Do you NEED one? No.
But it is nice. We bought and installed a cheap bidet (this one- it was only $30 when we purchased) coincidentally at the beginning of COVID when TP panic buying was happening. My partner and I live alone and buy TP in bulk from Costco and the savings are marginal (purchasing every 12-14 weeks instead of every 10-12) but the feeling (and reality!) of that super clean arsehole after taking your morning dump is priceless.
As a female, it's also really nice to be able to do a 'quick rinse' after sex or if I'm not feeling fresh and don't have time for a full shower.
Protip: Pair with a squatty-potty for the best bathroom experience
I love mine. Its far less jarring to wake up to, the light being on helps me not fall back asleep and get out of bed. I used to use just a lamp on a timer as others have suggested, and it did work, but the lamp turns on suddenly and would occasionally wake me up early. The gradual increase in light only woke me up early right at the beginning. Now I wake up when the alarm sounds (which is a gentle bird chirping, very peaceful) and feel pretty good.
Electric kettles are fast. Water Heaters (such as the gold standard Zojirushi) are objectively the best. They actually, if you use them at least every other day, are more energy efficient than an electric kettle because they don't have to reboil every time you want tea. I have one, it's lasted for near 12 years now of literal constant use and across 5 apartments and a house.
Also, since the US electric kettles boil slower than the UK, having it already ready to go is even better.
This appears to be the current version of the (discontinued) Lightspeed Laguna that I have:
To each their own but I’m a huge NO on air fryers. It’s a waste of money and more importantly space (at least for me).
Basically it is a convection oven. That’s it. If you already own an oven use the convection setting and you’re good to go. Most ovens made in the last 10+ years have a convection setting.
Air fryers are only good at reheating very specific types of things (like pizza rolls) and for 90% of the food you eat you already have a better tool in your kitchen if you have an oven, toaster oven and microwave. Many toaster ovens come with convection settings too so if you need to heat up a small amount of food and don’t want to preheat the big oven that’s what the toaster oven is for.
If you’re trying to prepare food for more than 1, mayyyyyybe two people, the air fryer wastes a massive amount of your time because it only does small quantities. The improvement over what a regular oven does is negligible.
If you really truly want the fried experience get an actual deep fryer.
I use this one for simplicities sake.
It’s stupid easy to use, easy to wash, and the flavor and texture is 100x better than any air fryer can ever achieve. Hands down.
Fried foods are really bad for you though and really should be a rare treat. You’re best off not getting any fryer at all to cut down on how much of those unhealthy foods you’re eating anyway.
I bought this one in 2018 and it’s still working great without any leaking or signs of breaking. It’s not 100% toddler proof, but you can put it on a cleaning mode- so if they turn it on, it only shoots water down into the bowl rather than up at where a butthole would be.
Having two kids (currently 4 and 2) we’ve never had an issue with them playing with it…. Except one time.
My 4 year old turned the dial and it shot a stream of water to the wall in front of the toilet. It was loud and scared him a bit, but he hasn’t touched it since.
Cold water is fine. Tap water is fine. Clean starfish is the best. Just do it.

I have this Conair handheld and love it
We also have a percussion massager but I never saw much use from me.
I have one of Body Back Buddy massage stick. It's of course does not have percussion but I like the way it's curved and can reach pretty much any pressure point. This and a high density foam roller gets more use and are more versatile in my opinion.
yes! I bought one a couple months ago for around 40 bucks off Amazon (but i have seen similar ones for 25) and I rarely get to use it because everyone in my family hogs it! I carry a lot of pain in my shoulders and it works really great getting the knots out. I also have a chronic pain in my ankle from an old injury, and it feels so good using it there. I have a couple other expensive massagers, and this one is my favorite and was the cheapest.
Cuisinart AF/Convection Oven/Toaster
I have this and I use it almost daily. It's so versatile and easy to use. Yes it makes hmgreat chicken, etc., but it makes the best damn grilled cheese you'll ever have, too. The only time I turn my oven on is if I have to make something that's too big to fit in this (AND this isn't super small).
I say no, you can use:
Libby/Overdrive thru a local library
https://librivox.org/
Ebooks/Audiobooks via TOR
If you have epub books you can use aps like Voice Dream (iphone) VoiceOver (android) and the app reads them to you, not as great as actual audio books, but still works well.
