It’s not really that difficult . Any business can claim their business listing on google maps by verifying their address. Then they can manage that listing and keep others from altering it. It’s called google my business https://www.google.com/business/
When you say you were on Google before do you mean someone added you or you added yourself through Google My Business?

My recommendation:
Get a website. Even if it's one of those Wix things. Get SOMETHING online to establish your presence, explain who you are, and detail what you do. There is a lot more info to this, obviously, but way too much for a reddit comment.
Hook your website up to Google. This will help Google know how you should be shown in searches, both general web searches and Google Maps searches.
Become a ProAdvisor. If you don't work with QuickBooks, this is optional, but I got a lot of my bookkeeping clients through the Find-A-ProAdvisor site.
Network. Networking gets a bad rap as salesy and schmoozy, but if done correctly it is absolutely worth the time. Your Chamber of Commerce can be a start to get your feet wet, but I've never gotten any substantial business from it. You could also try your local BNI, but whether or not that works for you will depend heavily on your personality and work ethic. I personally have a group in my area which is a much more laid back organization which meets for coffee a few times a month and has happy hour once in a while. If you can find something like that, it's a great way to rub shoulders with business owners in your community. Again, there's a LOT more to networking than I could write about here.
Move. This sounds like it may not be an option for you right now, or even in the immediate future, but I moved from a small unmarked office above my father-in-law's chiropractic office to an actual office building and got two new clients just from them greeting me as I was moving in and asking what industry I was in. Visibility can be extremely profitable.

Protip: If you set up a Google My Business account it can help with your Google paid search and maybe with your organic Google search (not sure on that one since it's a black box). Since Google tries to find relevant information for searchers, if you type "restaurants open now" it will use that information to help match the searcher to the information.
You can also use this information to create Ad Extensions on Google paid search, which provide more info to consumers, help you get more real estate, and generally help you page rank go up (again, since it helps Google match relevant content to users). All this means your marketing dollars go further!
The photo is associated with the business in Google's database. I'm not entirely sure which Google service is responsible for this - I think it's Google Places.
Basically, they signed up for it and it will show up whenever someone using KitKat calls them or gets a call from a number registered to that business on Google Places. It's got nothing to do with whether you've added them on Google+ or anything like that.
If you really just want basic visibility, use something free like wix.com or weebly. Wordpress if you want to publish more content, but it's a little more complicated to have something nice looking.

This happens a lot more than you think. Scammers normally use an address of a property for sale. The scammers do it for several reasons.
They see a victim that demands proof as a nuisance and this is their petty revenge.
The know that if a victim has traveled several hours, they will be more susceptible to paying last minute fees (sunk cost fallacy).
They have nothing to lose by convincing a victim to travel for several hours with their family.
Google maps is used by several in car navigation providers. We recommend asking the (potential) victims for information about the scam.

Yeah, that's not true. Google My Business is a free service that lets you manage how your business appears on Google search results and in Google Maps. They do ask you to prove your physical address with photos of the building and some other information, but again, it's free.
Now, you can definitely pay for Google Ads if you want, to get ranked higher when people search for keywords matching your business, but that is a separate service.
I've helped setup Google My Business listings for a few small businesses and I also just recently had to declare a business "permanently closed" after my company bought an office that belonged to an audiologist for 30 years. I recommend any storefront dispensary take the time to setup and manage a My Business account. Makes it much easier to find you via Google and Maps searches.
I work as an SEO on an enterprise level for large companies and also my own business for local presence (all my leads are from organic search (seo)).
A lot of people here seem to have okay advice, but this really boils down to basic local SEO strategies. It'll be easier to appear in the local pack than competing with aggregate sites such as Angie's list, home adviser, etc. who almost always take top spots in normal results.

It's quick, easy and free. And then if you have the budget & ready to go, Adwords Express makes it easy for pay-per-click / sponsored ads.
Then setup Yelp/Yahoo/Bing profiles. The more (even free) links from sites like business directories and social media, to your website the better. Then setup a Youtube page. Make a couple videos.

