For fun, here's a bit of a route to bypass that jerk, from Shevlin: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36201792
Bring a navigation device and no guarantee this is the best route - you probably want to do some exploring. But once you get over to 'Triangle Hill Road' you are good and can continue north.
Lots of ways to deal with that:
It's probably not actually 95 when you go to work. Tomorrow it's supposed to be a very pleasant 68F at 9 in the morning: https://www.wunderground.com/hourly/us/or/bend/date/2021-07-16
For me it wasn't that I couldn't find a place, it was that when I did I was #25 in line. So yeah, hope this helps! This sounds crazy, but I'm sure you're at the point to try anything so here's what I did to get #1 in line for our current place.
Go to https://visualping.io/ and set up website crawlers on every property management site you can find - do this for their "vacancies" pages. It will notify you if the website has been updated and you can set it to check however often you want. I set this up on like 15 PM company sites and had it check every hour during business hours and within two weeks I got a place. It'll cost some money, but spending the $25 was worth getting a place to live
You can absolutely use your own equipment. I pay for 1GB and use my own modem without issue. Here is the one I use. You just need to call support and give them your MAC address(found on the sticker on the bottom) so they can activate it.
ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit Cable Modem, Approved for Cox, Xfinity, Spectrum & others , White , Max Internet Speed Plan 2000 Mbps https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DY16W2Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_RC6Y3WMB48A4Q3DYCQ77?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
If you want to avoid CL and are fine to drive a bit near Sisters, Upper Three Creek Sno-Park has great snowshoeing trails, a warming hut, and good views: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/oregon/upper-three-creek-sno-park-to-jefferson-view-shelter
Check http://communitycrimemap.com/?address=Bend,%20OR (filter for All Events, add Date Ranges, heatmaps, etc.)We have excellent detectives and recordkeeping in town. it tends to be the same tweakers, transients or kids.
pS:get a camera, Dashcam or a couple Wyze/Nest/Etc, protect yo shit. Ask around your neighbors or down the street for cam footage. I think https://nextdoor.com/ is also very active in some neighborhoods
Just so she knows, all of the roads have some winding parts but the 97-197 leg is not woods at all, all open prairie with room to follow the road into say a canyon and also see what's coming ahead and behind, which is not like 26. And 197 has no big truck traffic but 26 does so it can get scary bc those guys can haul butt.
Also check the weather forecast as I think it will be raining along 84 into Portland. Maupin looks partly cloudy but warmer so no road freezing at night along that 197 part. https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/or/maupin/45.17,-121.08
You might find this interesting, although it might be a joke. Someone posted that they were the kid with the loud car:
looking to be a VERY snowy weekend on the passes. Best place to see weather at elevation will be places like Government Camp https://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:97028.1.99999 or Detroit Lake https://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:97342.1.99999 for example.
The longer route through The Dalles/197 is an option if you want less snow.
South Sister and Broken Top are both late august hikes. I did the entire Black Butte hike this past Saturday and it was perfect conditions. The lower trail is really beautiful, and I only encountered a handful of people on it as opposed to the upper half which had dozens of folks. Epic views from the summit.

If you do do it, keep an eye out for little white and brown telephone insulators nailed to the side of trees along the path. They were put up 80 years ago for the lookout tower.

Your router makes a huge difference in what the service provider gives you, and what you actually have at your computer or TV.
Rule of thumb requirements:
Standard definition (SD) 3Mbps
High definition (HD) 5-8Mbsp
4K/Ultra HD (UHD) 25Mbps
If you can connect an ethernet cable from your router to your streaming (TV or device), you will get faster speeds. I routinely check my wireless and wired speeds using these links:
And I replaced my old slow router with a Nighhawk R8000.
We had a short break mid-to-late afternoon, and the blob has descended upon us once again. This is a good visualization that also does PM2.5 forecasting (drag the slider at the bottom left): https://www.windy.com/-PM2-5-pm2p5?cams,pm2p5,43.897,-120.202,7
Green Lakes is one of the busiest hiking trails in Oregon, but for good reason. Parking will be an issue if you don't get there early. Also, the nameless lake on the eastern shoulder of Broken Top is a great destination.
Many cams, including Wyze always work offline using the microSD storing days of footage locally w/timelaspses or only motion detected, etc if you prefer to not be 'online' wifi. Or you can setup to only send notifications text alerts and not stream or send videos/large files.
Other style cams sync up to a local network only, CCTV either a wired DVR or local storage that can be done cheap to an old PC or laptop as a 'file server'.
You can ALSO just use any old Android/Iphone AS a security camera, lots of Free apps out there https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.code.bluegeny.myhomeview&hl=en_US , again can be kept offline on internal microSD in a window or eve.
Lastly, Trail Cams are also good durable Buys, https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Sports-Outdoors-Hunting-Trail-Cameras/zgbs/sporting-goods/3413551 will run for months on battery or plug, and only higher end models have cloud (or cellular) or wifi capability.
If you don't mind coming over the hill ryan cook has a lot of unique slabs if you give him a call he will send you pic of what he has and he has been one of the better prices guys I have found
I hope this helps it took me many try's and slot if money I tell I found the right guy
Most of those are pretty well over for the season or tapering toward it.
That said, There's a Tuesday night hammer ride, a tuesday night Rubber Mallet ride for those as aren't so fit, and Saturday rides - check the Bend cycling google group. https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/bendcycling
Japan's population is declining, Tokyo's isn't though, because that's where everyone who's young and ambitious goes.
And no, Bend is not going to turn into Tokyo, either. A bit more 3/4 story mixed use development would be wonderful, add a lot of housing, not increase sprawl, and contribute a fair bit of property tax revenue without requiring much new infrastructure.
Perhaps Bend's sister city Belluno is worth a look:

