I've managed two successful higher-end barber shops and just opened my own shop last week.
It's not so much about the haircut. People can get a half decent haircut all over the place. It's about the service. Offer a higher level of service than what is the norm. Finish every cut with a straight razor neck shave and a hot towel. Emphasize straight razor shaves and price them the same as a haircut. Towel warmers are cheap. Customers are willing to pay a premium for a good haircut and great service.
Social media can be tricky. I'd be leery of using discounts or coupons. It attracts bargain hunters just looking for a deal, not necessarily people looking to patronize your shop in the long run. Newspaper ads are a waste of money. A huge thing is getting your shop's google listing up to date (https://www.google.com/business/). The more pictures you have and the more information you have, the higher your shop will show up on searches. Also the same applies to your shop's Yelp listing. Add your shop to Yelp or claim your listing if it already shows up. Add pictures and fill in as much information as possible. This will make your listing show up higher.
For paid advertising, google ad words is a good place to start. I just tried this for the first time last week. It will show your ad based on key words you choose. For example, if someone searches "philadelphia barber shop", my ad might show. The good thing is that you only have to pay when someone clicks on your ad. Facebook has a similar ad structure where you choose a daily budget and they show your ad to as many people as they can with your budget.
Liners: T-Outliner or Slimline Pro Li. Nothing else is even worth a look.
Adjustable: Wahl 5-Star Seniors (or Sterling -- same motor). Andis Masters. For cordless, the Wahl Magic Clip/Sterling.
Detachable blade: Oster 76 or Oster Model 10. For cordless, Andis Supra or Andis BRG
Shears: For just starting out, Equinox shears on Amazon. $15 and they're great. For much later, there are too many to name. All preference. Have to go somewhere and feel them out.
Straight blade: Same as shears. Any $10 cutthroat with decent reviews will suffice. All depends on if you like the snap lock blade holder (much better, IMO) than the slide in type. I like a natural handle (black or wood), but I've used this one for years (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0118BJ0PA?psc=1) and it's really good. The handle loosens over time, however, and gets annoying. But for $12, you can't really complain.
Good luck and have fun. I never touched a pair of clippers until September of last year. I'm not done with school and making excellent money. Don't let any distractors get in your way. Just focus and do work.
They won't fit for 2 reasons:
If you can afford to buy the individual blades, do it. The smoothness of the cut is incredible. If you're going to buy the Oster guards, get the spring loaded guards. (part # 76926-900) Here's a link on Amazon to show you: https://www.amazon.com/Oster-Professional-Specially-Designed-Clippers/dp/B001T0HHB0/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1492383199&sr=8-1&keywords=oster+76+guards
I like to use a razor holder with disposable blades, brand isn't as important as blade reveal and durability. I recommend small reveal for more control and if the razor has an adjustment for handle tension it helps to tune it to your tastes. Good options ate the one from easyblade...
Check this out at Amazon EZ-BLADE Straight Razor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MUXO2XB/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_glt_i_WD27W8X78WY4N6DCEXYR
Or a more basic model
Check this out at Amazon 100 BLADES + Facón Professional Vintage Straight Edge Barber Razor - Salon Quality Cut Throat Shavette https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GJWL5PK/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_glt_i_Q7VYSRZJ3SNNVRKB631V?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Bear in mind the facing one will have the black paint chip off, but does have the tension screw. It is a good option to see if you like the razor holder for cheaper... definitely get better blades to put in it though as the ones it comes with are pretty thin and dull easily.
I was in the exact same situation as you, and I chose to use the oster fast feed. It works great the only problem is the stock blades and guards are not that good. If you want to be able to improve and need an all around bulk remover/ blender for a moderate price this is perfect.
Honestly since you're in school I would recommend getting a cheap set. My school set came with shitty shitty terrible shears as well, so I ordered a set from Equinox on amazon for $30 and they're fine. If you screw them up you're not out a lot of money. If someone walks off with them you don't have to worry about it. If another person in the school forgets his shears and grabs yours you don't have to worry about it.
Hattori Hanzo shears are great, but they're professional shears, not student shears.
There are too many ways to achieve the same results to list. I prefer to use as few tools as possible to reduce what I have to clean up between clients and at the end of the day. Try a thinner flat top like this one. The teeth of the comb are flatter and the width of the comb is the same as the with as the clipper blades without any hanging over the comb.
The clients happiness leaving your chair is what matters most. My critique was hard found. I think it’s an excellent cut.
Edit: a few words
Andis pro slimline cordless t-blade trimmer, 1 Count, Silver https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01499YQP2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_GbjMBb0V8YT8W
This one? Yeah it looks sick but a little more expensive. Do you think it’s worth paying extra for this over the other two?
hmmm, how much do people normally spend for an average sharp pair of scissors. Also do people resharpen their scissors or do they dispose them? Im looking at this pair on amazon right now, around 40 CAD
What do u think?
These are the best towels I’ve found in 8+ years of barbering. I’ve bought hundreds, they hold up great. I’ve only used white, but they come in a bunch of colors including black.
Ohh...trims closer to skin ...you mean trimming for shorter beard like a stubble?...and If one doesnt zero the gap then those smaller hairs will not be captured in the machine resulting in uneven trim..., Right..?
Secondly, I have just placed an order using this link... https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Professional-5-Star-Magic-Clip/dp/B000ZMAL2U It mentions in the product title 'zero gap blades'....does it mean it is already zero-gapped or I still need to do it...?
Regards...
I use these

