I got this one. I’ve never had it on high power mode. I don’t think the CADR is as high as blue air. I like that the prefilter and carbon filter are washable. You can also get a pet filter to stick on the prefilter if you don’t want to wash and prolong the prefilter. https://www.amazon.com/Winix-5500-2-Purifier-PlasmaWave-Reducing/dp/B01D8DAYII
I read you should never wash your HEPA filters! The purifier should tell you when to change it. But if you washed it, you need a new one because it will be damaged. The fibers will deform and will not pass air as efficiently. I think this is your filter. https://www.amazon.in/Philips-FY2422-10-Protect-Replacement/dp/B01LYX4CXA/. Hope it helps!
You can't go wrong with a Coway 400. It's a powerful unit that is quiet with reasonable filter costs and lifespan. Expect to clean the prefilters once a week to once a month (easy to do and free) and replace the HEPA filters about once a year.

Yeah they just have different product lines for different countries. If you go on Amazon Japan they have an airmega 600 as their top model, and for substantially less $$ than the 400 here in the US. Japan uses 100v outlets or I'd have ordered one for fun, don't think it would be too happy running on 120
Right now?
Probably the Winnix 5500-2 bundle, $205 at posting https://www.amazon.com/Purifier-PlasmaWave-Reducing-Washable-Replacement/dp/B0756Q383V
The Mounto 650 CFM is an interesting option to get more airflow, $299 at time of posting. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B09HR6CGLQ
HATHASPACE Smart Air Purifier 2.0... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V56QH7T?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Had this for 2 months in my apartment. My girlfriend and I smoke everyday, and the smell never lingers for more than 1 hour with this thing. Even has a real time AQ index
I hate fragrances too. My coway seems to work in the house, but I generally don't use scented products. Since you are in an apartment, you might also try a door sweep for the front door, and these insulators for your outlets - I think they make them for switch plates too.
To your first question,
No, it will not be too big.
The only time an air purifier is "too big" for a space is when it physically or visually becomes bothersome.
A larger unit is superior in every technical sense Than a smaller one, and are generally even more energy efficient (at equal CADR settings)
The unit is OK, I just got one a week ago. It's not bad, but I'm not terribly impressed, either.
The filters are flimsy, and not true HEPA, and the carbon fill is pathetic, and the whole unit is on the flimsy side. Mine has uneven legs. It's going back to Amazon.
A much better option, IMO, is the CoWay Airmega, at that price point: https://www.amazon.com/Coway-AP-1512HH-Mighty-Purifier-White/dp/B00BTKAPUU/
A better option than either, for most purposes, would be one of these 20x20x5 filters taped to a Lasko 20" Box fan, for a total outlay of 130 bucks or so.
Inexpensive option would be to take one of these and tape it to a common 20" box fan like this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aw7fUMhNov8
Total cost will be about 120 bucks, will far outperform almost any air filter on the market, especially at removing smoke.
Would this cannister work with the fan you posted?

