40W is the stock bulb type for all the 16 and 17 inch ones that I've seen. 25w for the 11-14 inch. 100w for the grande. When in doubt you can always go larger and use a dimmer. I use this one so now I can not only dim, but control it with my phone, or even Alexa, if I had an Alexa anyways. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086V3S2Q7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

this is the link to the one i got off amazon, if you don’t want to support bezos and have disposable income here’s the link to the manufacturer. Didn’t buy from them directly so can’t speak on shipping or anything
Search for “lamp dimmer” on Amazon?
Popular models include the Leviton TBL03 or the Lutron Credenza.
This would probably work.
Shouldn’t have to spend over $10 bucks on the part. If you’re getting a lamp cord, try to find one with the switch built in. I used one that’s braided. Looks pro
You're supposed to let them warm up to room temp before turning them on. Mine arrived frozen solid. They were going to ship me a replacement but then just refunded me instead. I've been cycling it on and off for a couple of weeks and still can't hardly see whats happening inside, lol.
I bought one of these... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FA2RLX2?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
As soon as I figure out what caps are needed I'm getting a bottle capper and opening her up to see if I can filter it clear...
I’d turn the dimmer down a touch. My first dimmer was controlled with a slider and I quickly realized that getting to the same % of dimmer as the last time I used it was difficult. So now I have 6 of these that I use. The app is great for automating time on and off and reducing to the desired % at a set time as well so they heat up at 100% and reduce at the right time.
Take away the converter all together and get an adapter https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DTRHB5I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Then your 110 will work. You're trying to put 240V through a 110V rated bulb. If I'm understanding correctly
I use this dimmer, well I use 3 of them. You can set on time and off time and set it to dim to a % at a specific time which is great. I set the on times so they’re warmed up when I’m home from work, I set a % change time so they go to my ideal setting once they’re warm and I set a hard off time so they don’t run while I sleep.

Getting a dimmer on the plug would make more sense then looking for a bulb. Especially since you get them for only a few bucks for the simple mechanical ones, to around 30 for smart dimmers. I use this smart one and I love being able to run it from my phone or tablet and set schedules for it to turn on and off automatically. They also let you fine tune the flow since you can change the power up and down by 1% at a time.
I think I'll get a 25 watt bulb because that's what people with the same model lamp I have use on Amazon.ca
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07YBP65MP/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A18KQ287CBMN7O&psc=1
Half an inch from the bottom of the outside cap sounds about right. It needs that air gap to take up the pressure as it heats since water doesn't compress. At least not easily. When it finishes heating that gap should be gone.
To directly answer your question though, it's not hard, it's just a pain. The lid is crimped on and you have to go around with a small flat head screw driver and bend off the lip of the lid. That's the easy part though. Resealing if you're going to try and reuse that cap is a lot harder to recrimp the parts you bent away from the glass. When I opened mine to dump it so I could have white wax for my color changing lamp, I just bought one of these kinds of plumbers plug instead to reseal. It also lets you get into the lamp easily since when you're making one from a kit you often need to mess with the surfactant amounts to get it to flow properly. Flowing properly is why I don't recommend adding distilled water to answer your second question. Lava lamps are actually fairly fine tuned and adding water can easily effect how it flows.
i use this one! works as a dimmer and a smart plug. there is an app that you can use to set it on a timer. it’s life changing haha.
TREATLIFE Outdoor Dimmer for... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B086V3S2Q7?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
If you can use an extension cord, you can use a dimmer. It’s just a cord that plugs in between the lamp and the wall and has either a dial, a slider or connects to an app. I use this one well I use three of them. I like the ones with an app as you can set timers, on/off time and dial in the same % every time
The ones Im seeing are all 14.5 inches and I think they're sourced out of vietnam. Amazon has them too for like 1/3 more. I'd take my chances with eBay.
https://www.amazon.com/fun-Funtime-14-5-Inch-Plasma-Lamp/dp/B016AINOIK
I never tried acetone, I used normal paint thinner and superfine steel wool to take the paint off my ruby red with white wax. lol I didn't know it had the black paint fade, I just thought the pic was a bad 3d render, when I got it it looked god awful like a child painted it or something. I looked it up to specifically find something that wouldn't scratch the glass and was recommended that steel wool and it worked perfectly. No scratches.
Good luck with it. I'm going to try adding some leds. I'm going to use WLED and the JSON API. For the hardware I'm going to put one of these rings in the base.
With Astro's I've noticed that using the small halogen bulbs Mathmos provides they usually have trouble flowing. I use wider halogen bulbs. https://www.amazon.com/Halogen-Dimmable-Replacement-Candle-Lifespan/dp/B085HGXRJG These are offered with 120v so I can also get away with just using a plug adapter. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0967M1Y38
Maybe I'm not looking at the right thing than. I'm looking at this here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GFQ8PBV/
And there's only a single plug. This was linked to in another post in here among several suggestions for simple dimmers. I don't think there's any way to connect more than one lamp to this. I'd already be plugging this into a surge protector with multiple outlets. So I don't think it would be a great idea to plug an extension cord into this dimmer, then multiple lamps into the extension cord. That seems like too many plugs daisy-chaining together.
I've seen some expensive smart dimmers with two outlets, but it costs more than buying multiple dimmers.
I prefer smart dimmers over the (lol I find it funny 2 different people linked the same one when there are ten zillion different dimmers. :) ) the manual one they linked. For only around 10 bucks more I use this particular one. Smart dimmers are nice because you can turn the lamp on and off with your phone or tablet. You can set schedules to do that for you automatically. And you can change the power by 1% of power at a time so it's easier to fine tune the wax flow as much as you can. That's all easily worth 10 more bucks in my book. There are other smart dimmers that are cheaper than that one too I just didn't spend a lot of time to shop around for something so inexpensive to find a more economical option.
I didn’t realize an in-line dimmer and dimmer switch are different. I ordered this
Most lamps are just a light bulb that heats up the bottle and shines up through it. You will want to find out what type of bulb your lamp has and make sure to get the right kind of dimmer, but this is a fairly generic option -
https://www.amazon.com/Lutron-Credenza-Halogen-Incandescent-TT-300H-WH/dp/B0000BYEF6
The lamps are usually made to work best with the bulb running at full power, dimming may change the temperature in your bottle and make it not function as expected. You should check with the manufacturer to see if they recommend a particular dimmer for your lamp.
IDK what you mean by extensions lead. I'm talking about something you can plug the cable in to reduce the power the lamp will get. I use this particular one. Smart dimmers are nice because you can use your phone or tablet to turn it on and off. You can also set up schedules to do that automatically. It lets you fine tune the power down to 1% at a time.
I use this particular one. Tons of other options that are cheaper though. I just didn't shop around very long before I went with it. I generally don't spend that much time on 20 something buck items.
Had fun making these this evening. I just used some liquid paraffin, SLS, and distilled water. Colored the LP with liquid wax dye. Colored the water with food dye/calligraphy ink.
Added the SLS to the tubes before filling after trying to make a few without it. The water just makes one blob that stubbornly doesn't want to move due to capillary action.
These are very eye catchy and I colored them similar to lava lamp colorways. All of mine have the 'lava' represented by colored water since I find it easier to agitate when it's at the bottom instead of floating on the top.
Tried baby oil first and found it broke up into droplets too easily. Liquid paraffin was perfect.