I didn't want to but, these seem to be the most readily available... but be forewarned... You'll likely need to lightly-ish sand down the cam follower to get your cutting blade seated correctly.
If you don’t care about name brand, this is the one. It’s the same as the new gamma hairdryers but half the cost and works amazingly. The barber next to me has the name brand version and there’s no difference.

Have you considered balding clippers instead of wet shaving?
hmm can't find that exact but found the Andis EasyClip with detachable blade, which is marketed for dogs, but that has a rotary motor, not a brushless (at least the ones I'm seeing).
How about Phillips One Blade:
My son uses these with good success. alternatively Whal Magic Clip our Super Taper again.
If you're talking about blades like this they have some sort of coating on them to help it stay sharper(?). Some of my coworkers have them and I have used them in a pinch but they seem the same to me as any other detachable blade, and I still prefer my ceramic ones.
I'm not sure the exact length of each one off the top of my head but toe the 1A seems more like a 1.25.
For a straight, grab the Feather artist club straight with their blades. It's the best blade I've found in my 12 year obsession with the best blade. Get the Kamisori style razor and their Super blades:https://www.amazon.com/Feather-Japanese-Straight-Razor-Black/dp/B0060QYUP4/ref=sr_1_3?crid=33981K3HX6S6&keywords=feather+artist+club&qid=1655326474&sprefix=feather+artist+club%2Caps%2C164&sr=8-3
The blades are crazy sharp, yet amazingly durable and SMOOTH.
For a safety razor, skip the Derbys. Astras are meh, but the are highly variable one to another. Generally poor quality control.
Feather are super sharp and go from slice up the client's face on the first use to uselessly dull in in the 3-4 use. And they cost too much for the short life.
Personna Labs aren't the sharpest, but they are smooth and durable. In some more aggressive razors they work VERY well.
The best all around blade I've found is the Wizamet. It's essentially the old Polsilver Super Iridium.
The best value blade I've found is the purple pack Gilette Nacet. They are super shart, very smooth, almost as durable as the Polsilver, and cost only 12c each. I bought 500 just in case the Russia stuff cuts off supply.
I'm using the Nacets all the time now. They're only slightly less smooth than the Polsilver/Wizamets but cost a good bit less.
Here are the combs that fit. I don't have that image anymore but when you look at the underside of each comb, you will see 5 short tiny plastic tabs that support the comb against the blade. You just need to snip about .5mm off of each tab and it will solve the hair grabbing problem.
https://www.amazon.com/Andis-4-Snap-Combs-Attachment-Set/dp/B002CP4UAC/
typically, depending on how bad and where the acne is, barbers won’t do shaves on people with acne because there’s a high chance they’ll bleed, and it’ll spread the bacteria from any pustules. I personally would not perform a shave on someone with acne for these reasons.
if you really want to feel clean shaven, try a foil razor. they’re an electric razor, where the blades are underneath a strip of curved metal with small holes in it. basically, you press it down, and the hairs go into the holes and get ground down, but the razors edge never touches your skin. this means it won’t cut or irritate your skin. it might do a light exfoliation if you’re rough with it, but that’s it. the hair does need to be pretty short (stubble length) in order to actually go into the holes. but this gets it super smooth, like there’s no hair at all. you can also take it against the grain of hair and it shouldn’t irritate your skin. I use mine on lots of clients, for skin fades, necks that I dont want to or can’t shave. this is the one I recommend to my clients.