I've managed two successful higher-end barber shops and just opened my own shop last week.
It's not so much about the haircut. People can get a half decent haircut all over the place. It's about the service. Offer a higher level of service than what is the norm. Finish every cut with a straight razor neck shave and a hot towel. Emphasize straight razor shaves and price them the same as a haircut. Towel warmers are cheap. Customers are willing to pay a premium for a good haircut and great service.
Social media can be tricky. I'd be leery of using discounts or coupons. It attracts bargain hunters just looking for a deal, not necessarily people looking to patronize your shop in the long run. Newspaper ads are a waste of money. A huge thing is getting your shop's google listing up to date (https://www.google.com/business/). The more pictures you have and the more information you have, the higher your shop will show up on searches. Also the same applies to your shop's Yelp listing. Add your shop to Yelp or claim your listing if it already shows up. Add pictures and fill in as much information as possible. This will make your listing show up higher.
For paid advertising, google ad words is a good place to start. I just tried this for the first time last week. It will show your ad based on key words you choose. For example, if someone searches "philadelphia barber shop", my ad might show. The good thing is that you only have to pay when someone clicks on your ad. Facebook has a similar ad structure where you choose a daily budget and they show your ad to as many people as they can with your budget.

As someone who has been looking for cabins down in western Wisconsin, I can't recommend enough doing Pay-Per-Click (PPC) through Google. There is no one bidding, and you could probably bid a penny per click. Are you familiar with Google Adwords? Boulder Junction looks to have some PPC ads from VRBO as you mentioned, but Google may favor your ads more since it's specific to the location and not a run-of-the-mill aggregator.
Also, throw your information into the Google My Business https://www.google.com/business. It's free. Your contact information, website url, and description and map pinpoint will show up on a Google search.

I believe the strongest channels are local listings sites. This is what prospective students use first when trying to find a BJJ school.
There are 2 main ones - Google Maps listing and Yelp. Google maps is the big one, while Yelp is also strong mostly in the U.S and some other countries.
For Google, make sure to add your academy on My Business and update all the relevant details. Title and description are important for getting good search results - make sure to have "BJJ" and "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" appear there.
Similarly for Yelp, you should claim your business page, so you could manage business details and reviews.
The next step would be to get some favorable reviews from your existing students. Make to continuously monitor and handle bad reviews and try to keep your average rating high (especially on Yelp, where businesses show up by rating).
The next step is converting prospective visitors through your website or phone calls. Make sure someone is always on top of those, as many places neglect having good response on all channels.

Is foot traffic to your stores down, or just conversion rates? Are sales down across the board or only for particular models or classes of product? That'll help define where the problem is.
Mattress buying is such an infrequent thing that I'm not sure an pre-sale email list is going to solve much of your problems. I mean, it won't hurt. But I don't think it'll necessarily be a silver bullet. A post-sale email list, however, would be pretty good for selling add-on accessories and services.
Consolidate the websites into one, absolutely.
When researching SEO, focus your energy on technical on-page optimization (making sure your tags are set properly, that the site loads quickly, that you have schema tags, that your phone number and address are listed identically on everywhere, etc.) and that you are listed in online directories properly. Moz Local is a good service for the latter. Local SEO is the key. Make sure your Google for Business profile is filled out completely, and that the phone number and address match everywhere else. Barring a large amount of local competition, this should get you in the "local pack" for searchers a few miles from your stores.
AdWords could be good for you. But don't underestimate local direct mail. Or even a teenager in a costume on the sidewalk in front of the store waving at cars.
Great tips about communities. For me, communities are what got me started using G+ more heavily. I'm better able to track topics/trends, I use them way more than LinkedIn groups, and I've been introduced to a bunch of people active on G+!
If you could describe in 2-3 (or more) words what it is that your business does, what would those words be?
Then go to Google - Places for Business and make an entry for your company WITH THOSE 2 OR THREE (OR MORE) WORDS IN THE TITLE. You would have to use the address of your home/garage (or a PO Box I guess) as your business address when doing this. You do need a US mailing address.
So if the name of your company is "LeafJerky", then the Google Places for Business entry should be "LeafJerky - Computer Repair" or -whatever words describe your business.
I run two businesses. One of them is taking care of dogs in my home because I work from home for the other business. So the Google Places for Business listing for my company is XXX - Overnight Dog Boarding and Doggie Daycare.
So when someone does a local area google search for the service I provide - my company immediately shows up on the local google map. Search for "dog boarding" there I am. Search for "doggie daycare" - there I am.
You get great local Google map results by including the services you provide in the "name" of your company on Google Places for Business. And I am imagining that folks who want computer repair are looking locally, so this would fit your niche.