Hi. Lucky Lake is a beautiful and crystal clear and clean lake to swim in. It’s only about a 1.2 mile hike to get to it from the trailhead. So about 2.5 miles total round trip.
Since it’s such a short hike and you are rewarded with a clean and beautiful lake, it is pretty popular. So probably expect some people.
But I think you’ll enjoy the short hike and I know you’ll love the swimming. Hope you try it!
Check out this trail on AllTrails. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/oregon/lucky-lake-trail
Thanks everyone for the advice! I was also confused- trying to construct a trail from some very hazy phone directions.
I found a route that summits South Sister, then heads to Green Lake, then an out + back to summit Broken Top, then loops around (counter-clockwise) from Green Lake to Tam Rim to Three Creek Lake. About 25 miles, a little over 9,000 ft elevation gain.
We got this modem/router combo to replace some old equipment and it's BLAZING fast and was $119. We called BBB with its info and had it set up in under 10 minutes. It's nice just having one piece of equipment, too.

This is the one I got from Amazon. It works great. Before my best buddy passed 2 weeks ago, I could walk both my dogs hands free with this thing. Still get a whiff of poo once in a while, but it’s not too bad, and there’s no poo bounce-age off the arms.
I’d gladly teach you. I teach my two kids that have been playing daily for the past 6 years. I also play flute and teach oboe. Music is tons of fun to playing and extremely satisfying to learn.
I’d recommend getting alfred’s beginning piano for adults book.
That’s what I would recommend. Frankly it’s just easier and more accessible. Big game hunting is a major, practically year round commitment. You’ll need to not only understand the animals, but also hunting units, controlled hunt applications and scouting before you even start. Then if you manage to harvest an animal you’ll have to know how to field dress, skin and process it. It’s a ton of work. Back country big game hunting is my passion, but I started with birds as a kid.
They’re also not mutually exclusive, you could cut your teeth on small game while preparing for a big game hunt. It’s also easier to find guides or mentors for small game and the skills you pick up will help you if you decide to take the plunge into big game hunting.
There’s a book written about a girl in Bend who decided to pick up hunting that I gave to my wife while we were dating to help her learn about what hunting is takes, it’s called Call of the Mild:
https://www.amazon.com/Call-Mild-Learning-Hunt-Dinner/dp/1455500747
For me, a single childless guy who doesn't qualify for subsidies, it's significantly cheaper to buy short-term plans through the year and pay the IRS their fee in April. For me, roughly half the price got me a better plan than the cheapest I could find during open enrollment.
Also, it's worth noting, if you decide not to pay the IRS fine, it is not collected if you don't have a refund coming.
A recent book just explored this very topic. Long story short, young women are crushing men right now and it’s a very real issue.
Blow out companies are used to different connections. That one looks like a threaded 3/4" cap. They'll connect directly to the pipe next to the backflow preventer.
You can get one of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08HSYQMWC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and do it yourself if you have a compressor. As long as the system isn't too big or your compressor isn't too small it will work. Takes a bit longer but it works. I have an acre of irrigation and a 135psi 20 gallon compressor, took about an hour cycling through 5 zones with 6 larger head each.
Amazon, next day shipping lol
This shows that wind speed topped out at a whopping 14mph that day:
https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/us/or/bend/KRDM/date/2020-8-15
I recall it being pretty windy but not crazy windy. We’ve had 50 mph gusts at our house in the last year.
> DON'T FORGET THE WHISTLE.
I PUT ONE OF THOSE PACK BUCKLES WITH A WHISTLE ON MY DRY BAG FOR JUST THIS REASON. HAD TO DEMONSTRATE IT FOR THE WATER COP BUT IT WORKED JUST FINE.
Just send me your info via this form and we will get one to you - if you wait a few weeks it’ll even be the “Give A Schmidt” version!
sounds like you want a 6" stovepipe thimble
You can order it from Home Depot [and it will probably be cheaper to a consumer]

