1.As someone who passed his test only a few years ago, I'd suggest the book/cd method is old hat.
I used an app (specifically this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.focusmm.dts_theory ) and found it much easier.
5 minutes to kill waiting for the bus? Do a few questions. Waiting in a queue? Do a few questions.
Was brilliant, and for a fiver I can't think of a better way to learn.
iOS or Android?
I've not used one for like 5 years so I'm not sure which is the best but I always see them in the top app charts, they're pretty popular. The problem is that they might not show up in your app store if you're outside the UK.

I got the official book, but found this app for Android better for me and ended up buying the full version.
I used this one, every question I got in my test came up on this app, hence why I scored 50 out of 50.
