this one. it's freeware that doesn't have invasive ads, plus it gets past paywalls. there's us news from both parties, international news, business, tech, plus a bunch of other stuff I don't use (sports, lifestyle, etc.). would definitely recommend!

Parses the articles and presents you with a plaintext no bullshit version of the article (works properly 95%of the time).
Smart News
I'll bet there's an IOS version, but I can't figure out how to browse the app store via internet browser.
I know I'm a day late to this but:
SmartNews is a great app that aside from having categories (Like Sports, Entertainment, Lifestyle, etc) that gather from multiple sources (Reuters, CNN, Fox for example), you can add social media (Though I don't know how it works exactly since I haven't bothered trying it out), as well as look for specific news sources and add those as tabs.
Another great thing is it has a "Smart reader" mode, which displays just the text version of the news. It still has some issues with some sites (Tech Insider, for example. won't show slides content while in smart mode) but you can always switch back to normal mode.
On the other hand, if you want video news, there's Watchup. It shows short video news but it's great for catching up without having to read or even look at the screen since you can just listen to them. However, this has more of a focus on US, or had back when I used it, but of course has international news, just probably not "local" if you're outside the US. A good thing about this is it can autoplay the next video without need to click, so you can leave it there while you sit back and watch some news.
Both of them let you program if you want notifications at certain times so there's that too.
Also try the SmartNews app (it's available for both Android and iOS). It's made by Japanese developers so if you change the language settings inside the app to Japanese, you can read Japanese news, and they have a manga section with free daily manga chapters.
Although, I think the manga section only appears if you're reading on a tablet device, like an iPad or Android tablet. On my phone, I don't think I see the manga section.
I initially just read the app to practice reading news but I slowly started getting addicted to the free manga.
I'm not familiar with News+, but I've been using SmartNews for years. Many news categories and news sources to choose from. Link is below.

SmartNews
SmartNews perhaps? While it has support for connecting your social media accounts, you don't have to in order to use the app.
Not material design, but I love SmartNews

I'm enjoying Swipe, too! I downloaded Smart News a few days ago and really like it.
It compiles top news articles from multiple news companies into one app. I use it every morning.
videogames:
I also like to read IGN Japan: https://jp.ign.com/
IGN Japan also has a good podcast that I often used for listening immersion. They have a videogame podcast and a TV/movie podcast (mainly focusing on western media, like Netflix shows, Marvel movies, indie films, etc). Their YouTube channel is good too.
For anime figures, there's https://hobby.dengeki.com/
I don't know if it's the most popular figurine site, but I found it via my SmartNews app. They had an article that featured this awesome figurine of Kate Bishop.
If you're ready to move on from NHK News Web Easy, try downloading the Smart News app (Android / iOS), which aggregates news from different websites across a variety of subjects (headline news, politics, lifestyle, anime, technology, etc). In the settings, switch to Japan, so the news feed will be from Japanese sources. If you read it on a tablet (like an iPad) instead of a phone, they'll also be a tab on the main menu for free daily manga to read.
This works well for me. No ads.

Goto app for news that seems to be balanced.
I haven't actually used it, but SmartNews has been recommended here before.