I WILL SAY THE EXCEPTION IS FLOATING THROUGH OLD MILL - IT'S BASICALLY A FRAT PARTY ON THE WATER SO I EXPECT TO HEAR AWFUL MUSIC. I BOUGHT THIS LAST YEAR AND IT'S AWESOME.
I had birds pecking at my gutters and making holes in my siding. Bought this little contraption and it’s worked like a charm.

I buy if off Amazon. I like the brand NOW (although I use others) and have been taking Quercetin with Bromelain for several years. I just looked it up and wow, the price has doubled since I bought it. I know a lot of people take it for Covid prevention (it helps with respiration) which is perhaps why it's so much more expensive. Here's the link.
No affiliation or sponsorship to this company, but I will say that I bought this air purifier a year ago and it has performed like a champ and is stupid quiet. Two neighbors bought them as well and they are also pleased with them.

https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/or/bend - pick your station here, usually local radio or tv stations. Also it does list exactly where it is pulling its report from, but like you said, NOAA is likely the closest source of truth for forecasting.
There are a lot of places if you take a drive out to some FS or BLM land where you can do some fun things and roam around a bit. I rode my bike up Pine Mountain a week ago, and there was no one out there.
The real problem is going to be the crappy weather tomorrow, it seems: https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/or/bend

Only about 2 miles on a gravel road to get to the trailhead. Hike is 5.3 miles but you don't have to do the entire hike. You're at about 8,000 ft. with a 360 degree view. Highly recommended.
> I want to make the full disclosure that we moved here last year
haha. Recent transplant gentri-splains why all us locals shouldn't worry about being displaced by tech bros and retirees because "it's happening everywhere."
Obviously, home prices are increasing every where...however, mountain towns are in a uniquely shitty situation where local wages are low and the cost of living is high. There's even a book about it.. The average public school teacher makes $58,406 in Bend...the median home price is creeping up to $700k, with the 97703 area code surpassing $900k.
What an absolutely tone deaf post. Luckily, the serfs are leaving the manor and you'll no longer have servants to pour your favorite microbrews or make your farm fresh salad from jacksons corner.
Conditions change rapidly/dynamically. You may be better on HWY58 rather than McKenzie river pass.
In addition to TripCheck, https://www.tripcheck.com/ I recommend you peek the Weather forcast for places like McKenzie Bridge https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/or/mckenzie-bridge-state, Sweet Home, Hoodoo Resort, Sisters, places along the route at elevation.
Indoor gyms have metal frames with wood panels and then textured. Most home walls are just wood framing and hardwood. We have one in our garage.
The only thing I can think of that might suit your needs would be, decided what type of board you want, look for plans online or get a book building home walls (there’s one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Building-Your-Own-Climbing-Wall/dp/0762780231), then just hire a carpenter. It’s really not that hard to build a well built one, you don’t need a fancy company, just someone competent. Who will build it and get you the materials.
You could also Ask r/climbing if they know anyone locally.
Bedmart is hiring a professional sales associate in Central Oregon! Commissioned sales experience preferred, but will train. Apply through indeed.com if you're interested!
I keep hoping so. Here's a good site that gives the smoke forecast - https://www.windy.com/-PM2-5-pm2p5?cams,pm2p5,43.897,-120.202,7
Things change from hour to hour but this smoke cannot last forever. I'm hoping that we'll see some rain later this week and things will improve.
If it weren't for the smoke this would be about the best time to be here - still nice weather and most of the tourist have gone back home.
Good luck!
I’ve hiked Broken Top twice, leaving from Green Lakes trailhead both times. It’s 4 miles to Green Lakes, then another ~2 to the top. About 100 feet from the top there’s a 5.1 climb; some people use ropes, some don’t.
Here’s the AllTrails link: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/oregon/broken-top-summit?p=-1
Read this book and everything will begin to make more sense, at least it did for me. First, almost all "homemess" aren't just people without a home, they all have severe mental problems and drug addictions. Rather than forcing them into rehab, people want to give them a free place to live. Well, now you have a drug addict staying in a nice home which won't solve the actual problem. Housing affordability is also an issue, but that's been created by government overregulation. There's no land to build homes on (Due to Oregon's self-imposed Urban Growth Boundaries), there are no incentives for everyday people like you and me to build rentals because Oregon's rental laws are so draconian, why would I want to be a landlord if I can't ever kick out even the worst tenants who trash the place and don't pay rent. Finally, locals shut down new apartments and subdivisions whenever they can. But that book explains a lot about what is going on with West Coast cities very well and what we can do to fix it. It'll require tough love which most people are not comfortable with doing, unfortunately.
Sullivan's books are basically required reading. He does have a much newer version out for Central Oregon for a few dollars more: https://www.amazon.com/100-Hikes-Travel-Guide-Cascades/dp/1939312175/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=100+hikes+central+oregon&qid=1633468341&s=books&sr=1-1

