Amber night lights are perceived dimmer then conventional. Blocking the top part of the lens with tape would make this type almost too dim.
You should be able to put opaque tape over any nightlight to control brightness. Many people put tape over LEDs in bedrooms

Hi, You need to look for an equivalent set of LED replacements. They are easy to find. Ideally, you want to do a generic search on Amazon for "MR16 LED gu3.5 base"......but a word of caution, there's a lot of variance in the unknown brands when it comes to the stated power consumption compared to what the lamp is supposed to actually replace. For example, I went to Wal-Mart and bought a set of Great Value MR16 LED's (Warm White) and put them in halogen landscape lighting and they've been surprisingly awesome and I've had no issues. But I've had a lot of issues buy no-name brand LED lamps from Amazon....so you want to watch out for that.
Also, if you have the patience, try to a set that specifies the beam angle, a wider angle in your kitchen will be better if you want the light to be more distributed.
I would trust the AmazonBasics or Phillips before I bought a no-name brand, but if you frequently shop at Wal-Mart, I will say that I am suprisingly satisified with the MR16's that I put into some of my old halogen landscape lighting.
When choosing these lamps, make sure that you choose the color temperature carefully, anything marketed as "day light" will be a pure, unnatural white. You want to pick the soft/warm option when choosing a color.
Heat/Fire isn't a concern if you go with an LED BR30.
I'm a lighting designer, and for general lighting I pretty much always recommend BR's over PAR's unless its over a counter top or something of that sort.
Also, a simple LED retrofit trim is easy to install and looks great. Based on the info you gave im assuming it's a 4" can. Something like this:

The 3000k option for your house.
Hmm, not sure if any of the normal controllable bulbs can do a certain color at a certain time by default.
However. Both LiFx and Hue have IFTTT support, which is a cloud based recipe system, that you can program the bulbs to do things when you want. IE: Blink Blue when you get a text message, or turn off when your phone leaves your home WiFi. So, it SHOULD be able to program schedules to turn on at a certain time and color.
I haven't signed in for ages, but https://ifttt.com/lifx/recipes
What type of socket does this lamp have? If it's just wires you could put something like this together with a huge heatsink into the lamp, 150w leds are reeeaaally bright. It might flicker though because it'll be driven with AC. The only way you can get rid of flicker is with a power supply that can smooth the voltage.
The new light we suggest will be LED and not create too much heat.
How about this high quality disk you can disassemble the bits for ceiling mounting and heavy-duty double stick the item directly to your housing.

https://www.atlantalightbulbs.com/fixtures/led-fixtures/wafer-light/wfexc6-sw3pin-ft4-u/
You would mount the little power supply behind a little wood frame you create for the base on the wall.
Why not get some new from US Amazon and run them on a little stepdown transformer or wire them in series for 220v?
https://www.amazon.com/Twinkle-Star-Incandescent-Decoration-Multicolor/dp/B08BJWSXK6
You'll probably need to replace the driver (the box in the center). Look for one matching the specs listed on the existing one. Something like this one: https://www.amazon.com/APC-16-350-Mean-Well-350mA-Driver/dp/B00FRBNA68/ref=mp_s_a_1_3_mod_primary_new?dchild=1&keywords=350ma+led+driver&qid=1607480478&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sprefix=350mA+&sr=8-3
LED work on DC( except for AC LEDs). Your LED strips need to have a intermediate driver (Ac to DC convert with step down voltage to 12V)
Your solution is use power adaptor from 240V AC to 12V DC
https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-100-240V-Transformers-Switching-Adaptor/dp/B019Q3U72M
You can connect LED strip to the edge of this adaptor. Only thing is check you have enough current capacity in the picked adaptor ( based on number of LEDs in the strip)
I use these for lightweight lights, they’re cheap and relatively easy to work with