I have two of these each dimmer has two plugs you can adjust 2 lamps separately and set individual schedules. Whatever you get I highly recommend getting a digital one that works with an app so you can dial in exactly the same % every time. It can be tough to do with the slider or dial based dimmers
See if you find a plumber's plug that will fit the diameter. I use this kind (though not that particular size) on my grande.
It needs to be completely sealed so what evaporates will just condense back into the liquid.
I use this one
I have 2 of them. It says it’s compatible with Alexa and Google home, but I don’t use those. I use the app that the dimmer had me get. I like the scheduling on it. Set em to turn on a little bit before I’m home from work. You can also set it to change light intensity at a specific time, so once you know how long it takes to warm all the way up and what % you prefer a lamp at, you can automate that as well. I have also set them on a schedule everyday so they turn off at night at the right time.
Get a dimmer switch. Something like this has worked for me. https://www.amazon.com/TOPGREENER-Table-Top-Dimmer-Incandescent-Halogen/dp/B07DL2HV9F/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?keywords=plug+in+dimmer+switch&qid=1661031877&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzRFlISVRFVDk0SVpMJmVuY3J5cHR...
These kind of plumber's plug works great. I use it (though make sure you measure and get the right diameter. That's not the link of mine but just an example of the kind I used) on my color changing grande that I did a magma tower gookit in, becasue I wanted to be able to keep opening it easily to fine tune the surfactant.
For those kinds you can dremel the for lack of a better word, spokes of the top so it can be tightened lower than it normally can. Then you replace the wingnut with a normal nut. Like this. That was the thread I found that let me know that plumber's plugs are a good thing to use to recap at least grande sized lamps. But unfortunately mine didn't turn out well. It wouldn't seal good enough. So I got this kind (though not that specific one, that was just the first link I found to show a pic of the type. I forget what size diameter is needed) and it works perfectly and the cap sits down over it just fine.
Probably don’t have it. If you can look inside the base and see all the way to the bottom, it’s gone. That’s VERY common, so don’t worry. Here is an Amazon link for the bulbs. Here are the dimmers I use. Just unplug the lamp, unscrew the screws holding on the current switch. Snip the wire of required so you have 2 separate ends, plug side and lamp side. Strip back about ¼”, insert into the terminals, tighten the clamps. Screw on the top cover and you’re done!
What kind of adapter do you have? I use this step up transformer to convert 110v to 220v and it seems to work fine for my Astro.