Bought this guy. I'd say 4 stars because it works and reduces pain a lot but is also slightly uncomfortable as the strap edges dig into your hand a bit. Recommended.
We can't drill into the wall at our place. We got a TV Stand to mount the TV on in our bedroom. It has worked out really well for us.
If you do purchase a new one (or rehab your existing one) I’d recommend getting one of these. They’re amazing and really help to prevent the mold issue.
personally my backpack has been a huge help for me, our buildings alarm goes off once a week and it helps me get the cat quickly out of the building and allows me to easily carry him and its not hard to carry. personally I rarely spent much on my cat, he likes straws more than toys and boxes more than beds, but the backpack was one of the best things I bought for him. I got this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KHPLFMS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_BRJ1RCTAN2K0945G1V98 and honestly the way I decide if something is worth it is I base the amount I spent off of how often I use it, I've easily used it at least 30 times which is about a dollar per time used, I'd definitely say it was worth my money. I've had it for a year and it had no damage and still holds my grown large cat :) I hope this helps you decide if a backpack is right for you
No.
The only reason you would ever buy paid AV is as a convenience because there are AVs that are faster or less annoying then other.
As far as detection rate and protection strength, pretty much all of them are on the same level.
Hackers don't even bother anymore with spreading "good" viruses, front has shifted towards phishing, internet scams, and fast one time maneuvers that avoid AV detection anyway.
What you need is an ad blocker that mostly also blocks internet scams, and you need a sandbox.
I recommend firefox with ublock origin.
If you are not into firefox, there is a project called "pihole" that does adblocking on DNS level: https://pi-hole.net/
And this: https://sandboxie-plus.com/Sandboxie/
Sandboxing is way way better solution for playing with questionable software than any existing AV.
I’ve had this one for about 15 years. Grinds any size super easy and also extremely easy to fill. Cannot recommend it enough.
Something I've recently come across that I enjoy is compression shorts (sounds more uncomfortable than it is). The pockets are big enough for phones and tight enough to keep your phone flush with your thigh. You can wear other shorts over top of them if you like, they're very breathable.
Link of what I have, for reference: Neleus Men's Compression Short with Pocket Dry Fit Yoga Shorts Pack of 3 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DCH1DC1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_BRN9F3GTW5D5PMP3W8EV?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I bought one back in January when I was in intense physical therapy and was going away on a month long trip. It has been amazing and I cannot recommend one enough.
This is the one I got and my PT said it was a “great one for the money.” They used Theraguns in their office. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088KSR5XL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_DNVwZdfXNyIux
It was $85 (I think it had a coupon at the time) and the battery in it seems to last for weeks on a single charge.
Then I would stick to a baking steel and an optional pizza stone for above the pizza. I have this one. Really happy with it, even though the oven I had in my last NYC apartment sounds like yours temperature wise, pizzas would turn out great.
i have two of these. https://www.amazon.com/Amacool-Operated-Stroller-Rotatable-Treadmill/dp/B085L71L9R/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=gorilla+arm+stroller+fan&qid=1623243525&sr=8-2 my wife thinks they are worth it and so do the two kids. the tripod is nice because then you can also set it up as a desk fan, etc
If you do electronic projects here and there I have a recommendation. Get a weller portasol. https://www.amazon.com/Weller-P2C-Butane-Soldering-Iron/dp/B000B61L0G/
It's $30 and powered by butane. No wires, gets hot enough for anything you will throw at it, and you can throw it in a drawer and forget about it until you need it. Is it cheaper than borrowing a friend's? No. Is it stupid affordable and made by THE biggest brand in soldering? Yeah. It's solid and you get more than your money's worth. My view is skewed because I do a lot of electronics projects. You can get crappy $10 - $15 soldering irons and they will probably do what you need but if your planned budget was $30, I say go with the gas one.
The main issue we were concerned about was not so much trying a bidet, but the fact that we're in a 1 bathroom apartment where visitors might be like, "wut?" So after extensive searching, the most discreet one I could find was this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TCN0NP8
Totally worth it. We are never going back. Toilet paper savings will cover it and I hate going anywhere else. A want that saves you money long term might as well be a need.
I have a Dyson HP04 which is a space heater too. It is helpful keeping our living room comfortable and I feel like it helps with the air quality.
I have a Conway air purifier in my bedroom. It doesn’t do anything other than filter and it runs 24/7. It pulls lots from the air and I happily maintain the prefilters every two weeks.
