Yes, practice. It's trainable but also needs to be maintained if you don't have the ability to spin naturally. My motion sickness used to be really bad, but my coach told me I was unworkable if I couldn't spin so I actively work on it. I would practice spinning for maybe only two minutes every day and literally go vomit in the bathroom every time.
I ate these before I practiced spinning every session which eased the nausea slightly.
Even now I'm not great at fast spinning and I get nauseous if I don't focus on a single point (usually I look at my hand), but I can get through spinning sequences without throwing up and can spend a full hour working on just my spinning.
If you're nauseous after stepping off the apparatus it also was helpful for me to jump a couple times, turn the opposite direction of the spin, and stare directly at my hand in front of my face for a bit.
Hey I think this is a good idea!
I'm more of a poler than an aerialist, but I think there is some crossover to silks and lyra etc. And also loads of arguments about what everything is called!
I reckon some gifs or videos of getting into/out of moves would be great.
/u/matak89 built a searchable database of exercises that has simple gifs and filters which I really like:
https://airtable.com/shrKZ9lPpw7EvjZ3X/tblvscpkbagqlWKkH
Maybe your app could start off with similar information? Exercise, equipment, video, modifications etc
You could also include a section on ground-based prep work (like core) that doesn't require any aerial equipment.
I'm also a software engineer so can help out with development, and taking videos/photos :)
Everyone’s ears are a little different, and it can be like trying to find a good shoe that fits. That being said, I love my AirPods; they’re the only style of earbuds that actually stay in my ear (tiny ear canals, so even if I can jam anything in there, it’s painful and they fall out within minutes). They don’t lose the connection, ever, and with silicone covers on them to improve the fit even more, I can do whole routines without issue.
Some people like having the style with a wire to connect the earbuds. I did that for a while and it worked to pin them to my hair, but the wire made them more likely fall out anyways since they did put some torque on the bit in my ear.
Edit: these are the silicone covers I use for my AirPods https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07717MMDT/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_glt_fabc_4BH3HHVBYGCSVYEMXJG2
If you're not married to the idea of earbuds specifically, you could maybe try a Bluetooth headband like this? The sound quality wouldn't be as good, of course, but it would mitigate the falling out problem.
I shave mine down after every practice. I've been doing aerial arts for 20 years. Mine are deep, but flat on the surface. Hand Callus Remover, Palm Finger Thumb Callus Shaver Titania with 10 Blades for Removing Hard, Cracked, Dry Skin https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BNLLPDC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_Unw9no3a8Gkht
Soak your hands in warm water for 10 minutes. Dry them and then stretch out your hand palm facing up. Gently let the shaver ride over your calluses applying no pressure. You will have to slowly shave these off to be the most comfortable. Don't attempt to remove them all at once. It should take a week of doing them gently, daily, to get them small enough so they don't catch hard.
You are good to heed the warning your body is giving you. If you go for it, a callus can rip right off.
An additional thing to do is to bring a frozen water bottle and hold on to it in between turns
A unitard can be worn over skimpy clothes. I have worn it over lycra shorts and a sports bra. I wear cotton lycra tank and long sleeve unitards.

You couldn’t of posted this at a better time!! I’ve recently gotten into rope & ive been going through the same struggles. I’m pretty sensitive & every time I’d do rope in normal leggings, tank top, & back warmer I’d still walk away just covered in burns. Right now my go to combo has been a biketard with more form fitting joggers layered over.
Here’s some great light weight cotton joggers: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07JP5STRM/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

I use Cramer firm grip spray it's great for hands and on clothes if you want to make knee-pits or thighs extra grippy.
I typically prefer a chalk/rosin blend and usually buy this one from Mueller. For when I need a little extra stickiness (mostly for fabric), I buy whatever rock rosin is cheapest (I bought a bag that's maybe 2lbs and it's probably going to last me forever). I prefer it in chunks (vs the kind that comes already fully powdered) so I can break it up myself.
I put the rock rosin in an old (clean!) sock and tied a knot in it, and I keep the sock and some loose chalk/rosin blend in a chalk bucket/bag like the ones rock climbers use.
I have a pair that are very similar to these earbuds. I can't find my brand anymore, but they attached around the back of the head and had little find to anchor them in your ear like these do. They stayed in for supper fast spinning, drops on lyra, all sorts of upside down stuff. I remember them falling out once or twice, but it was only on significant drops.
I have a pair of leggings from Old Navy that day they are spandex and polyester but they are soft like cotton. If that's true, I got lucky, because everything else I get with that blend is "slippery". I think they were just brushed to make them soft not shiny, but there was no indication of this in the description when I ordered them. Target sells some leggings over by their regular women's clothes that are a blend, but feel cottony. I have found them to be see through in the bum under stretch though! 😂
I prefer high waisted, I do have a son and stuff has shifted. I found these on Amazon through trial and error, and they are thick, cotton blend and awesome!

