version of vlc that doesnt show up on google
Most of my sessions involve selfbondage, and I just don't really like to go into details because selfbondage can be very dangerous (see http://www.boundanna.com/ if interested), and I don't want anyone to get hurt or killed because of something I said.
But here's what I've done for SBS:
On my spare Android phone:
I use this app for playing: Side-By-Side Video Player
It doesn't support playlists, so I just use a video editor to string a bunch of hypnos together and export to a single .mp4 file.
Copy to SD card and insert.
It's so easy to find smartphone VR headsets these days... I saw the potential for this use the moment Google Cardboard came out, and I Kickstarted one of the early comfortable headsets for this purpose alone. Anything you like will work. Just be sure that it doesn't chafe anywhere if you start... moving. I actually put a little athletic tape on the bridge of my nose to protect it.
I use athletic tape to secure earbuds and the straps of the goggles.
[Selfbondage]
On my iPhone:
I use the Folder Lock app, since there's no external storage on the iPhone, and I don't need a bunch of smut anywhere where people might accidentally see it on my phone. It plays as well as stores, so it's really convenient.
Folder Lock also doesn't go down a playlist, so I have to string those together, too. However, it doesn't do SBS video, either, so I do that editing all in Final Cut Pro.
SBS Video Player : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.funghisoft.sbsvideoplayer
Side by Side Video Player doesn't do any head-tracking, just presents a 2D movie duplicated for each eye.
VRTV and VR Theatre for Cardboard both have a feature where a tap or magnet pull will move the display to be in front of your face.
Edit: Missed the bit where you were specifically asking about 180-degree half-dome video, SBS Video player won't work with that, but VRTV and VR Theatre for Cardboard will.
I use an app called side by side video player and I believe this is what you are looking for.
I like to use a SBS player for movies so it's always centered.

When you open a video use this instead of your default video player.
