There is a remote desktop cardboard app that works with the gear vr housing. it's a bit awkward only because cardboard apps dont use the touchpad so you have to waive a magnet in front of your face to click things, i suppose a bluetooth mouse and keyboard could fix that easy enough though. It's not so configurable either.
I hope there are devs out there working on a full featured native gear vr virtual desktop!
You could try out my Cardboard VNC app. I haven't had time to keep developing it much unfortunately so it's quite limited.

I've tried it with my 6.8 eink Carta ebook. wifi (for ssh) and bluetooth (keyboard) connection and constant refresh drained 1700mah battery almost instantly, not to mention ghosting effect and a small display size.
I've also though about VR Cardbox and a smartphone, but without the actual VR. Just something you can attach to your head and put your smartphone in there. Nowadays we have FullHD+ on those screens and if it close enough - it's like a regular monitor behind you. VR might work too with something like this - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.chai.cardboardremotedesktop.lite&hl=en but I've never tried it. FullHD in my smartphone is definitely not enough. Anyway, it makes the whole "work outside" idea kinda pointless if you can't see nothing but your screen in the dark cardbox.
I don't know about the mac but on Android there is this VR vnc client: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.chai.cardboardremotedesktop.lite
Once you've set up the vnc server on your Mac you can fill in the macs ip address and the port used for vnc.
Google for how to set up vnc server on Mac OS.
Good luck!
Check out "VR Remote Desktop" on google play store. It works pretty well :).

IDK the difference between the paid and free versions (pro/lite).
You can also use a program like Riftcat to make the PC think it's a SteamVR headset, then use a program on the PC like Bigscreen or Virtual Desktop on Steam.
If you want to see something resembling a big monitor in a VR environment with your PC desktop on it, then what you want is something like this VR VNC client.
Otherwise, what has been suggested elsewhere, but that will make your PC desktop fill your entire VR environment, and if you move your head the entire thing will move with you.
You can use this open-source VR VNC client.
VNC servers exist for the majority of desktop platforms.
cardboard vnc seems like a good choice, unlike Trinus, it's open source
Just tried it out, and I like what you did with the idea. However, /u/Xifar_ did make some valid criticisms; mainly, the problems with the edges (think we should be able to look past them so we can, say, have the start button in the center of our screen) and the ability to zoom out. If you could add a mode that functioned along the lines of Cardboard VNC Viewer, that would be perfect. As an aside, thanks for making Truinus VR in the first place! Definitely one of the most useful things on Cardboard, and I love how much support you give the program.
if you had google cardboard you could strap it to your face and use one of these: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.chai.cardboardremotedesktop.lite&hl=en
There is a cardboard version that recently released: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.chai.cardboardremotedesktop.lite
take a look at this and similar https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.chai.cardboardremotedesktop.lite&hl=en
You can stream your desktop to google cardboard. You could use trinus but it leaves the image fixed.
You could instead use this one or this one. You have to install a VNC server like Real VNC or Tight VNC on your machine.
On cardboard it will appear like a screen floating in front of you. The screen is not in a fixed position so you can look around you. I'm not sure which one, but in one of the apps (maybe both) you can enable the camera of your android device to make the screen appear to float in your room.
There's also a VR VNC viewer on Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.chai.cardboardremotedesktop.lite
Works quite well.
I think this is what you're looking for, but I'm not sure how well it would work with games.
Think this is exactly what you're looking for
