I don't know how popular they are overall, but this was a hit with my kids when they were little, very easy controls and fun fast game play for kids with short attention spans: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sega.sonicdash&hl=en
> To call it "unprecedented, unanticipated popularity" is to call Niantic the most grossly incompetent business of this century.
The thing is, and I've played a little bit of Ingress but not enough to really comment, a lot of Ingress players would agree with this. It seems to them, and to me, that they made a little shallow reskin of Ingress (which was famous as the first cool AR game, but not all that big in terms of regular player base) and expected it to be a quirky F2P with a big IP of the sort that get released all the time to no great fanfare (see another great 90s franchise). But Pokemon Go reached a critical mass of interest (thanks initially to those fun AR screenshots of Pokemon in fun places) that kicked it into talkshow levels of attention. The number of apps that have reached that level of publicity could be counted on fingers. Now we have hundreds of millions of players engaged every day and users demanding cool new features with the depth of a normal, 'official' Pokemon release.
It's already been done, twice, with sequels.
The first 2 I linked are some decent fun, they're not terrible at least. Never played either of the sequels though.
Hmmm... Hard to find one that's small and not updated for 18:9.