Since they're high waist, getting them over my hips was precarious(similar to putting on compression leggings), so if you have a very pear shape, order a size up
I wear a sports bra, a fitted bra cami tucked in, and then a tank. This is a lot for some people, but multiple layers is my thing.
Bloch footless tights were my favorite for performing, soft and almost cottony, nearly opaque, thick and not slippery!
The seller "SweatyRocks" on Amazon has a lot of leggings that are long enough to pull over your heels, or with stirrups (if you like that style). They are fairly inexpensive. This is a pair I have that I like: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y64TPNR/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1&psc=1
I tried it before and while your fabric won't be damaged, it didnt work very well (it was too sticky at first and then most of it came off on the silks I think). I really like those firm grip sprays they sell on amazon
Mad Rock crash mats are primarily for bouldering. Like to be light/portable and protect from falls onto sharp rocks so it's not going to get any softer. My friends have them for climbing. They work well for that, but yeah, too hard for aerial.
I got a mat from "We Sell Mats" on Amazon that's actually pretty decent considering it came from Amazon with free shipping. Quite a bit softer than the Mad Rock mats, but still sturdy.
Every single person who wears a backwarmer at my studio wears that SG-Training one on Amazon. I haven't yet bought it, myself, but it's what I would get!
Thank you. When you like the music and you feel like you are painting a picture of the music with your movements, it's magical. This is the only time I'm not in pain (58 yrs of chronic pain). It's like ecstasy sometimes. I wasn't good enough to be a dancer, or a gymnast, so....

Hi! I have a 20' Lugwig rig on order from vvolfy to use in my backyard, and I've got almost everything I need, but I'm still figuring out the best way to change the rigging. A friend recommended this caving ladder (https://www.amazon.com/Liberty-Mountain-Steel-Caving-Ladder/dp/B001OPGU2W/) and I know pulley systems are another option that I need to research more if I go that route. I'll likely leave the rig outdoors through the rainy winter and spring, so I'm trying to figure out what will stand up best to weather (and additionally, how to know when components need to be changed out for safety). Any advice from others with outdoor setups? What worked best for you, both in terms of ease of use and safety? Thanks!
I've had good luck with these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0045H5V58?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00 under a pair of cotton athletic shorts, though I might think about moving on to working without them, or with something tighter fitting.
For a shirt a tight fitting T shirt has done well enough, though I recently got http://www.target.com/p/c9-champion-men-s-power-core-compression-shirt/-/A-17386157#prodSlot=medium_1_4&term=powercore and am very happy with it.
As others have said, a dance belt is super helpful.
Edit: I am speaking only as someone who has a few months working on silks and no other apparatus as of yet.
Jenn Bruyer's Shapecraft is a softcover, so maybe not as "coffee table" as you'd like, but it's beautiful AND instructional. Venus with Biceps is mostly circus women, and I love flipping through it.
I have taught a few pregnant women and have had pregnant pole instructors teach at my studio, listen to your body and your doctor. I believe in the back of this book has a whole chapter about pregnancy aerial yoga
So leggings are just good practical gear for aerial IMHO. You can wear other things - but for practice they're hard to beat and my debate is usually more what type of leggings rather than leggings/not leggings.
I do tend to wear tighter tops than t-shirts though - something a bit more skin tight that won't get pulled around me weirdly in wraps.
This is my personal favorite shirt: https://www.amazon.com/Am%C3%A9lieBoutik-Keyhole-Blouse-Sleeveless-X-Small/dp/B08WSB7D32?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1
But really, for me personally I like something slightly stretchy & skin-tight. I know some people also like leotards for this but personally I have only ever done that for shows - and I personally am not comfortable in just a sports bra - which is another option I see quite a bit.
Hmm. If your shoulder mobility issues are that significant, the mock-neck options might not be great either, since you'll also have trouble zipping them up (unless you make sure to get a front-zip, which are less common).
Have you tried one of these? https://www.amazon.com/Lotion-Applicator-Massager-Handle-Lotions/dp/B00YE3JVHC/ref=asc_df_B00YE3JVHC
I've used these while working on an aerial silks routine in an open gym situation:

You could keep the speaker pads further from your ear but I had no problem hearing what was going on around me. I suppose it would depend on your apparatus if you might rub your head against it, it would fall off but it stayed put through what I was doing.
I use these, the ear hook means they stay in VERY well.
They have a "Be Aware" mode where they they pass sounds through the speaker, kinda like a hearing aide.

