It's more like a tower defense game... You don't play matches like in starcraft, but you build your base over time (with features like "wait 24 real time hours while this building is being upgraded, or pay $5 to skip it") and you have units to attack other players' bases (in a reverse tower defense style - they don't actively defend themselves, you choose where to deploy units and opponents' buildings try to kill them).
It's all very "mobile-friendly", where you can play in short 5-minute bursts (aka toilet breaks) and everything else is done for you while you're offline, which is why people play it (since it requires basically no effort, just inactive time and/or money). Like other mobile games, it makes most money on "whales", which are people who spend tens of thousands of dollars (seriously) on it, trying to be #1...
Source: I briefly played a Star Wars themed clone of it. It felt nice to stomp enemies with AT-ATs, but ultimately, it was kinda pointless and there was very little satisfaction spread over way too much time.
>No but they’ll shut them down because they don’t want anything to do with game development, like they’ve done with other game development companies after buying their parent company.
This again? Good lord the amount of unwarranted negativity in this sub. I went over this the last time people were running around screaming about the sky falling "because Disney shut down Avengers Alliance, so clearly they're going to shut this down too:"
Disney is both licensing and creating a shit-ton of modern mobile games.
Star Wars: Force Commander was just updated two weeks ago! They're not shutting down a profitable product.

Isn't there already a Clash of Clans ripoff?
Yep, Star Wars has been milked for years now. There's a Star Wars themed Clash of Clans clone, Clash Royale clone, there's Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, which combines multiple mobile genres and was itself such a big moneymaker for EA that it had a spot at E3 last year and was since copied by pretty much every major franchise that has a presence on mobile, there's a mobile Star Wars third-person shooter and yet another Star Wars themed mobile strategy is apparently coming.
Milked to death that one, and mind you, not all of these are from EA either, some are published directly by Disney Interactive or just licenced to a 3rd party publisher (as EA only has exclusive publishing rights on normal Star Wars video games, not mobile games).
These errors are continuing to happen to a lot of people. Contact Disney support and ask for compensation, leave app reviews in iTunes / Google Play / FB Gameroom, contact apple/google/facebook for refunds if you've made any purchases, and tell your squadmates to do the same. These issues won't get fixed quickly unless Disney has the motivation to do so.
I linked the game below. Sorry on mobile, I'll hyperlink when I get to a pc tomorrow.

You could try out the Clash of Clans Star Wars clone for mobile. Here's the link for Android.