Coway AP-1512HH White HEPA Air Conway
I have a bunch of old ones lying around, and random containers I use to make shakes in. I just get replacement metal balls, I found these to mix the best.
I've been using this for 6 years:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ATJ6AJG/
Works great. There's other solutions too in this price range and more expensive, but personally I don't find the more expensive options to be worth it. I throw that into the fridge for 24-48 hours and it makes STRONG coffee concentrate. I dilute it 1-1 or 1-2 or so and it's get you up on your feet strong. It uses a lot of coffee though so I usually make like... folgers cold brew or go to costco and save the specialty beans for normal coffee.
I encourage experimenting with cold brew in your fridge. You can probably find cheaper ways to do it than this filter, it's gone up in price a bit since I originally bought it, but I do suggest giving a try. Even if it's just some cheesecloth wrapping a bunch of grounds up in a pitcher it's worth trying as a low cost of buy-in.
I don't make cold brew all the time but it comes out during the summers and I'm grateful for it. I also have a sealable carafe so that I can be working on one batch while brewing another.
Franklin Sensors FS710PROProSensor 710+ Professional Stud Finder with Built-in Bubble Level & Ruler,Yellow https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0195K8OT4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_KNAYQAW4DE6XW7TN0KA0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I’ve used this one for years. Never let me down. You just have to know how to use it. You have to approach the stud from the outside, so put it on the wall, turn it on, then start moving it slowly then when it first lights up, that’s the edge of the stud. Now come at the stud from the other direction, and that’s the other edge. It might take a couple of tries. The fancier ones might be nice, but I maybe use it a few times a year, so don’t want to spend more on it. If you’re ever in doubt, starting to slowly drill a small hole where you want your fastener to be, you’ll know as soon as you get through the drywall if there’s wood behind it. Never used it on plaster walls though.
I don’t trust the magnet ones. I’ve hung drywall and I know how easy it is to miss a stud and just leave the screw.
If you are looking for wood studs to screw/nail into a magnet works pretty well. https://www.amazon.com/CH-Hanson-03040-Magnetic-Finder/dp/B000IKK0OI/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=3EAIU8V2E6AIO&keywords=magnetic+stud+finder&qid=1639428857&sprefix=magnetic+stu%2Caps%2C102&sr=8-4 I've used this one for quite sometime. Yes it is just a magnet wrapped in SILICONE. The level is nice & it is easy to throw in the bag with your go to tools.
I was in the same position a year ago, I ended up purchasing this one. While better than most, it’s still not 100% accurate, especially with plaster walls or metal studs. A little while later, I purchased this one and it has worked great. I usually will use the magnetic one to start, and then follow up with Franklin Sensors one to try to get a better idea of what’s behind the wall.

My socket set is my most used set of tools. I tend to repair a lot of things when they break instead of replacing it. Most of the time it's screws. But now and then there's bolts/nuts that need to be removed.
It has a decent set of drivers and sockets. They're really really high quality and underpriced in my opinion especially when you consider the lifetime warranty.
The horseshoe one was the best for me. This is what I got Everlasting Comfort Office Chair Seat Cushion Pillow for Back, Coccyx, & Tailbone Pain Relief Pad https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EBDV9BU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_6S6QXQ6RNFJY49QQHXXV?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Are you going to be hiking somewhere with lots of sun? I have a Goal Zero solar panel that can plug into my phone or any other USB-chargeable device, but it takes hours of exposure to direct sunlight (i.e. not walking through tree-shaded sections) for a full charge. I would primarily use the solar charger when I’m at camp for an extended time to charge up a smaller, portable power bank.
As for power banks, I have seen this Anker model recommended on hiking subs. I foolishly spent $70 on another brand that has served me fine on three- and four-day trips, but it’s rather heavy.
Anyway, my recommendation, if you have it in your budget and will be hiking/camping in a bright, sunny place, is to get a solar panel and a separate power brick. That gives you options if you’re going on shorter trips or to places that won’t have much sun.
YES! I lived in a tiny studio too with laminate floors and a front door mat. I was using a broom and swiffer for so long and finally got a vacuum and goddamn did it save time and effort.
I now live in a one bedroom with half carpet, half laminate floors and the vacuum is even more useful!
Plus, vacuums clean that front door mat so easily and so nicely that it will look brand new!
