If you insist on using a free VPN service, may I recommend Ultrasurf VPN.
It's still gonna collect data on all the places you visit while connected to it, but at least it has zero ads and only uses a single permission (have full network access).
I had the same issue. The workaround is to use a VPN. I went to my downloader app on my AFTV box. I then typed in this URL: https://apk-dl.com. I then typed ultrasurf and hit the search icon. It came up. I clicked on it. Then another button to download. And 1 more button to download.