Lighting designer here:
It depends on what your goal is and whether you're going to install a housing or just use a trim. In general 4" (or even bigger) is a better option for output, distribution, availability, replacment parts, etc. - anything under 4" is really reserved for narrow flood optics when lighting a specific area. There are great 3" architectural downlights that are fine for general lighting but they get super expensive. Also, if you specifically want to light the wall instead of the general area, you can/should install an actual wall washer or a gimbal:
Really just in general I recommend 4"
If you do go with 3" and you want to use lamps instead of an integrated fixture, there are Philips Hue MR16's that will fit, just make sure you get cans with a GU10 pin base.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WTJZCZL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fab_oErFFb2J3GHGP
You want LED A19 - between 7 and 12 watts - 3000K color temperature.
Example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KK93VD9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_MLdtFbW5Q4TY4
But really, any lamp with a medium base (E26) will work.
Also, if you havent thought about it yet I suggest buying something along these lines. Just as easy to install as a light bulb but it looks really clean. Makes it look like a whole new LED fixture. It just installs into the socket like a bulb.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L119YVL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_MVUgFbYDZ6H5F

Or use a programmable one like from Legrand or Lutron.
I can't help exactly, but you are looking for the term "warm to dim" or "dim to warm", which involves two different color temp chips/phosphor on the inside. As it dims, it'll dim the cooler temp first, making it nice and warm when it's not output much light.
example: https://www.amazon.com/Philips-LED-Flicker-Free-Technology-2200K-2700K/dp/B07W6JQ2RL
Thank you for the input. We are looking for a pretty basic set up here. The basement will mainly just be used as a place to watch TV. My main concern was spacing them out to have equal distribution of light throughout the space. Specifically I am not sure how to arrange lights above the TV viewing area.
The downlights I am looking at are 1200 lumens, with selectable color temp (will use a warmer temp). I thought that these would work fine for this application. Here is a link: https://www.amazon.com/SYLVANIA-General-Lighting-61405-Recessed/dp/B084XWJPVL?th=1
Here is a Link to this type of socket, the title lists various types of globes that should fit.
Can you find the transformer for this light? It'll tell you the output voltage which will help you choose the right bulb.
>not sure if that would look good
Nope.
>if they’d give off enough light
Also nope.
One of the best solutions I've seen for this kind of task is a torchiere type lamp. The old halogen ones used to put out a huge amount of light upward, which uses your ceiling as a giant bounce and does a good job of filling a room with light. The new LEDs ones aren't quite as powerful, but they do a decent approximation (though you might want more than one, depending on the size of your apartment. Look for the flat, round panel types (not recommending this specific one, it just happens to be the first one that comes up on Amazon).
It is called a GX53 base LED module. Here's one on Amazon.
I haven't seen that base in 5 years. There was an effort by some companies (I had a Toshiba prototype) to have this be a widely used standard base, but seems to have been pushed aside. I thought it was part of the Zhaga standard, and probably used their work as an open standard, but it only has two pins, which means power-only, no dimming or communication lines for use with control systems. But the intended advantage over Standard base lamps are that it has a compact lamp, finger-safe socket and enough real estate in the lamp to dissipate heat and put in some good power electronics. But, I guess nobody bought them.
I always forget how to add more text to video posts. I've been looking into getting some LED strip lighting and some diffusers. Does anyone have suggestions on good setups for this type of lighting in my space? ie should I avoid certain walls, go over the mirror, etc.
Those were made with a surface mounted linear LED fixtures. Many manufacturers make them in custom formats to make custom shapes. A custom one is going to be expensive, plus exterior rated versions are going to be harder to come by. Dado has some good reference images.
A DIY alternate would be a system of linkable segments like these, which saves you the trouble of assembling fixtures.
You could potentially do it with LED tape and extrusions, but 6" is very wide to try and light with LED tape.
I just spotted these on amazon :
https://www.amazon.com/Dimmable-Hardwire-Cabinet-Flexible-Waterproof/dp/B09B64TRGZ/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=Enersystec&qid=1665616949&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIzLjUwIiwicXNhIjoiMi43MiIsInFzcCI6IjIuNzkifQ%3D%3D&sr=8-4
Looks like they can be hard wired into the lamp wiring, and they are cuttable so I might be able to run a small strip behind the glass tube to light it up from behind.
You can buy these at the hardware store or on amazon. I've got the same ones in my dining room ceiling. I'm moving over to all LED as they burn out.

