Hey, I was in the exact same position as you. I was working on an named Streaks which helps you build habits by building a chain of doing work everyday and tracking it.
Then, I found the exact same app with the exact same name on ProductHunt and was depressed about it. I stopped working on it. After some days, I thought screw it. I finished my app and released. Have gotten good downloads and some sales.
The world is too big for just one company!
Hey, I am working on the exact same app. Will be releasing in 2-3 days. Do you want to be added as a tester for it? (Alpha testing it right now)
EDIT: Here is the URL: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pilanites.streaks
so, something for the "don't break the chain" method? I haven't used it, but quick search got me to Streaks, and it looks like something you're looking for.
Streaks - A habit tracker app.
As the name suggests, its a habit tracker app which asks you everyday if you've completed your tasks. 5 tasks are free after which you pay $1.99.
Haven't spent any money yet except for my time so in a sense it's profitable. ^v^

Hey! I've pushed the app into Production. It might take some time to be accessible but try in about half an hour or so. Here is the link to it.
Do provide some feedback!
(Reposting my questions from last time)
Also I've started using this streak tracker to help build the habit. 15 day streak of either workouts or cardio so far \o/. Not wanting to lose that streak should help with motivation :D
Btw maybe you should sticky or pin the checkin threads or make them more visible in some other way, they get buried really easily
I'm using this streak tracker. Basically every time in the evening it puts up a notification asking if I did my skincare, another for exercise, etc. It keeps track of how many days in a row I've done it and my job is to get that number as high as possible.
I still click yes even if I did it kinda half-assedly, the point is that I'm doing it at all and building a long-term habit. Some short term laziness is totally ok :P
I'm on a 23 day streak for skincare and a 17 day streak for exercise right now and not wanting to break those streaks is actually really good at motivating me :D
This system works for me at least. I can't really get myself motivated by setting goals... just doesn't work for longer than a handful of days. No idea if this helps you, but if your brain works similar to mine it might be worth a try :)
Two questions this time:
Also I've started using this streak tracker to help build the habit. 15 day streak of either workouts or cardio so far \o/. Not wanting to lose that streak should help with motivation :D
It's a habit tracker app, where it asks you every day if you completed a "task" you were supposed to with two options, yes or no.
It keeps a track of the your Yes days and increases your Streak by one, you have to maintain your Streak for as long as you can.

I have made Android apps which don't really require any "work" on them except maybe fex bug fixes here and there. (Like this one - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pilanites.streaks)
They bring in about $100-$400 a month. No idea what it depends on. Have gotten lucky to be able to get featured in some big sites like The Next Web and Lifehacker which drove most number of downloads after which reached a good spot in National ranks (for brazil I think) which further boosted the downloads.
Made some more apps for myself and others which sometimes give monthly income a boost.
Being as specific as possible like "Habits of successful golfers" would be more helpful. Ignore the 99% and target 1% so much that they have to buy your book.
P.S. One plug, I made an app for Habit Building. Feel free to use/feature it 😁
We are two people working on it full time. Have reached out to friends for the initial feedback. Got about 250 downloads till now. Now confused what to do.
When I was promoting my previous app, I got lucky by getting featured in lifehacker and then TheNextWeb which propelled me to good search rank and downloads.
I tried getting an India specific app featured, but people are not responding like the way they did.
Yes, I learned programming online before stuff like codecademy existed from Youtube channels like thenewboston. Been releasing apps every now and then. Latest one being a simple habit tracker just crossed $150.
Hey, not sure if this solves the purpose but my app sends you a notification everyday at specific times asking if you've completed the task you wanted to do.
I've made the notifications compatible with Android Wear so it should work there too. Link to the app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pilanites.streaks
No really a small business here but an independent app developer. I made an app for sending daily reminder notifications and I am not really happy with the logo.
How much do you charge?
I don't know if this would be helpful for you but I made an app which motivates you to complete your tasks or risk breaking the chain.

The app is based on Seinfeld's Productivity secret where he suggests people to do what they have to do everyday and mark it on the calendar. After some days, you'll have a chain and your only job will be to not break the chain!
I've been using Streaks (Android) to help me make a few habits that I want. A streak is mentally rewarding, which is why these "check-off" apps work well.
MyFitnessPal has a streak feature for daily logging (today is my Day 1470). I think that feature was a major driver for me. I wanted to get 7 days, then 14, then 30, then 45, then 60, and so on. As you can see, even still I look at it. In a month, I'll be passing 1500 days of food tracked! The weight loss has been a result of that.

For those of you with Android, Streaks is the same concept.
I've released a habit tracking app last week which has ~500 downloads and has gotten some sales as well.
The first thing I did was to answer the question "What is the best way to master a skill?" on Quora. That answer seemed to go a bit viral amassing 966 upvotes as of the time of writing this. That seemed to have gotten me some downloads.
I submitted to ProductHunt and that drove about 200 hits to app and some 60 downloads. ProductHunt now has a dedicated section for games, you might just get lucky over their.
After all this, I've sought to find channels from where I could get some consistent traffic. I posted to an entrepreneurial forum about benefits of habits and how this app could help them. That forum helped a bit too.
In all, what you need to do is to find channels and keep pitching your app there.
You've got an advantage of being a game. You can pitch to a lot of review sites as they seem to review a lot of games. PM me and I'll give you a list of these sites with contact information.
I've also replied to almost any comment I can find on reddit where there is a remote possibility of my app being used. I am hoping that all these things add up and eventually google realizes that the app is popular and should be given higher preference in search. :D
EDIT: Forgot to add this, have a context based option to allow users to share some content with a link/mention to yourself. You'll be amazed how good this shit is. Just try to make the text like the user is showing off and they'll do it all the time.
Shameless plug: I developed an app to track completing tasks daily and build a habit. Here's the URL: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pilanites.streaks
It is literally "Streaks". Here's the link for android - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pilanites.streaks&hl=en\_US&gl=US
They have an Android app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pilanites.streaks
Launched an Android app and have gotten more than 1000 downloads and $30 worth of sale!
Super excited about making it better.
Shameless plug: You could get this functionality by using my app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pilanites.streaks
You should give my app a try. It is a daily reminder app where you can fill in the tasks and be reminded to complete them everyday.