This is the one I'm currently using but a larger palm-sized brush would be great too. Not good for styling as the bristles are really soft but it cleans up hair that's stuck to the skin so I can see my fade.
My hairdresser has these stick-on visors I always ask for as I can’t tolerate it on my skin either. A game changer.
There are such things as taper guards. They are usually included with cheap clippers, especially from Walmart. The result is nowhere near as good as doing it the old school way. I still think the video is fake bc of the angle the barber uses the clippers is almost perpendicular instead of the guard being flushed against the head. The results doesn't match the barber's technique.
You absolutely can use guards on detachable clippers.
In order to use the guards you need a 000 blade to attach them to.
You can buy clear rubber mats that are made to go on top of carpet.

I like the babyliss pro Trimmer
I haven't needed to Zero Gap it. Opened the box oiled the trimmer and used it made line ups so much crispier than any Andis or Wahl i have tried.
I find that if you lay the hair down with some Mane Tame and a Durag then line it up the line comes out crispier.
Enhancements also work but honestly not everyone like those and it can start to become more pricey.
Hope that helps, this of course is my opinion so best of luck with your son.
Conair is trash. If you are looking for budget and good reviews, look at these on Amazon, currently on sale for $35, cordless, and plenty of accessories. My buddy got them and loves them for the price, and we have been in the biz over 10 years and have tried all kinds of pro clippers. Give ‘em a shot:

If you can save up a couple more bucks I would get this:
Limural Hair Clippers for Men Professional - Cordless Barber Clippers for Hair Cutting & Grooming, Rechargeable Beard Trimmer with Large LED Display & Silver Metal Casing https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087JBN4MT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_FBQMYVKQED056QR57KAH
I know a barber who has one and he’s used them quite a bit without any problems, even though it’s really cheap for a cordless clipper.
But if you’ve only got $24.99 then I say pick those clippers up and just get started cutting. Take good care of them and learn how to clean & oil them properly (lots of really good videos on YouTube about this) and they’ll last you long enough to be good enough at cutting hair that people will eventually want to start tipping you and then you can start saving for better clippers.
But I don’t suggest you charge people — cut as many heads for free as you can so you can get EXPERIENCE. When you’re old enough to get licensed you’ll go straight from school to a great shop or into a great apprenticeship if you have that in your area. But that’s just my advice. 🤷♂️

ended up using 3 month payment thing and got myself some absolute hitters and then got these foils:https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07MW4PMH8/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_title\_o01\_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I used the super tapers when I was in college. Worked absoloutely fine for me 👍🏻 moved onto the magic clip and senior 3-4 months later. I got the Wahl cordless detailer and andis foils. Neither are budget wise though. Search up on Amazon for both items.

But honestly if your still in college. I wouldn’t worry about the foils to much - use your detailers^ to take it shorter then the super taper can make it

He liked them but said the trimmer started not working in less than a year

My shop uses a hot towel for every customer, so we go through about 40+ a day. Every morning we fill up the sink with hot water, add a few drops of tea tree oil and add the towels to the water. Roll up the towels, ring out most of the water and then pop them in the towel warmer. They take about 30 min to get hot and then we just leave them in all day.

What about the Wahl Balding Clipper?
Yessir, I bought two knock off clippers from amazon for $30 a piece. I only bought these for class because I keep my nicer tools at the shop but honestly I recommend them. Both of the ones I bought come with their own guards but can use all wahl guards as well.
I prefer this clipper over the other one I bought. It cuts pretty clean just heats up kinda fast. The last cut I posted on here I actually cut with this clipper. However, they raised the price since I bought it. That’s some shit, wouldn’t recommend it for the new price tag:
This clipper is basically a magic clip. It does the job and lasts me about two cuts before needing a charge. Mine doesn’t really get too hot but my buddies heats up pretty quickly so maybe I just got lucky or he got unlucky. I’d recommend this one for sure, especially for the price tag.

