The "best app" depends on your individual needs. There are many apps out there that offer social connectivity, guided sessions, daily reminders, and any number of other features. Others are just simple timers.
I can't speak to the former category, as I don't wish to pay the monthly subscription that most of them charge. However, if you're looking for a simple timer for Android, the best I've found is Zazen Meditation Timer. It's got an easy to use interface (which was updated recently and looks beautiful), and has the most pleasant alarm tones of any meditation timer app that I've found.
If what you are looking for is a simple timer with a range of bell / singing bowl sounds, Zazen Meditation Timer for Android works very well.
Do just want a nice, configurable meditation timer? Zazen Meditation Timer: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.gaffga.android.zazentimer&hl=en
You can use any timer (or NO timer!!) but this one lets you configure bells at intervals and so on for that authentic meditation hall experience. I just use it like a timer (bell at the end) as I like the bell sound. :)
Books, (try the library if you can't afford to buy a book). I use ZaZen Meditation Timer on an ancient Android. Very customizable!
See if you like this one, in case you don't know it already: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.gaffga.android.zazentimer
You can add custom sounds and I found its interface quite adequate for me.
Headspace was remarkably helpful for me -- some of the visualizations carry with me. Did you watch all the videos? Did you practice it daily?
What kind of "progress" are you hoping for? The simplest meditation is where you just sit still and breath, letting the thoughts come and go as they will and returning your attention to your breath. You can accompany it with a visualization of your choosing -- surrounding yourself in a white light and filling your body with a golden light eminating from your heart center for example.
This takes time. The visualizations in the beginning are faint / fleeting, and the focus keeps shifting. Just keep returning to your zafu once or twice daily. Keep breathing.
I also <3 Zazen meditation timer https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.gaffga.android.zazentimer -- you can set your own times and the sound it makes is very soothing. It also does not require any fancy permissions + it is free :)
I've been using Zazen Meditation Timer for a while now. Fully customisable sessions with bells at arbitrary intervals, and once you have some sessions set up it's very simple to just sit down and hit go.
Try Amazon for 'meditation timer'. Or look in the ads of Tricycle, Shambhala Sun etc. An out of date cell phone with ZaZen Meditation Timer installed would work too. I know it worked on the outdated phone I used to have (Android 2.xx I think??).
Nothing, a simple timer suffices for my purposes. I like ZaZen Meditation Timer on the Android. I practice regularly, morning and evening, unless there is a compelling reason to skip it for something else (which there rarely is).
On Android I find ZaZen Meditation Timer to be excellent. It is highly customizable and free.

Highly rated and free...
Zazen Meditation Timer, simple and with gongs: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.gaffga.android.zazentimer
Zazen Meditation Timer. It's Android only and I couldn't find a free alternative for iOS.