I forgot about those! Good idea. Here's one on Amazon. I'm sure someone sells it locally, but I couldn't find it on Google.
Hey u/lazed_confugal , at the prices I see these days, you are better off using a MySoil kit.

I'm not sure about the majority of Bend, but I'm not even running on coax cable anymore like some of the users here seem to be. We switched over to fiber around March and had a fiber line run to the home and had an ONT(Optical network terminal) set up. From the ONT, it's just an ethernet that goes to your router.
They told us that we could not use our own router. I spoke with the installer for over an hour about this, explaining that I do understand how this works and that is complete BS. He would tell me all kinds of reasons for why we could not use our own, and that he spent 4 hours one time trying to get my exact router working with their system.
They set up their router and told us we'd have to pay for it monthly. After they left, I spoofed their MAC address on my router and it works fine. The wifi tv boxes connect just fine as well.
So, with that said, whether you are on coax or running an ONT, you should be able to use your own hardware and I would just keep arguing with them until they let you do it with your own hardware. This was just how my experience went.
As for recommendations, I'm assuming most customers are on cable still, so the Arris SB8200 another user suggested in this thread is a great option. If you're on an ONT with ethernet running to the house, then I'd recommend the Nighthawk AX6 or alternative equivalents from other brands such as TP-LINK.
I have the 1gb internet from BB. I use this modem from Amazon. Make sure you get one that is fast enough for those speeds. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DY16W2Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_AXG3C898WD0EW5TZCV9B?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I haven't seen it sold locally. You can pick up a 2.2lbs spool on Amazon for around $20. That would last you awhile. Better yet, for a pen, you can buy sampler packs that have a bunch of different colors. This one is $10.
Believe it or not, Amazon.
That is where my wife got her Living Stones

Take a look at Bend, Overall... he gives a number of ideas on the topic of skinny dipping.
I'm not affiliated with the book, just a fan.
Someone suggested hawk sounds, but bear with me... I know this sounds dumb... but got rid of a similar problem by putting a cheap, slightly realistic ceramic owl statue on my roof. I found one at Ross for like $10
Apparently pigeons are real dumb
I forgot to mention reading - there are a ton of good books out there if you have an e-reader and a library account or don't mind older classics from Project Gutenberg or just buy them from Amazon.
I recently finished "Bad Blood" by John Carreyrou - https://www.amazon.com/Bad-Blood-Secrets-Silicon-Startup/dp/152473165X
Good luck with your plan - getting out of the house helps a lot. We live outside the city so it is no problems to walk outside.
What model Nighthawk are you using?
I'm looking at this one:
In case I have to go back to Bend Broadband.
My BBB-purchased modem died in March of last year. I don't recall the exact conversation I had with BBB at the time, but they were okay with me using my own modem. I think the only caveat was that it had to be DOCSIS 3.0, and they couldn't provide support for it.
I ended up buying this one on Amazon, and getting it set up wasn't a big deal. It's been working great.
I bought a CTEK a year or so ago and haven't regretted it. Instead of buying a car battery every time it breaks simply restore it using this. Batteries will die very quickly in cold weather, I haven't experienced a winter yet in Bend but I get the feeling having a dead battery is common if you don't run your car for a few weeks.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006G14FK8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I also have a portable battery in my trunk, if my battery ever dies I can just hook it up and jump start it. You can also use it to charge electronic devices in emergency situations. I don't recall what thats called, I got it from Autozone.
Hope it helps.
I just went through this with Bend Broadband.
You will definitely save money if you buy a used Arris CM820A.
You'd need to invest in a wireless router as well if you don't have one, but at least you'd be able to use that router with any ISP and it's likely going to be a much higher quality than the behemoth gateways that Bend Broadband rents for $7.99 a month.