I wonder if a ceramic heat bulb like the ones used to heat reptile enclosures would work? They produce heat without light.
I have been playing with diy, and been using some solid dyes, I found when mixing the bright yellow and royal blue, I get almost the opposite of the op’s colors. At the bottom of the lamp, wax is a burgundy wine color, as it rises, it turns green. In fact I can’t get these dyes to stay the same color when heated, blue turns purple, black turns violet, red leeches out into the water, etc. here’s a link to the dye Candle Dye Set, 16 Colors Candle... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093QZSCPP?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I have the exact same lamp, OP! You’ll love it. If you’re in the US, you’ll need to change the bulb. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need a transformer.
If you don’t want to use a dimmer, this is an exact bulb replacement: These bulbs work just fine, but leave little control.

120V GU10 MR16 50W bulb wherever you can get it. The specs of the stock bulb are 2700K color temperature and 36° flood angle, so you may want to shoot for something similar. I got Bulbrite brand and it’s working great. You can also try 35W MR11, but in my experience it didn’t supply enough heat to get good flow.
I got the Road Warrior which looks like it’s a long-time product from an established company, and it’s been working no problem. Lamp plugged into adapter then into dimmer then wall.

No voltage conversion necessary this way. Much easier.
Yes too hot and yes it CAN fuck it up. IDK if it's hot enough to do that though I just know too much can jack it. That much stuck on top means it's too hot.
Get a dimmer on the plug and then it'll no longer matter that your bulb it too high of a watt. I use this smart dimmer because I like being able to fine tune down to a single percentage of power at a time, plus I can turn on and off with my phone or tablet. But there's lots of other dimmers out there that aren't as expensive that'll work.
not sure if available in your country/region:

Just tested it, lamp works a little slower. May add some insulation in the base. Good enough for the price imo
I found these on Amazon a long while back, they fit the 14.5" model really well. It's a tiny bit loose but not really noticeable as it sits at the same level as the originals.
No. Without going into too much detail, you're not going to be able to find three liquids that won't mix with each other. Any third liquid you find will mix with one or both of the other two. Things like this toy are separated internally, like having two lamps joined together.
My goal is to make a lava lamp that's *completely* custom. I do have a lamp that I'll try refurbishing first, and I'll definitely wait until I'm successful with that before starting on filling the custom lamp. Most of my experimentation will probably be with lab equipment like this: https://smile.amazon.com/SUPERLELE-Graduated-Cylinder-Beaker-Droppers/dp/B07PDVSL9N/.
What nail polish stuff are you referring to?
Ouch, that sucks. At least you caught it in time. I made sure to shield the hell out of my wiring in my grande, and I yanked the inner ring out of my 16 inch. In the 16 inch it melted the wiring 3 times because the bulb was right up next to the wires. I'd resolder and try and to shield them but nothing would work so I gave up on it. But they just melted and didn't actually burn. Like there was zero smoke. What were you using to shield the heat? In my grande I wrapped them in tin foil then wrapped them in this stuff.
I'm just gonna copy/paste my last comment.
Since you don't want to get a higher wattage bulb, get a wax warming 35Watt bulb, They're slightly larger, but fit the base fine as long as it's a GU10 It may warm it up better despite being the same wattage.

Well, you need any wall transformer that is 12V and 800mA or more you can plug 220V to 120V ac transformer are expensive wall transformer are real cheap. At an electronic store or equivalent you can get for cheap wall transformer where you can't select the voltage and have multiple barrel to adapt to the lamp
I use the following for my Astro and Telstar and have had no issues

also are you sure it’s called blue liquid with pink wax? sometimes the colors they call them don’t match what they actually are. like i have one with purple liquid that’s actually more like a pink/magenta. i ask because they put demo videos of them on youtube. like actual videos of them running, so you can see what they really look like rather than just the image on the box. it might just be that that color is usually darker in general
what color did you get?
I was looking up bulbs as well so I can have some spares on hand. 15 is really low for a lava lamp - if you can get a 20 and a 25 at a local hardware store you could experiment?