Sock It To Me, Stretch Wide-Calf Knee High Socks https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JC2CFGX/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_K6XPGZTQDKGWR75VZ81A
I like to wear leopard or checked unitard with a rainbow stripped sock. My husband says it looks like a test pattern. My students say it looks like Lisa Frank. The store that sells these on Amazon has lots of patterns and sleeve and neckline options. They are not cotton, but I wear a nude cotton tank unitard underneath instead of underwear and a bra. It makes for a smooth line. I do cube, trapeze, lyra, and Cloudswing. I teach, and perform. I live to dress up, but it's always a unitard and crazy socks from "sock it to me".
Not sure if you’re going for a certain aesthetic for your mirrors, but if you just want something basic and functional Home Depot sells these big wall mirrors that might work for you.
For a silks mat it depends on how high you’re rigging your silks. Typically the advice given is an 8” crash mat, but if your ceiling is fairly low and you’re just going to be conditioning for the most part you can probably get away with something thinner. You might want to look into rock climbing mats like this one, which folds up for storage and is easily transportable.
I use the Aerialist Notebook to keep track of what I worked on in class (what I did well, what I need to practice more), plan choreographies for routines, and make other notes to myself.
I use Jill Franklin's Aerialist notebook in conjunction with video recordings. I primarily use the notebook to jot down important tidbits (e.g. keep legs piked during drop), plan choreography, and compile a list of tricks to work on during open training sessions.
For my equipment, I use this duffle bag (about 20 inches long). It might be slightly big for your purposes but I carry my silks in it and it's perfectly sized (18 yds). I keep extra spansets in the shoe compartment and I use the plastic wet compartment for extra hardware (carabiners, swivels, etc.). Other pockets are good for extra rosin, bar tape, and whatever else.
For you I might suggest something like the bag I use for my training stuff. I got this market/grocery tote (this is a random Poshmark link bc I don't see it for sale anywhere else anymore) from a subscription box a while back and it has a TON of compartments which I use to separate snacks, extra layers/socks/backwarmer, small first aid kit, deodorant, extra masks (dumb covid), etc. etc. I bet you could find something similar by searching for market/grocery totes with pockets.
I use socks in this style, they are really grippy and have enough skin exposed so that your feet fonts burn but you can still grip. They also won’t restate around your foot so that the grippy is on top. The toes are also open so that you can still do toe climbs. This isn’t the exact one that I have but the design is the same
Yep, my rig is full sized and I just personally prefer tabless so it was an easy decision for me. But for sure tabbed is the best way to not have to use a strap. I've also seen spansets wrapped multiple times around the top bar in order to save height but that seems like a pain to me! (Maybe there's an easy way to do it that I'm just not thinking of?)
Here's a link for Cramer's pre wrap! It's like a super thin layer of foam that helps keep the adhesive from getting all gross directly on the bar lol (originally I think it's so the tape doesn't stick too badly to your skin): https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B005927QK6/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_ZX108BXT2HA3W5EDYCPR

Another Redditor suggested them and they are SERIOUSLY high waisted - I bought a pair and I like them a lot!
I just got this bodysuit off of Amazon, and I was impressed with how good it looks in person. They’ve got the snap crotch, so I’d pair with with some dance shorts so they don’t get accidentally unsnapped during the performance. One of the styles with rhinestones would be particularly eye catching. Dancewear solutions has a lot of stuff to choose from as well, nothing specifically spooky though.
These are the only leggings I use now a days. Thick, absolutely not slick, and very high waist.

Place it and leave it for 3-5 days, replace/ repeat. It will heal without scabbing. It will look different than you are used to when you see it while replacing the bandage. While it is healing, your plasma reacts with the bandage and protects the wound so the fibrina do not have to try to span the gap. It heals with minimal scaring. I have a FB page called Circus Bumps and Bruises. We would love you to show this off there
I use a climbing rope bag for my silks and my corde. They have a variety of styles. I prefer the sling bag/backpack style for carrying. But there's also open style that are kinda nice. The reason I like to use climbing rope bags is because they usually have large flaps that lay out so you can take it out without getting it on the ground.