I'm guessing since they are the same brand it would be best. Are these the only two things I need? I don't see anywhere that shows the lbs of carbon or is this something I buy separately?
I wanted to hear your thoughts as I live in about a 600-650sqft studio + den apartment. However, I move quite often (I've moved about once a year since 2016). So lugging around something like the IQAir seems rather impractical to me.
I was primarily looking at something like the Coway Airmega 300S as I'm trying not to splurge too much here, so 300-400 USD is my "soft" budget, otherwise I might have gone for the 400S.
I was looking around the thread and saw you recommended the Alen. Out of the two, which would you recommend? I may be open to splurging a bit more on another recommendation if there truly is that large of a difference -- but given that I don't currently live in a rather large space (may change in the future depending on which city I move to), what are your thoughts? And is there another option that I might have over looked?
>ut that doesn't change the fact that the Blueair generally score much higher CADR numbers than hepas in the same price class
Why do you keep saying that?
Show a blue air unit what gives 390CADR for less than 130Euro like this good Winix purifier!
Good idea. You can spend lots of money on really high quality sensors/meters but i think for the average consumers something like the Airthings would be sufficient. But feel free to do your own research as well.
I don't think something that small would do anything. I would suggest an Austin Air Healthmate for the inside of your unit, if you can afford to spend that much. There are also carbon filter/fan setups that weed growers use.
Also, I would suggest a door-draft stopper like this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PQHCRL2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
It won't completely block the smell from coming in, but it will help greatly.
You are right about the carbon filters saturating quickly, even on something as good as the IQAir (I personally own one and have posted on here about it).
The Terrabloom setup would be your best bet for robust carbon filtration. However it may not be necessary depending on your current VOC levels.
My recommendation would be to get an air quality monitor (i use an Air Things ) and let it gather data for atleast a month or so and see what your average VOC levels are. If they end up high try frequent ventilation (opening windows) to see if that helps. If you still aren't satisfied and want some serious carbon filtration i would look into a Terrabloom setup.
As far as extending the life of the carbon filters other users have mentioned occasionally running them outside to "recharge" them. I have not tried this but there are articles out there about it as well.
The cheapest easiest (but not pretty) option is to get a big ole carbon filter kit like this or this. I've used both, still have the latter.
These are not particulates, if anything they may slightly add particulates to your air due to the carbon dust. And being cheap you may smell the carbon a bit. But they work for filtering VOCs and should take care of most of the furniture's lacquer/varnish stank.
I’d go with 100$ ones that use a square filter. Something like this. LEVOIT Air Purifiers for Home Large Room, H13 True HEPA Filter Cleaner with Washable Filter for Allergies and Pets, Smokers, Mold, Pollen, Dust, Quiet Odor Eliminators for Bedroom, Vital 100, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X25BNBR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_N6MBJRKRABWAY6BXZ2KX then once your filter inevitably become too dirty, I like to vacuum off the front of the filter once a month, get some custom replacement filters in bulk for the year. I like filterbuy.com. Just measure your old filter and boom instead of $20+ for a new filter it’s more like $6-7 instead.
A Winix could be a good option .It has an ionizer but it lets you leave it off. They are very highly rated and come up on alot of top reviews.
I don't think you should restrict your options to only ones that blow air out the side/front, thats gonna limit your options for no reason. Just use a fan at night.
If you're on a budget and looking for something highly rated that does HEPA filtration I would recommend the Winix 5500-2. It constantly at the top of every Air Purifier review.
If you're worried about ozone then just don't turn on the "PlasmaWave" feature. I am concerned about ozone as well and have a Medify MA112. It has a similar ionizer feature that would technically create ozone, but it lets you turn it off which i do.
I’ve been extensively researching this subject as well. I have a multi generational home so I want the air to be as pure as possible without ozone.
I bought these for our bedrooms on sale:
Limited-time deal: LEVOIT Air Purifiers for Home Large Room, Smart WiFi Alexa Control, H13 True HEPA Filter for Allergies, Pets, Somke, Dust, Pollen, Ozone Free, 24dB Quiet Cleaner for Bedroom, Core 200S, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08FJ678YK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_dl_EDG6AE3TW4TG9M6G6BYX
I’m debating the Leviot 600S for our open space layout downstairs:
LEVOIT Air Purifiers for Home Large Room, Covers up to 1588 Sq. Ft, Smart WiFi and PM2.5 Monitor, H13 True HEPA Filter Removes 99.97% of Particles, Pet Allergies, Smoke, Dust, Auto Mode, Alexa Control https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09BJMY8HL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_ERPVNZ9W55FYV4VDRJW5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I am asthmatic and swear by these. Bought 2. Run them 24/7. 2 years straight and going strong. https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Purifier-Cleaner-Allergies-Personal/dp/B07YB77XLC/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=2UFT6LUV7IXQM&keywords=renpho+air+purifier&qid=1645237063&sprefix=renpho+a%2Caps%2C93&sr=8-4&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.18630bbb-fc...
The Winix 5500-2 is probably your best bet. Its been top of most Air Purifier lists for years and has a great reputation. You aren't gonna get much better than that under $200.
I got this one some weeks ago: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B086KWL8XS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's not a well known brand, but the purifier works really well! It has a air quality sensor, humidity and temperature checker too, it has an auto mode and many other features.
I was sceptical at first because it is not a well known brand, I got it for around £80 on a deal price, it's £99 right now.
It has wheels on the bottom for easily moving it around and I really like it, I had a Levoit 200s before but I returned it because it doesn't have a air quality sensor meaning I had no idea what the quality of the air was and if the purifier was even working.
Purifiers are pretty much just a fan and filter(s) so going for the well known brand, I don't see it as any different than getting the one I recommended.
Their smaller air purifier (same brand, IAM) has more reviews so you can see that people like this brand, https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B085Q9YNY4/ref=emc_b_5_t
Good Luck!