Can I have a picture to give the best idea? Are you working with one fixture in your room? Or what do you have all together? I recently installed a led fixture with RGB in a friends room, came out beautifully.

I would put in an-inline dimmer on the cord, use the mogul-to-edison adapter and then use a half-chrome filament-led bulb.
Like this
hard shadow like that is from something that's more of a point source "spot" or projector beam (vs "flood" light)
this is a very narrow version for hitting a mirror ball and has rgb lights in it (in general will get a little fringing of the different colors but when doing single colors will be the effect you are describing)
Get 4 of these. It will light the area with ease.
The cheapest offer I could find was this one. And even then, this one is on sale for 40% at the moment.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M09PBYX?language=en_US

If my math is correct, its about 82 cents per 1 ft. In comparison, the actual lights I bought were 18 cents per 1ft, which to me is just kinda wack...
>it is the standard led strip that i use for my computer.
Assuming WS2812b or similar.
Controller or if you feel like getting DIY with WLED you can use a microcrontroller.
I have one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Xiaomi-Mi-Bedside-Lamp-White/dp/B07SPH2Y3X/
They have a “night mode” which is very dim (barely visible in day and very subtle at night). It’s very useful as a night light.
If you can, a motion-detector light is best for deterring burglars. Here's an example (although only 15w).
They cost 90 dollars each and don't come with a hub included sadly.
That's why I was looking at this on:
i don't know of a good one, i've never tried them, but i do like them.
a quick search on amazon shows this has pretty good reviews.
Nothing specific, but something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Recessed-Daylight-Dust-proof-Commercial-BRILLIRARE/dp/B099NGV8KQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_10?keywords=Suspended+LED+Lights&qid=1654756415&sr=8-10
You might want to read up on the light temperature and choose something warmer than 5000K though, but for work/office space, 5000k may actually be ideal. Also the light shloud have CRI at least 90 (which this does)
Inexpensive, work well, thin so the lights will install easily between floors and interface with lutron caseta dimmers well for easy dimming and control.

Although I wouldn't say I recommend them. There are also LED versions that I have found to be hit or miss.
This is a super neat idea.
I don't think you're going to find a specific cable for this application though, you would need to terminate the main cable before it splits off into the three seperate cables.
You could try to ghetto rig it with something like this, trying to isolate the splitter portion and installing your own SO cable.i can't find anything like this by itself though.

Could you tell me about the fold up shades?
We have really tall vaulted ceilings. Highest point is 22ft, with no attic space above. Just rafters. It took a while for me to find the perfect recessed lights. I used these and we -love- them. High lumens, gimbals, and adjustable color temp. We set ours to 4K and I added more lights, (then less as suggested by some) and it’s been amazing. It really changed the look and feel of our house.

I like the puck idea! I bought my wife this one from Amazon. Thought I'd at least have a little fun with it!
Steal the reflector from a cheap clampy-type work light and use that. If it's not adequate, at least then you have a surface to attach additional shade. These lights are much cheaper at your local big box hardware store...or even walfart.
I'm in CA, but I would be going LED whatever path I take. It's just so much more energy efficient per lumen that it's hard to ignore. There are way more options than what a contractor usually picks from: the shelves at Home Depot.
You have a few things going on that you have to consider for your needs.
I thought the Lotus brand remodel style lights looked pretty good. I almost bought those, but thought the beam angle was too narrow. I now wonder if that was a false worry. They also have their own smart dimmer switch that should obviously be well integrated.

I've spent a whole bunch of time researching this and even called Philips just now. Looks like
a) the "warm glow" 6" downlights are only made for use with cans, which I don't have
b) they are discontinued :/ and seems as though they are counting on interested customers using Hue instead, which is far more expensive.
Looks like you can still get your hands on them for now, but would have to figure out a can solution.