I’ve been using these For a few months now, I run three 40w lamps per dimmer.
This is the one I got Lava the Original 16.3-Inch Silver Base Lamp with Yellow Wax in Purple Liquid https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001MWSVP6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_J27K0EWK0NKD5ZDM4YEW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Off the top of my head it sounds like your easiest option would be to find a bulb with the correct base that works with US voltage, then you’re not hunting around for 220v bulbs when it eventually burns out, or worrying about using an inverter to convert our US 120V voltage to 220V.
So you’ll need to determine what bulb base the lamp uses. Most US lamps use what is called an E26, running at 120V in various wattages based on whatever brightness you need/the fixture can handle. European countries use different bases, and during that era I can’t even take a random guess as to what that lamp might use. Wattage is important, for incandescent bulbs the higher the wattage the hotter it’ll get; if you get lucky you’ll probably be able to find the base you need with an LED, and then it’ll take years to burnout.
Once you find a bulb, it’s just a matter of getting a universal adapter that goes from that euro plug to our US outlets. I bought these, they work for most euro countries, but if it’s a twist lock you might need another type. Your other option is to replace the plug, it’s a lot easier than most people think, and replacement plugs can be found at any hardware store. I like these wherever you find them.
Good luck with your lamp!
A standard plug in dimmer like this is what I use, I’m in the UK so it may be a different design if you live elsewhere
Went with this one recommended by another user, it has a little fan that seems to run constantly, so I tucked it under my desk to muffle the slight drone but still allow airflow. I was also looking at KCC Scientific if I decide to buy a few more Mathmos, they’re pricier but you can even change the cycle from 60hz to 50hz. Most voltage converters won’t do that, but the bulb in the Mathmos seems to be fine running with a few more cycles.
This is the one I ended up with, there’s a little fan that runs somewhat constantly, so I tucked it out of the way under a desk to muffle the drone. Make sure whatever bulb you put it in shows 230/240V etched near the top of the threads, a 120V R39 bulb would screw in but when you push 230V from the transformer it’ll pop. The bulb you’d need is below as well!
Almost any paraffin blend from that company is good.
The ad said they were 100% paraffin wax.....but they were also colored black, so Im not sure if that can technically be true? Or perhaps they are just cursed since they are actually witchcraft candles! 😬🧙♀️🧹😅
Hmmm, i would maybe try going up to a 30w. Ive never owned a 14.5" lamp but i do have a 20oz lamp where i had to replace the 30w bulb for a 40w.
Heres a link to them: https://www.amazon.com/Magic-shell-Reflector-Replacement-Light/dp/B0859F2QHY/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=30w+reflector+bulb&qid=1628356511&sprefix=30w+re&sr=8-4
It was 10 bulbs not 12 but they are even cheaper now. $76.

I found this one, which is said to be pure SLS no additives. This should be okay right? Its liquid, which might be better than powder?
I just realized i ordered the wrong one. Sodium Lauryl SulfACETATE SLSA. Do you know if this will work, or should I reorder the correct SLS?
Ive been using this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0022QOSDK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_EKCNAJPP4HGPDSXRP948?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Along with a UK style power strip to run 5 mathmos lights. Been working well for a year so far. I just leave the power strip on and turn the converter on/off so they all operate on one switch.
Gotta find a blue tinted bulb for white light, I haven't tried these yet but they should of be whiter

Personally I use these but they're hard to find and don't fit in bases like the regular XL size or anything. It's gotta be like a century or more open on the inside like the ceramic series were. But they're definitely white light and it creates a way better look whether on lava or glitter.
Thanks! It’s a tapestry made by Sunshine Joy, It’s huge and the quality is perfect!
I have the 2000 Lavalite (chicago) remake of this called the wizard hat.I always had flow issues too, because the base is too big and open. I took a pop can, cut off the top, then made 10-15 slits from the top to the base then fit it under the blub, so the cut ends come up under the lip for the glass. It contains more of the heat and reflects it up to the glass. never changed it since and they flow great.
I understand that part. what im wondering is if you used that same address f2m gave you as the billing address?
Also, found another guy on this subreddit say he was going to use this to convert the different voltages. Another person he was answering in the replies mentioned it be good.

IDK, I've only ever owned 1 so I have nothing to compare against and there is tons of them out there from manual to smart ones. I bought this one because I can now control it from my phone and the app can expand to other smart devices down the road if I so choose. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086V3S2Q7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Over heating will have lots of tiny droplets and most of the lava stuck at the top. Like in the far right picture in this link.
It's easy to fix over heating with a simple dimmer like this.
Well if I was going to try and remove it I would try Xylol(Xylene)
You will probably want something with a long handle to clean inside. I found a 24" long reach scraper handy(OoS on Amazon) you can clamp other stuff in it other then a razor blade, Like Scratch pads.

Lava Lamps are still new to me, so I could be wrong, but I think it may be just a little bit too hot. As the temporary solution you could try running it without the metal cap on top. You make want to buy a dimmer cord so you can turn the bulb down a little bit.

You can turn it off for a little while. Or, I use an adjustable dimmer to turn down the brightness. Something like this works well
Wish i had bought earlier. I didn’t realise the candle would light up the wax as well and as much as it does ! Always need to get the taller tea lights tho , otherwise it doesn’t heat up properly. Or illuminate as well. These are the make that they supply with the lamp (only 3 mind)

I like how dark the wax looked and it seemed decent from the pictures but some of the reviews still seem mixed