If you're looking for a cheap alternative you can try an Airmon. This is what I'm currently using in my home. I cant speak for accuracy as I don't have anything to actively compare it against but it seems to work well.
I have had a Xiaomi air purifier for 3 years and I am very satisfied with it. The noise is inaudible at lowest setting and barely audible in night mode, but I leave it in auto during the night. Filters are cheap. Choose the Hepa filters for 52$ when replacing the filter for highest efficiency.
Hmm good hepa and carbon filtration for smoke in a quiet unit good enough for 800 sqft under $300 is a big ask. That rules of most of my usual recommendations. However the Alen might be a good fit. Its $300 in the base configuration, but I think you should pay the extra $70 and get the "heavy smoke" setup and that gives 2lbs of carbon!
I only have recently got into air purifiers; but the cheapest "legit" air purifier that has smart functionality and has a dedicated filter for toxins is the Levoit 300s. You can set schedules when to turn it on and the level/strength to turn it on. It provides PM25 measurements only, not VOC.
It does 2 air changes per 40 m2 square room. Since you have a (3x3 meters); that's almost 4 air changers per hour which is good.
I used it personally but have upgraded to Levoit 400s and another product named Mila Air Purifier.
Make sure to skip/DO NOT BUY air purifiers that mention OZONE, UV-C, or Ionizer. No bueno for the baby or any one.
Hopefully others people can chime in as well.
I have the Levoit 400s and it won't definitely pick up those unless the PM spikes up due to those odors. You can change the auto settings to a certain PM level. Mine turns up to a setting 4 once PM spikes higher than 30.
I'm looking at getting an air purifier that is called a Mila Air Purifier since they're transparent about the amount of carbon they provide in their filters. Not only that, they have special filters design for certain situations similar to yours.
If you want pure carbon, this is what I have in the bathroom. The tenant below my apartment smokes 24/7 in the bathroom only, and this clears it out in less than 10 minutes. I have it set up with a smart plug to turn it on whenever I want. It isn't aesthetically pleasing so there is that to consider.
In that price range I would probably go with the Winix which is $160 on Amazon . It comes highly recommended by many reviewers, users here and even Wirecutrer like the other user mentioned.
I like the Winix enough based on everything I've read that I'll probably buy one for my basement. Solid hepa and carbon filtration for the price.
So how would you go about analyzing the efficacy of a Coway Airmega?
I don't see a CFM rating or rating for the HEPA filter yet it says it has 1560 sq ft coverage which is huge
I contacted levoit support and this is the answer
" Hi Cristian,
We are hoping to release the Core 300S by the end of this month.
You can pre-order on Amazon now if you are interested.
We hope this helps! "
Hello, based on your comment I was interest in getting a dylos, when I went on Amazon I found a review video. You seem very knowledgeable and I was wondering what you would think of the video review. Please let me know! (Video is comparing the dylos to another meter)scroll down until you see the video review
If I'm not mistaken, the charcoal has to be replaced in a year. Buy which ever you find the cheapest. I was able to find $20 packs on amazon. also 5500 has pellets which last longer than the mesh ones on 5300
Coway is available in Canada?
Here is Amazon Canada link. Here is Bed Bath and Beyond Canada link.
You need a combination of a carbon filter + duct fan to effectively scrub vocs in a room of your size. Go for 6” or better 8” duct fan + a carbon filter 8”x24” size of so. Ideally to come up with correct size you need to know the volume of your room in cubic feet and then have that volume of air go through the filter every 2-3 minutes. Activated Carbon works very well for VOCs, it absorbs anything that goes through it, but as with any filters eventually the medium inside the filter will get saturated and the filter will have to be replaced. The fan is needed to pull the air through the bed of carbon inside the filter and either exhaust it outside through the window or just constantly recirculate air in the room through the filter. You can expect around 12 months out of the filter depending how often you will be using it in such application.
Hydroponics grow companies offer the products that you need, as the same setups are often used to scrub odors in pot growing application. Check out a product like this on amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08VQFHNQR?ref=myi_title_dp
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08VQLTJRM?ref=myi_title_dp
These set ups will be a lot more effective than any air purifiers for home applications, as they can scrub a lot more air per unit of time and are way more effective than residential use devices when dealing with VOCs. The downside is that at full speed they are quite loud but if you get a fan which comes with a good speed controller in set you can fine tune the speed according to your need and noise requirement.
Thank you! We went with 5 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WP9MZ5J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_04PCFYQX6YK7C4Z8JM6C?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
130 bucks each. 70 after the 60 dollar coupon. There is also a promotion to add an extra free filter. I figure it should be a decent starting place. If it's insufficient, I will have to try something else.
Thanks again.
Just to clarify, these are the filters I use in the unit. I have this and then the screen that keeps it in place.
Filtrete 16x25x1, AC Furnace Air Filter, MPR 1200, Allergen Defense Odor Reduction, 4-Pack (exact dimensions 15.69 x 24.69 x 0.81) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006EI5V88/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fab_oMZHFbKT03975
I see twitter suggest the Air Mega is better. However, they are out of stock on AMZ. https://www.amazon.com/AIRMEGA-Smarter-Enabled-Purifier-Compatible/dp/B01C9RIARQ/ref=pd_lpo_201_t_1/130-8355386-7830800?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01C9RIARQ&pd_rd_r=dd32a8ed-e6c5-4426-9317-9b4dda2edf11&pd_rd_w=YqfIM&pd_rd_wg=lPWtO&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=4VM7Z6KYWC7JJ8Z3M9B1&psc=1&refRID=4VM7Z6KYWC7JJ8Z3M9B1

Is the air mega worth waiting for?
I'd suggest either the SilentNight (can get 2 of these for 75) or the EcoAir Pure 126 on Amazon. The Eco Air is almost 100GBP but it looks quite legit.
You're right about the chinese models, many come off very dodgy
Go for Winex. Great prices and equal/better than TruAir.

My TruAir units were quite loud and didn't do that much for a 350 sq. ft. room. I also like the versatility of the Winex filters: I vacuum the outer filter, wash the inner, and then pay for the Hepa once a year.
