Edit: If I hear about an upcoming show that I want to pay attention to, I search on this app and add it (they list shows even in the development or pilot ordered stage). It will show up down the road in the widget when there's a release date. If it's not yet on this app (maybe a show very early in development), I then may use IMDB's app to get notifications if they have it listed or use Google Alerts to get updates and news as tidbits are released.

you "star" a show, and it builds a little to-do list based on the episodes you haven't watched - anytime an episode comes out, yit automatically adds it to the list, and then you just tick it off when you get round to watching it.
bit of a hassle with long-running shows, cause you need to tick off 5 seasons worth of episodes when you first start using it...but i've found it worth it for keeping me right without having to check every week if my new show is out
I've been using TvShowFavs since forever. If I'm not mistaken it was one of the first TV tracking apps which offered the option to sync to google calendar, that's why I kept using it, even though there could be better alternatives (never used SeriesGuide for example).

I use TV show favs for this. I can list the shows I'm interested in, marked the episodes I've watched, look at the calendar for next episodes.
I know you've already found one, but I have to throw in the app I use called TV Show Favs. I've tried just about all of them but keep coming back to this one.
I am with you, but to make it a little easier I recommend an app called TV Show Favs on android. It can be used to keep track of watched/unwatched episodes of your show, upcoming episodes, or if you have any recent unwatched episodes.

There are plenty of apps but I have been using TV Show Favs since about 2009 or early 2010. There are many others like it but I haven't found one as simple to use after setting it all up as this.
I have the widget on a separate screen to scan up to two months to help keep track off when a season is ending and when a new show/season is premiering.

Tv Show Favs in conjunction with Dashclock.
It puts my favourite TV shows on my Dashclock widget 3 hours before they air. This way I never miss The Real Housewives of Pyongyang.
TV Show Favs. It's an old ass app that I've used since I was on Android since 2009. It's remained largely the same and gets the occasional update. But it has all the shows I watch in its database and the widget for a calendar with the show air times and dates is simple and detailed enough.
Best thing to do is have a show tracking app, like TV Show Favs. It helps a lot and I've been using it for 6 years now.
In addition to that, FOX has been a bit crazy with their Sunday night shows this season. I watch Family Guy, or at least get caught up eventually with it. But some times there's a new FG episode and sometimes there isn't. And it can be up to a month before a new one is released. FG fans had issues with this, especially this season, but it appears Bob's Burgers is going through the same.
I feel it might be the network more than the show writers of their respective shows. I don't watch anything else on FOX so I don't have other shows to go off of to back that up.
I use TV Show Favs for Android. It even has a widget, which I dedicate a screen to view about six air times ahead of all my favorite shows.
Whenever I see a trailer for a show that looks interesting on /r/television, I just search for it on the app and add it's added to the widget calendar on when the season/series premieres and each subsequent episode.
It's worked well for me since 2010 so I have not changed apps since.
I use an app called TV Show Favs, its free, but paying for certain features is well worth it. It had every show you watch, you mark which episodes you've seen and it has a "Recent" tab showing the last two weeks of shows, and an "Upcoming" tab showing the next two weeks. I also like the "Calendar Sync" (paid) option because I can open my Google Calendar and I will have all the shows coming up on the days they air, not to mention in your Google Now Agenda. It's pretty sweet.

Keeps track of the shows you watch (or are binge watching) and lets you know when there is a new episode, or lets you check off what episodes you have watched. For a serial TV watcher it is amazingly handy.

Just get TV Show Favs for your phone. The search feature isn't the greatest because it requires too precise terms, but for following shows you know of it's a great tool to use.
I've been using TV Show Favs for about 5 years now and it has served me well.
It is mobile only, so no desktop counterpart, which was fine for me because I didn't like the layout of Trakt anyway.
