Oh my god, that's Star Control 2! Hands down my favorite game. They made a fan remake of it called Ur Quan Masters
There's even an Android version
Sure, here's the ported app in Google Play -- the author of the port did a pretty good job with the touchscreen controls but they might still be a bit wonky since you control your ship or lander (think Mako) and the game was designed for a keyboard. It's definitely still more than playable though, and worst case a controller or bluetooth keyboard will work great.
The game itself is an absolute classic though, with a pretty compelling story and good sense of humor, while being incredibly immersive for a game created in 1992. Also, more alien races that are really varied and all play a part in the story. The space (rather than ground) orientation aside, there's even some shades of Mass Effect 1 if you can get around the whole age thing, too.
I first played this game on the 3DO (anyone remember that system?). I was blown away by it. I feel like it was ground breaking, especially for the time. But its voice acting is where it really shines. There are so many strange alien species to interact with and the voice acting is done by some serious top notch professionals so it just draws you in. The Orz are particularly memorable, partially because they are so strange and partially because the voice actor, Greg Johnson has lots of experience with this sort of stuff. He also studied biolinguistics so this stuff is right up his alley.
I recommend playing it the first time with no walkthrough or anything. You will lose in the long run, but I think that's the beauty of it. This game had you mining planets and collecting samples of alien life from planets as currency and it felt fun. It felt like you were actually on a grand quest to save humanity. The first time I played mass effect I felt that Star Control 2 had influenced it heavily (not a bad thing at all). And I think many games have built upon what it made.
The game can be played for free on PC (in OPs link) on the Wii from the wiibrew site or the 3DO version if you want to shell out the cash. Give it a try, you will enjoy it.
EDIT- It also looks like it can be played for free on Android devices too, just search under Ur-quan Masters. I have had trouble with the touch screen controls, but a Bluetooth enabled controller would fix that right up. Enjoy!

It's also on Android. Just fyi.
Weird.
I am unable to find either UQM or UQM HD in the google play store, but the links work:

Update: I can only see both when I am logged in to google play. If I'm not logged in, it says:
We're sorry, the requested URL was not found on this server.

Oh, and it's been remastered, and is on android - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sourceforge.sc2&hl=en