Hey everyone! Hope someone could lend me their advice. I've been starting to cut my own hair at home using Wahl Model 79467 from Amazon.
It was working very well, that is until I took it apart to clean. First thing I noticed after removing both screws and that the blade flew off very forcefully, as if it was loaded with some mega spring. In the album linked, you can see all the parts from the top.
Putting them all back together, I'm stuck with this gap on the top and I can't for the life of me keep it down. No matter how hard I screw back the bottom, it keeps gapping at the top. I can force it down with my hand, but it won't stay.
The culprit seems the be the motor guard/lock keeper (whatever the black part is) in place, as it doesn't lock in anywhere. I notice on other clippers inner screws to keep it in place, but there's no screw holes in the clipper to keep it in, nor a locking mechanism.
Hope I can get some help! Thanks if you've read this far.
This is what I use. I have five pairs of shears because I'm an insane person but you can easily put everything you need for a quick scissor cut. This plus my clipper bag is all I take with me when I go to my parent's house to do their hair. Keeps me super organized.
This is what I've been using for almost a year. I like it so far, got the purple one as a gift.
I will say when I first got it, the snaps to hold scissors were a bit hard to close. Over time, they've stretched out, so it's easier to secure my shears.
I use 5.5 and 6" shears, if it matters. Not sure how it would accommodate things outside that size range.
Save just a bit more and go with this one you won’t regret it. If not then maybe get on Facebook marketplace or OfferUp and grab one. Anything else will be upwards of $250

it fits on any tripod and it’s bright as hell!
My tips for you is if your having trouble trap your blend between two guards and blend down with the half guard from your one guard but make sure you get the most out of your one guard i would close it half way then all the way then blend the rest out with my half and then take out the bottom that’s left which is just ur blade open to close or close to open.
Sorry, I meant the cordless one. Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately I still can't seem to find any but will keep looking.

Sorry I should rephrase, Masters are just known to heat up more than other clippers, but any metal body clipper will get hot if you're using it for 30+ mins.
I shouldn't have said the Masters aren't good that's my bad.
Idk what your budget is but take a look at these sets and see, I think for home cutting one of the best sets is this Wahl combo - powerful clipper + a great trimmer + a full set of guards.
An alternative would be cordless clippers like this Andis Envy Li some people like not being tied to a cord at home.
Surker K7S - Wireless $50 clipper it’s awesome especially for beginners
Thanks, I never heard of it. Although thats not saying much. I'm like a caveman when it comes to looking good. My girl wants me to keep my hair long, she thinks I just need to figure out what I'm doing and how to take care it.

It all depends on your own necessities. I’ve never used mobile lighting equipment though this would definitely help out to get better lighting, up obviously. I try to be a minimalist as much as possible. Went cordless on all my clippers except for an oster 76, and I keep all my tools in a sweet case I bought from amazon:

There’s the link for the Wahl Colour Coded Plastic Comb Attachments for Standard Multi Cut Clippers https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007UT032Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ix.EEbC4F54PB
I honestly can’t find the other links because it was over a year ago but any scissor set of amazon will do don’t spend big on a pair of scissors when you’re starting Out!
But I found a combination set that should help you it’s Wahl super taper with a trimmer Wahl Professional Trimmer Combi Pack https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000IJ6V24/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RD.EEb3RFZC5Y
I hope this helps and wish you all the best in the trade!
I've been cutting hair, including my own, for almost 25 years. I have 4 sons and I fade/trim them up every few weeks. I've saved thousands of dollars and have invested in some nice equipment over the years having started with a Wahl box set from Walmart back in the 90s.
I buy most of my stuff on amazon and can personally recommend this set of Equinox Shears that I got in 2011. I've purchased other expensive shears since but this set was by far way worth their weight in gold.
That’s the one! I did change the cutting blade and the still blade with a wahl blade and a ceramic cutting blade ceramic cutting blade
Also, if you want to go a step up from the Magic Stars, the Wahl Senior is great.
Damn that’s some cradle robbing shit going on there!! No wonder so many girls are reincarnated with daddy issues. Anyways.
Weighted mid fade. Tools were without motors. Hand driven clippers so blending from clippers to shears was shoddy, that’s why heavy weight lines were probably popular. these clippers were most likely used, manual hand clippers.
You can still obtain that look. Google shorem haircuts and you’ll be pleasantly surprised :) then take those photos to your nearest hipster barbershop and pray you get a legit barber that doesn’t just shop the look.
I use a parmesan cheese shaker. It looks nice on the counter and easy to put on your duster.
Appreciate it. Here's where I bought mine from.

