Except the infantry is in power armor so carrying something in 12.7 mm is not a difficult task. Admittedly the infantry is one of things I don’t think the show translated well. Here they are in the manga. so yes if I’m in power armor I can easily imagine shooting and scooting with something chambered in 12.7.
As for the terrain, on the front slope of the hull is where you want to build, or more specifically the military crest. A military crest is defined as "An area on the forward or reverse slope of a hill or ridge just below the topographical crest from which maximum observation and direct fire covering the slope down to the base of the hill or ridge can be obtained."
Books are in pretty much any popular bookstore:
here's an Amazon link But beware before you click, the covers themselves & the mini description of each is spoiler-ish.
> It has so far been the only book I've read where I've had to re read so many sentences and work my head around vague but also somehow weirdly specific physical locations and action scenarios.
Hence why so many LN readers themselves admit they have no clue what's happening in the action scenes as written.
It took me until Volume 4 to be able to properly process the action scenes, and it's probably because it mostly takes place in tight confined spaces in subway tunnels. And in V4's afterword, Asato mentioned she used an artbook called Railway Corridor as a reference guide, so that likely contributed to helping with the visualization of the battle sequences.

If you want to pick up where the show left off start at Vol. 4
> Probably don’t want to mention nukes and war together If you’re Japanese as well
Didn't stop one of Asato Asato's favorite authors from having the good guys use nukes regularly.
Here's a link for the paperback version, I hoped it works for you: https://www.amazon.com/86-EIGHTY-SIX-Vol-light-novel-Passionis/dp/1975349962/ref=tmm\_pap\_swatch\_0?\_encoding=UTF8&qid=1654626238&sr=8-1
Normal price is around 40-50 dollars. It's among the more expensive HG's. You can get other versions for cheaper though. I particularly like the heavy weapons and long range version (as you can just replace the attachment)
That fido is actually from the official model https://www.amazon.com/Bandai-Hobby-Juggernaut-General-SpiritsHobby/dp/B08RB7C4G2/ref=psdc_166111011_t1_B08RB7F6HX
has nice detail but lacks color and joints... may paint it some day~
For Volume 4, it's probably a lot clearer in her head while she was writing because she was using this book as a reference guide when designing the metro system in the novel.
I'm also quite new to this hobby, but I think you should at least have a side cutting pliers (to cut the part from the runner) and a tweezer (to apply stickers), some people also refer to have a paint pen (usually gundam marker) to apply paint on model (specially for mechanical details), and some other tools (like cutting blade) to make the model kit look better and cleaner.
I believe there are some tools kit which is a good starting point.
Cool. I found a 9 tool gunpla kit on Amazon for 10 bucks https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071LB1T5D/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=AUGKL3EVR9OAM&psc=1. Will that be sufficient for basic modding?
