You'll honestly be fine on the dark web as long as you don't access illegal sites such as drug sites, cp sites, etc. What I recommend for iOS is an app called Red Browser to allow you to connect to the Tor relay, a decent VPN (I'd suggest an NFO for best security but you can use anything from SoftEther to NordVPN) and a strong internet connection.
If you stay away from drugs, porn, hacking services etc, you most likely will not be found at all. You will have nothing to worry about as long as you stay away from that
If you're on mac you can: * Download toe browser from the official page * Install brew and install tor system wide with brew install tor (paste that in terminal)
Once installed systemwide you can setup your favorite browser to use the SOCKS5 proxy at localhost:9050
I know there’s a TOR app for apple.. if there’s one for Android then you’ve obviously got to download that. You need to use a VPN (TunnelBear is a good one, it’s somewhat cheap too), and as Android isn’t as safe as apple, you need to download an anti virus and an anti malware (Malwarebytes is my personal favourite).
Once you’ve done all of that, you should be safe to browse the deep web and make purchases on mobile.
> is a free VPN any good or should I pony up some cash for a paid one?
The latter. VPN providers need money to keep their servers up, and most free VPNs do so by selling your data which, obviously, is pretty much the opposite of what a VPN should do.
