I still play with Special Actions for a few reasons:
In general I think it's an extra fiddly bit that changes the game's strategy in a bad way. It might be fixable with house rules, but then you're not really playing the official version. (BGG thread)
I have a travel set that I carry around that is working well for me. It's very barebones but it successfully supplies my battlecon fix on the road.
Storage: This fancy box. All the cards in one box, bases in the tiny middle compartment, and the standups and tokens in the larger one.
Board: Trials of Indines comes with a more compact board consisting of 7 cards placed side by side. It works perfectly for this.
Dials: I use Keepscore because the dials won't fit!
Characters: I use Hikaru, Cadenza, Shekhtur, Eligor, Cesar, Alexian, Kallistar, and Mikhail. I think these characters are extremely straightforward, with gimmicks that are just subtle riffs off the main system (still working on this mix, any suggestions are most welcome). This is because I wanted to be able to quickly teach someone in case of a new player.