I got a pair of blue tooth earphones with the thingy that goes over the ear to help keep them in cuz earbuds fall out of my ear for just no reason anyway lol. I’ve still had one with a bracket fall out but most of the time they are great :).
These are the ones I have and I’ve been super happy with them. Have had them over a year and use them pretty often.

I carry mine (daisy chained) in a cheap sport duffle bag from Amazon. I purposely bought the one with a shoe compartment on the side and a waterproof section (meant for wet clothes) because I use those extra compartments to carry hardware and other random stuff like spare spansets/loop chains and rosin.
I bought this one first and it worked great but I decided to replace it with this slightly smaller/lighter one. (The first one got repurposed to hold the pulley system and other small parts for my rig.) My fabric is 18yds and fits comfortably so your 16yd fabric should fit no problem.
For this reason I use a unitard Eurotard Adult Tank Unitard 1029 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003O0QWOQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_AGBPHXA5Q8HARKQEHWFN
It takes getting over the initial discomfort of showing your whole body, but I wear 2 at a time so I don't have to wear underwear, and it makes my body look really smooth. I have a bit of a belly, muffin top and dropped butt, but in two unitards I look smooth and long!
Have you ever double looped your span-sets to shorten them? The studio I'm at does this to differentiate heights for our beginner and intermediate levels and it raises the hoop I'd say a good 4-6 inches depending on the give in the span-set.
Other than that this span set from firetoys is just under 2' by 4" and it's what we use at my studio and I have for my personal hoop: https://www.amazon.com/Firetoys-Polyester-Lifting-Strop-Working/dp/B06ZYMN4D6/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=span%2Bset&qid=1609459535&sr=8-1&th=1&psc=1

Im nearly half way through splits in 30 days not bad for a free app but a bit repetitive, maybe that's a given.
I struggle with flexibility a lot so I'm not actually expecting to do it in 30 days, if it's possible for me to learn at all even if it took a few months I would be thrilled! I'm not sure what a realistic goal time is for a non flexible person is.

