Just finished Tiny Dangerous Dungeons. It's bite-sized metroidvania game with the aesthetic of a well polished original game boy game that can be beat in a few hours. It's free + ad-based.
The ads are full-screen and are set to pop up rarely when going through doors. All doors are safe areas so there's never a risk of an ad getting you killed, though since it's random and doesn't happen very often you can end up accidently hitting the ad when you meant to press a button instead.
Even still, it's very well put together and definitely worth playing. If the dev wanted to give the option of paying to remove the ads, I'd totally have been willing to toss him a dollar or two.
There's also browser version here.
Checked the screen shots and the visuals are "almost there". Check out Tiny Dangerous Dungeons, that guy did an amazing job :) (will be back for more feedback as soon as I play the game)
The graphics style wouldn't be a make-it-or-break-it factor for me if it is this type of graphics, so it all depends on the gameplay mostly, one of the best android games I've played was a really good and somewhat short gameboy graphics stile called Tiny Dangerous Dungeons that also happened to be free (though it is worth a few bucks), it's a really good metroidvania with not only minimalistick graphics but the gameplay is also simplistic, that didn't stop it from being so good.
In short, I like that type of graphics, but shitty or mediocre gameplay would break it for me in an instant (that or the system telling me that the app is trying to use my phone to make a call/send a message).
Yep! Tiny Dangerous Dungeons https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.adventureislands.tinydd
I just searched 'metroidvania' in the Play store and found this and am having a blast. I saw it was made with Stencyl, never heard of that, so I was looking at the website and now here I am on the subreddit and this is like the second list I read! Hope it inspires you to make more :)

I wouldn't call Sword of Xolan a metroidvania (it is great tough)
Give it a try on this one, it is a short game, but I like it a lot https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.adventureislands.tinydd
This a simple character I'm creating to use on a small, retrostyled metrovania using a game boy palette, it is heavly inspired by this game!
It's along the same line, but a bit harder, a bit longer, and a bit less story driven. My only complaint is that the buttons are a bit too close to the screen, so often times I'd nudge one of the softkeys on my phone.
It also has a sequel: Super Dangerous Dungeon; but I haven't tried it out yet.
Linkme: Tiny Dangerous Dungeon, Super Dangerous Dungeon
[Ninja Edit] Just realized these games are by the same developer as Persist.
Also VVVVVV i think my first playthrough took me like <5 hours.
Wow, that was waaaay off bot. Though, to be fair, I think it's the Play Store's search engine's fault. Here's the correct link.
Not sure if the scope or platform matters but here are few "small" 2d metroidvanias:
Tiny Dangerous Dungeons (web & mobile)
Dungeon of Zolthan (pc)
Alchemist's Castle (pc & ps4) (Disclosure: I developed this one)
Tiny Dangerous Dungeons . Even though it is a mobile game, it looks and feels like a GameBoy game. Dex. Feels much like Deus Ex but still has some ability locked areas and the exploration feels great. Costume Quest. One of the cutest games I ever played. Super Panda Adventure. Played it on the hardest difficulty but couldn't finish, was too hard for my taste. Alchemist's Castle. My favorite (definitely not because I developed it. I am totally unbiased :P).
One of my personal favorite small scaled metroidvanias is the Tiny Dangerous Dungeons. It is available on ios, androd and recently on Steam. It is a small light and pretty well designed metroidvania.
Being inspired by it, I developed a small metroidvania myself, Alchemist's Castle. You can get it on Steam or PS4.
Also, I've played Arkham Origins: Blackgate. Liked it a lot, even though it was pretty buggy, at least on PC.
Tiny Dangerous Dungeon can confirm this.
Tiny Dangerous Dungeons?

Tiny Dangerous Dungeons. One of the best games on the whole Play Store to me: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.adventureislands.tinydd
Not a bird so probably not right, but this is the only monochrome game I know of:

Tiny Dangerous Dungeons is a good little metroidvania game.
