This is the Android version, hopefully this helps.

I just tried it, works fine for me. Loud alarm and screen came on when timer expired. I'm also using 5.1.1. Have you tried a third party timer? I like this one?

Hybrid Stopwatch is what I use. It's great because you can set different timers which is great for me at the gym.

You could label each timer with a kids name. Add time as rewards.