I’m a little late to the party, but I’ll +1 for the AirPods (the older style, not with the rubber bits that go in the ear canal) as they’re pretty much the only style of ear buds that actually stay in my ears comfortably. I actually add on these silicon covers when I’m practicing, and they’ve never fallen out.
Actually got a lot more use than I expected out of the AirPods during quarantine cause they’re not bad at all for conference calls too.
I performed on an untaped hoop last year (I normally train on a taped hoop - so this was an aesthetic choice and almost a year later I still regret it some days, hah) and I definitely recommend just a bit of spray rosin for your leggings! Depending on what skills you're working, I recommend just a light spray wherever you need a bit more grip (e.g., for outside mermaid, the outside of your leg).
For your hands, I recommend rosin blend (I like the Mueller brand, link here). I have really sweaty hands so this gave me the right amount of anti-sweat and stickiness - I don't like spray rosin directly on the skin, especially for untaped hoop (I use it very rarely for fabric). I mentioned in another reply that I sometimes spray my hands with alcohol and then layer on powdered/rock rosin over it. I usually do this if I need a little extra stick (mostly on fabric, but I could see needing it for untaped hoop too!).
Lastly - no specific exercise suggestions for you, but I injured my shoulder late last year and was just cleared to return by my PT right before COVID hit, so now that studios are reopening, I'm also returning from some significant time away and some weight gain (affectionately known around here as the COVID 19).
I feel really weak most days and every day is a different struggle. My straddle ups are ok one day and awful the next. Be gentle and kind to yourself - it's really hard when you brain knows how to do something and your body is still catching up! You will get there. <3
I love the ones I have! I bought SoundPeats back in 2016 or 2017. I'll admit I haven't used them in the last year or so because of pandemic and some personal issues that kept me from the studio during open play time. The version I have has a strap across the back and little fins to help keep them in your ear. I love them- stayed in while spinning, twisting, turning, upside down, etc. Stayed in for most of my drops on the Lyra. I remember them popping out an ear once or twice, but I had friends whose headphones popped out once or twice every class. I liked the audio quality, but I'm not uber picky about that. I think my new 2019 Alexa device sounds great, for reference. I paid about $19 for mine, and my friends all bought more expensive ones that didn't stay in as well.
My pair is similar to this one: https://www.amazon.com/SoundPEATS-Q12HD-Bluetooth-Headphones-Earphones/dp/B081RW5X5M/ref=sr_1_20?dchild=1&keywords=soundpeats&qid=1596979604&sr=8-20
I was away from it for the three months. I did a lot of biking, planks, different variations of crunches. My teacher then started doing private lessons in her back yard. I thought I was going to be so rusty but I felt like doing those core workouts made me stronger. If you keep working on your core you won’t lose it. Hello! My first set that I bought off of Amazon was I believe this one: DASKING Premium Aerial Yoga Hammock Kit (Light Blue) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B16QILQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_BzJCEb6T9TNX5
Mine are medium stretch though so I’m not quite sure what your preference is.
what you'd need is a Self supporting pull up bar - something like these https://www.gearhungry.com/best-free-standing-pull-up-bars/
You'd need the space to place it in and a couple hundred dollars. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0098MAYNY/?tag=gearbeacon-20
I'd suggest looking for a local place that sells and installs (unless you are handy)
Rock exotica makes a Swivel / Carabiner that might work for you. it's $82, but has an integrated carabiner so you'll save a few bucks (and vertical inches) there.
Fusion make's a cheaper one at $33.
Thank you, Amazon! I wore an extra pair of shorts underneath to ensure they wouldn't be see through in front of the mixed crowd of in laws and coworkers lol. But they worked great.
I believe you can make a recovery. You just have a lot of physical therapy ahead of you to rebuild your strength and coordination. You may also need to rebuild your rotator cuff strength as that may have atrophied during recovery. Since the hands are responsible for many intricate movements, recovery can take a while. I have a technician who shattered her wrist but was able to completely recover with hard work.
There is a great book called Anatomy of Aerial Arts written by a physical therapist/aerialist that details what muscles are involved and how to strengthen them: https://www.amazon.com/Applied-Anatomy-Aerial-Arts-Illustrated/dp/1623172160/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1546816128&sr=8-1&keywords=Anatomy+aerial+arts
In the meantime have you thought about taking up dance and/or flexibility training to improve other aspects of aerial arts. I took up contact juggling while waiting for my meniscus to heal and practicing another circus art has helped fill the void.
A wood Metolius climbing hangboard. It's not really a pullup bar, but it can be used as one, and it looks nice.
https://www.amazon.com/Metolius-Grips-Compact-Training-Board/dp/B001PPOCJE
I had a Gorilla gym pullup bar, which was a good bar, but I wanted a bar that looked nice enough that I could leave it up all the time, which is I why I switched over to the hangboard.
Don't be a dumbass and turn a small injury into a debilitating recurrent issue.
Once it heals, you might want to get a wrist widget and just wear it whenever your wrist starts to get cranky. It doesn't impede ROM at all and it's been really helpful for me.
https://www.amazon.com/CanDo-TheraPutty-Standard-Exercise-Yellow/dp/B001763OS6
My therapist has me training with de blue one and the black one.
Also, you can Google on exercises for climbers, there is a lot more to find there then if you search for aerial hand exercises.
You might like the hand lotion stuff I started using recently. It feels kinda gross on your hands, and you have to put it on during the day, right before aerials is no good, but it really does help. I straight up forgot to use any dry hands at a hammock class after a couple days of it.
You're welcome.
Another exercise I forgot to put up there was scap pulls. Hang off the and try to pull yourself up as high as you can with straight arms (it won't be very high), by squeezing your scapula together. They look like [this].
The book Overcoming Gravity is another fantastic resource as well.
I have long dreadlocks (a little past my hips) and I flip my head upside down and twist it tightly into a bun on top of my head securing it all with an elastic. Actually I use a headband due to the thickness, but if you don't have dreads then a regular hair tie would probably work. It usually holds pretty well.
They wouldn't work in my hair, but my aerial instructor usually puts her hair in a low bun using spin pins like these https://www.amazon.com/Goody-Simple-Styles-Assorted-Colors/dp/B003FVDNO6?th=1
I recently got this one from Amazon. I'm a big fan of it! Plus it adds an extra layer of protection so my hips aren't getting bruised quite as much when I randomly decide to work on rolling through front and back balance on lyra.
I have super sweaty palms, and was causing a lot of trouble for lyra. About 2 months ago, one of my teachers recommended dry hands, and it's basically changed everything.

Super light and built in backpack straps too. Makes it nice.
