Check out Cory Trese's games, they're all turn-based with deep strategic elements. All of these games come with free and extensive demos which already are large games in themselves, and if you can spare any money to buy the full versions, do so, I've never regretted a purchase. Star Traders 4X Empires in particular is excellent, a typical 4x game set in space (think Masters of Orion, except without some of the more advanced features). Templar Assault is worth checking out as well, as you play as a squad of space marines storming alien and pirate infested starships, which requires careful positioning and movement, as well as conservation of resources such as ammo. Their new SRPG, Heroes of Steel, follows the story of a small group of heroes making their way through a post-apocalyptic world, and plays in a similar fashion to Templar Assault (but still unique enough to remain worth a try). Finally, there is also Star Traders RPG, which pits you as a lone starship captain in a wide open sandbox, letting you do whatever you want (e.g. blockading planets, trading fuel peacefully, raiding ancient temples or taking out bounties).
Linkme: Star Traders RPG, Star Traders 4X Empires, Heroes of Steel, Templar Assault
Ambition of the Slimes is also another great game, very similar to FFT, except the perspective flip that leaves you in control of the slimes! Despite the dated graphics, this game is extremely addictive and quite difficult (in my opinion). The challenges in particular seem impossible without a high level slime team.

Give star traders a try you might like it. It's largely text based but very in depth. I'd recommend anything from the Trese Brothers to scratch that deep RPG itch.

The game has been out forever and they still update it. They have a history of really supporting their games, and their games on android are proper games unlike a lot of the dreck on the mobile platforms.

I like the travel log idea. I wonder how to make it more engaging - so it's not only about things happening to the player but about things that player do/can do.
My brain immediate went back to the old Palm Pilot days... and now the new Android days:

I thought you were talking about this! Now I will be looking at that link to see what your Star Trader is all about ;)
Cheers!
Well it's not EXACTLY in the 40k setting, but but Trese Brothers have a handful of awesome android and PC RPG games, check out Star traders RPG and Star traders frontiers. This have been some of my favourite games forever.
Oh, make sure you also check battle templars for a deathwatch feel.
You can chose a pirate, explorer, merchant, spy strategy, have your own crew even fight the xeno
Well, there is the obvious namesake :) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.corytrese.games.startraders
Pirates and Traders has a similar trading ability between places with a non-space theme: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.micabyte.android.pirates I enjoyed it for a good run or three.
I have this question, too. I looked up the Star Traders games that were mentioned.
There are three titles now from the developers (Trese Brothers): The original turn-based Star Traders RPG (released October 2010, updated February 2019); turn-based Star Traders 4X Empires (released June 2014, updated November 2016); and the new Star Traders: Frontiers (released January 2019, updated July 2019).
About Star Traders RPG: Star Traders is a turn-based strategy role playing game (RPG) inspired by games such as Space Trader, Master of Orion, Elite and many other classic titles. If you enjoy retro games, adventure and tactics games, Action RPG or Sci-fi RPG with complex depth like Master of Orion, you may enjoy the Star Traders space trading simulation.
About Star Traders 4X Empires: Take command of humanity’s last survivors and rebuild an empire among the stars. In this immersive turn-based strategy game, you must lead the refugees of the great Exodus to a new home in hostile space and build a new galaxy-spanning civilization. To survive in the dark reaches of space, you will have to fight to protect your people, control rival factions, and unlock lost technology. … This challenging civilization-building game expands upon the universe of the original Star Traders RPG. As the leader of a splinter group who have fallen behind the main fleet, you have no choice but to settle nearby habitable worlds, stake your claim and try to prosper. (4X Empires takes place concurrent with RPG.)
About Star Traders: Frontiers: Our very first game, Star Traders RPG, took hundreds of thousands of gamers on an interstellar adventure. Star Traders’ success and overwhelmingly positive reception helped to launch Trese Brothers Games. It was the adventures of our community’s star-crossed captains that put us on a trajectory to share more of our worlds, ideas, and dreams. … We set out to capture the loneliness, bravery, and camaraderie of people living together in a spaceship sailing across the stars. It is with great pride that after releasing four other games in the Star Traders universe, we’ve created a sequel to the original Star Traders RPG. … Step onto the bridge of your starship, take to the stars, and create your own story in Star Traders: Frontiers.

Here's a list I had written in response to another post. This is assuming you have Android (most of these games are on iOS though as well)
Edit: Puzzle and Dragons requires internet, sorry about that :/
Star Traders Frontiers is Star Traders 2
Here's Star Traders 1, it's solo. Just you and your ship https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.corytrese.games.startraders
also Space RPG 3: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.esaptonor.spacerpg3
Battlevoid Harbinger: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fi.bugbyte.harbinger
As you mentioned Star Traders: Frontiers, there is the game before Frontiers that has a free, limited demo on a small galaxy map you can try. There is an IAP in the demo to unlock the full, paid version, or you can just get the full version. You normally unlock things like new starting ships by playing the game, but there were optional IAPs to unlock things faster. I wouldn't recommend it, though. Unlocking the stuff is most of the challenge of the game. No ads in either game.
Star Traders is one of those games where you can mostly do whatever you want and you make up challenges for yourself. Want to be a pirate and steal from Civilians? Do that. Want to be a merchant and figure out which goods you can buy low on one planet to sell high on another? Do that. Want to be a military officer for one of the syndicates and fight against other houses? Do that. I had fun being an explorer and searching planets for alien artifacts, then having a fast enough ship to smuggle the goods past patrols, mostly avoiding combat and being searched. There is some survival aspects in things like making sure you don't run out of fuel and other resource management. If you get into combat it is turn based.
Another space themed game is Out There. This game is hard and you'll repeatedly die/lose, hopefully each time learning a little so you can do better next time. Each time you start over, you'll get a new star map. Lots of resource management type of survival. When the game gives you choices and I don't recall there ever being a time limit on deciding, so the game is basically turn based. Premium game, no ads, no IAPs.
Another game. If you've never played the web game A Dark Room, you could check out the Android port. It doesn't look like much to begin with, but it slowly turns into a resource management thing, then you're exploring a world, and more, but I don't want to spoil anymore about it. It's been awhile since I played this, but later in the game when you get into combat, I'm pretty sure I remember it being turn based. No ads, no IAPs. Here's the original browser version if you wanted to play it on your computer.

You can try Star Traders RPG: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.corytrese.games.startraders It's expecially good if you like trading games.
If you want to run RPGs on an especially weak phone, try stuff from Cory Trese . I have fond memories of playing Star Traders Elite on an LG Optimus Elite, which had an abysmal 1GB storage.
Any relation to the Android Games? Guessing it's just a very well trafficked name.