I have an older version of this one. It's super lightweight, easy to empty, easy to maneuver around and under furniture. Highly recommend! It's worth the price, I can promise you that!
Edit: do not get a cheap one. It will break fast or just won't be useful when you move to a bigger place. If you can't afford a good one, don't bother. You'd want one that will last and be useful to you for 30+ years.
I'm not a big fan of the nespresso machines for reasons mentioned in this thread.
As an alternative, for 25 bucks you can get a 2 quart mason jar, a stainless steel filter, and make your own cold brew concentrate:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ATJ6AJG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Dump your coffee in, fill with water, seal, and refrigerate for 24 hours. Drain the filter and you have delicious delicious cold brew coffee that is STRONG and ready to be diluted with milk or ice.
I've had the one in the link for 5 years now and it's a lifesaver during the summer. Get a 2nd 2 quart mason jar or a carafe or something and you can have a steady stream of cold brew for a fraction of the nespresso.
My only complaint is that you use a *lot* of coffee making cold brew, but since it's concentrated and you can dilute 1-3 or 1-2 it works out in the end.
Fair enough but two things - cheap cast iron is definitely not known for even heating. Drop an egg on one and see how unevenly it cooks. Another reason chefs don't use them.
Secondly, you're just getting robbed for deBuyer because it's fancy imported French stuff. The pan you mentioned is less than €30 even with 'free' delivery
I have a Thinkware FA200 bundle that I have liked so far and haven't had any issues with, but I have to give it to the subreddit for the recommendation
Best one I've ever had and I continue to get is waste king, freaking amazing products customer service, and warranty (though newer ones don't get lifetime from what I've gathered)
If you decide from the others that you need one, this one has worked well for me: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017OAPPC6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_Z1XGK1XV38KZ8G7BSX9S?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I’ve used it every day for the last year. Works great.
For short trips, I just put normal sunglasses over top of my regular glasses. It probably looks dumb but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But if I’m going to be wearing them any length of time, I use these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NOSUG22/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_ZTB8DEWJ5XHXR41CK7YG
They’re just tinted safety glasses and I think they’re one of my best purchases in a long time. I wear them while driving and while working outside. The fact that they wrap around with the side shields means they sit better on my face and it keeps wind and dust out of my eyes. They do look kinda dorky, but it’s also a pretty cheap solution.
I prefer my little tent like this one for the beach https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C5N2SLY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_PMG99NQ5TZSMM5A2CAVC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It is much easier to carry than an umbrella and it stays up pretty well.
As to whether or not you need one - sun protection really is important, but if you only go to the beach for a couple of hours at a time, probably you can do without. If you are more of the stay and play all day type, I think you do need one.
Honestly since you were saying you didn't know what your situation will be in the future I think it would make sens.
I used to do that and it's a great space saver. Just some under bed bags would do it. If you end up moving your stuff will already be packed.
Otherwise there are plastic bin equivalent also, with or without wheels
You might want to consider getting a door strap and pinch like this one, the pinch keeps the door from latching and the strap keeps the door from swinging open all the way (it attaches to the wall with adhesive strops so you don't have to make holes in the walls). They let you keep doors permanently cracked so that cats can enter and leave whenever they want.
If you just want to ensure that the closet doors cannot close, I found that the baby link rings will fit on a door.
They work the same as a door stop wedge guards that wrap around a door so that it cannot close.
If youre going to get one id recommend this kind
Evelots Mesh Shower Caddy-Organizer-6 Pockets-Shampoo-Soap-Razor-Quick Dry https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08MMS7DGC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_XY10BBN5RYMVYRTCPW5M?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
or something similar which hangs on the shower rod.
They're not that expensive, you can pick up the ones that clip onto your toilet very cheap on Amazon etc and in the long run you'll regain that in toilet paper savings.
https://www.amazon.com/Luxe-Bidet-Neo-185-Elite/dp/B00P2XZIP2/
Of course you can get the high end fancy ones with heated water and seatwarmers etc but they're really not necessary.
I got this thermos about a year ago and I LOVE it https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-Classic-Vacuum-Insulated-Bottle/dp/B092K6YHTW it holds a quart (2 quart is also available), stays cold, holds ice for a long time, and is much cheaper than a hydro flask
We got a fancy one with heated seat and all. Visitors have been known to come out of the bathroom raving about how the heated seat is the most luxurious thing ever.
