Very common. When I was working in Eagle Farm, the 303 to Doomben was often early. Get this app (if you're on Android) and bookmark your bus routes. It uses the bus' GPS to show its position on the route map. I used it for a couple of years with very few issues. Occasionally the bus wouldn't appear on the map but 99% of the time it's accurate.
Thanks. For Android users, it's here
Of course there'll be problems with traffic lights, etc. I live two stops away from the end of the line, so it's difficult to understand how it could be so wrong: and how a bus could disappear...!
There's a brand new app that I really like. You can sit there and watch your bus travel on a map. It's not the most refined app but I think it has a lot of potential
edit Should note that it's only available for the Brisbane and a bit of the SEQ area at the moment.
Try this has real time tracking. Shows you where the bus is on a map.
It can't predict bus speed though. If the bus is sitting at a blocked intersection, it's gonna show that. It won't make the estimated arrival time any clearer.
Never wonder where the bus is again... Made by a Brisbane Redditor. It shows all inbound and outbound GPS locations on their routes.

I use this tracker that gives you time to each stop or track a specific bus on route.

My app of choice when I caught busses is "Where's that bus". https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.boxdev.wtb
Gives you near-realtime tracking.

Here it is. Looks like they list it as WTB: Brisbane Bus Tracking these days.