STUDY your competitors' reviews. Learn what they are doing right - and then offer that info to your customers via your website and social media. Also, learn what they are doing wrong, and correct this if you are doing it, but also, highlight in a professional/positive way that you don't do this.

Use social media to connect with your people every day. You can offer general wellness tips that people can try on their own, with the idea that someday they will come to you for better treatment. Make sure they get to know your personality and see your expertise.

You'll mostly see it on businesses that aren't really taking the reins in regards to their online footprint, but it can also be indicative of businesses that either a. no longer exist b. never existed in the first place or c. already have a claimed listing, but someone mistakenly added a duplicate.
If someone claims the business, Google will send a postcard to that address with a code on it. The business would then go to the URL on the postcard and input the code to confirm they are running the business at that location. A random person would not be able to claim the business as their own unless they staked out the business' mailbox and pilfered the Google postcard when it arrived.
When you confirm your listing you're actually creating a Google My Business account. This allows you to customize your listing and to interact with customers in various ways. It extends well beyond Google Maps. There's even a whole other subreddit for it.
If you just want to be able to direct your clients to your site, Weebly gives you pretty websites without much of a learning curve.
If you want people to be able to find you by searching something like "therapy Your City", go with WordPress.
Weebly has absolutely horrible SEO. I'm currently remaking a clients site that was originally done with Weebly by a friend of hers. Even when I directly search her business name and city, she doesn't come up on search results. That's unacceptable, yet she's been paying monthly for the privilege of not being found.
WordPress has a slightly higher learning curve, but once it's set up you can add blog posts easily. People will find you and you don't have to pay a monthly ransom to keep your site live.
A few other notes: -go to Google My Business and list yourself there. -as much as I hate saying it, make a page on Facebook as well. You can just post links to your blog posts and thoughts, inspiration, etc. -learn how to be comfortable asking clients for recommendations, testimonials, etc. You can share the testimonials on your website and make images with them to post on Facebook and add to your Google listing as business photos

I would also create a Facebook company page and add your address there as well to help with local rankings.
After each job you can ask the client if they know someone else who could benefit from your service. Then contact that person letting them know how you were referred.
You can also ask clients if they enjoyed your service to please leave you a review. Reviews can be left on both Google My Business and Facebook pages. Good reviews will not only increase your local search rankings but will also increase your conversion rate.

I'm a huge believer that Trust and Relevance are by far the most important ranking signals—and weighted accordingly!
Therefore, I think the first thing any business should do—if they want to be ranked for their name—is submit their info to Google My Business and then get verified (they will mail you a card).
Also go to Google Maps and submit your location.

I'm not sure how many customers you're going to have, but most CRMs are probably overkill when you're just starting out. I've found that they're more work than helpful until you're dealing with many customers.
Development skills: To truly take advantage of local seo tools, you're going to have to be able to get under the hood of your website. If you're going to work with a professional web developer to build your site, make sure they set up Google Analytics, Google Webmaster Tools, follow structured data markup (ie schema.org) and facebook open graph.
If you want to tackle low hanging fruit without dealing with the code stuff, make sure you have a business page set up with all the major social media channels. Granted, it's Google so you know they're going to track the shit out of your website/user base, but I imagine integrations with Google (e.g. when customers try to find you on Google) should go pretty smoothly and I was blown away at how easy it is.
