I would recommend La Tertulia

It's a lot more inviting than most coffee shops in Amsterdam, doesn't feel like a dank basement, very friendly service(seems to be run by several generations of the same family, no idea if this is true never asked), has a patio on a canal, doesn't blare house or D&B, is not inundated with loud youths and has a number of board games to play. It's where I generally take my mum and dad when they visit. Also the pot and hash are quality.

If you want to save a euro or two over buying a ticket at the counter on the day, you could buy a ticket in the NS app. (Android link, but I'd be shocked if there's not an iPhone app too if that's what you have.) This has always accepted whatever card I've used in it, and it gives you a QR code in the app that you can scan at the gates.

As far as the language goes, try using flashcard tools like the Beginner Dutch app and the StartFromZero_Dutch app to learn simple Dutch words and phrases daily at your own pace and convenience.