You can buy a straight edge "shavette" on Amazon for like 15 bucks with 100 disposable blades.
I have one. Its nothing special, but it will shave your face. Good for a beginner.
Haven’t read it yet. Gonna check it out.
Wahl sterling mag cordless. I’m telling you I’ve seen these things blow up. I got them about 2 years ago and there were like 20 reviews. Now there are hundreds and barbers upon barbers can’t say enough good things about them.
-Quiet (good for kids) -Not too sharp but extreme clean line (my wahl detailers weren’t even zero gapped but were cutting people) -Cordless but charge lasts for days 2-3 (10+ heads a day) -Feels good in hand. -Don’t get hot
I am not a fan of andis t outliners at all. Never understood the hype besides they are reliable. They get very hot extremely fast and there are better trimmers with cleaner lines imo.
Wahl detailers are my second fave. Very sharp blade so not really good for kids.
Andis black cordless trimmers just their basic ones. I forget the name. I had them and they held a good charge. We all used these thru barber school. Never got hot. Not a T blade though. Charge lasted about 2 days (10 cuts a day or so). These are good kids trimmers.
But I’m telling you, get your paws on these. I tossed the rest of my trimmers and am buying a backup.

What insoles are you using? I started using SuperFeet (https://www.amazon.com/Superfeet-GREEN-Full-Length-Insole/dp/B002T0072U?th=1&psc=1) last year after battling plantar fasciitis for a bit (I'm flat-footed), and these worked WONDERS. My pain is 100% gone. My back feels a bit better too.
On top of that, use Oofos (https://www.amazon.com/OOFOS-OOAHH-Unisex-Sandal-MASSAGER/dp/B0155I7GT4/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1511798338&sr=1-2-spons&nodeID=7141123011&psd=1&keywords=oofos&psc=1) around your house. They're ugly as sin, but incredibly comfortable and provide support. Combine the two, barely walk around without arch support, and you'll be in good shape.
Sorry for the link gore.
hey bro I'm just looking this up now, so the Wahl detailers you are referring to is an additional clipper? ( is this what you're referring to? ---> https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Professional-Detailer-8081-Instructions/dp/B000H7O5M0 )
I wouldn't be able to do line ups with the Wahl magic clips?
let me know bro
MAGIC Monsieur Charles Razor, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000PD79GA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_DQ2hAb5GKGY9P ------- This has been my favorite, works great with feather razors for full face shaves, and with cheap half blades for the back of the neck. Although I had to buy a second one with how loose the pivot point got. Even has a handy set screw for the slide. Really like it for the money and awesome weight to the "blade".
Sorry, didn't see the link. This one is made of nylon as far as I can tell, though it mentions boar for some reason. I'd ask a question on Amazon before buying.
$16 and I've used them in my shop for long stretches when my shears were getting sharpened. Great for the infrequent use you'll give them. When they're dull, toss them and get another pair.

You can find this attachment on the US site as well but the .ca has a specific question about the fast feed clippers.
However I second the above question, what on earth would you need that large of a guard for?
This Andis .1mm blade can fit on a detachable.
I've heard great things about these my coworker had them and he loved them.
I use the T edgers. They're a great hearty little trimmer. I had issues with zero gapping. They became too sharp, but that could be because I'm still learning to to make them 100% perfect.
>Do you want to be able to be bald, like smooth as a baby's butt bald?
I don't care for the baby butt bald as it seems to require more maintenance. I like it as short as possible without being baby butt smooth, many people think I shave my head with a razor when they look at it.
Right now I shave my head once every 3 days. Freshly shaven it is like velcro and pulling my shirt off over my head can be a chore as the shirt will stick to tiny hairs on my head.
I went to a barber not to long ago and asked for my head to be shaved and a beard trim. He used some clippers(not foil clippers and not really big clippers either) and buzzed my hair right off(no guard) to the perfect length with no irritation. Now that I think about it, it seemed like he used some kind of detail clippers but no t edge blades were on it.
Could it be that my technique is bad and the irritation is operator error? or should these clippers(https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H7O5M0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) be able to cut my head bald but not irritate?
Sorry for all the questions and thank you for your help.
that's a good start. you need an edger/detailer. I use this. I've found that Wahl, Oster, and Andis clippers all have their strengths in terms of the hair's texture, density and whether or not the hair is curly or straight. So I use all three.