The bulbs that he meant to go in those fixtures are chrome top A19's.
https://www.amazon.com/Bulbrite-60A19HM-Half-Chrome-Shape/dp/B000GWKJZ8
The whole point of these is that the light that's emitted bounces off the chrome top and onto that piece of vinyl which prevents you from looking directly at the light source while still giving illumination. I see you have something that looks like a pit light there right now. If you're going to keep using that there's no real need for the vinyl since the light doesnt get reflected back to begin with.
That link gave me all the info I need.
Unfortunately with this being a non-dim fixture, your options are slim and not exactly elegant.

I ended up not using the A19 bulbs.
I pulled the covers off most of my lights and realized they were actually 6" cans with retrofit LED lights, capable of BR30, BR40, PAR30, PAR38 bulbs. I picked up some NICOR Lighting 6 inch White Recessed Shower Trim with Albalite Lens covers with trim that look nice and diffuse the light well.
I was unaware of the EcoSmart DuoBright series. I was starting to think there were no good options unless I went with a smart dimmer switch, like the expensive Brilliant, that could dim smart bulbs instead of standard dimmers.
EcoSmart DuoBrights with standard dimmers look MUCH more cost effective than Philips Hue White Ambiance with Brilliant switches.

Yeah I doubt we'd be able to get that strength of cyan even if we could precisely produce a single perfect wavelength. If that's true, we'd need direct control of the pathways/cones in the eyes to experience a perfect cyan quale outside of that optical illusion I made.
Colour changing light bulbs Flux style would be fantastic! If it can support up to an incredibly bright 2500 lux 6000K during the day to help especially during the winter to produce seratonin (thus lifting spirits and to help with SAD etc.), and a dim 10-50 lux orange light (more red than 2700K!) during the night to wind down, then even better. See my post here which you may find interesting.
Coincidence number two: I've just finished version one of a Flux-like program called SunsetScreen. It's better than F.lux because you can set the exact colours and times for both the sunset and sunrise. I think this is a better approach than basing the colour changes on the real sunset/sunrise times (which during the winter in many places would make a very short day, and therefore at odds with the natural sleep/wake rhythm!).
Thanks for both of your responses.
Someone at a local store was recommending the WAC Charge with a replaceable bulb -- I'm worried with such a small fixture it wouldn't really be able to give much more than the spotlight effect? But it seems like there are wide-flood MR16-style lights (at least that go to 60 degrees?) It's hard to see the effect in a lighting store. The fixtures themselves do look a lot more elegant in my opinion than some of the universal ones which can hold an e26 lamp...
re: dimming -- is the benefit with integrated LED compatibility with more dimmer switches?
These aren’t recessed. They’re surface mount made to look like recessed. Personally I prefer Halo SMDs for WAC ROUND fixtures. They look cleaner.

I would start with something like this (amazon link), compatible track, and a DIY pendant with long enough cord, and cord wrappers to "shorten" the leads as need be (might be something to 3D print if that is your bag). Or make an assortment of heights for the situations.
Hi Everyone,
Looking to replace the lighting underneath my cabinets in the kitchen. I didn't install these and don't know what they are.
Kind of looks like these ones from amazon:
But the metal connectors are bent backwards on the bulbs I removed, so not sure if the Amazon bulbs I found are right. I have tried googling bulb types and can't see anything that looks similar to the ones I have.
I agree with the other commentor. Replace with line voltage Type B ballast bypass LED lamps. Be sure they're the double ended variety so that you don't have to worry about the socket/tombstone configuration. LED manufacturers don't make T12 lamps, only T8 and T5. The T8 lamps will have same pin spacing as the existing T12. The ballast bypass is super easy and anyone can do it. There are tons of videos online to help you along the way.
Here's an inexpensive set of (4) from Amazon to get you started on your path. By the way, these will save you some money on your monthly utility bill.
I have no idea. All I know is the amazon link which is this.
So far I've got 3 completely different answers from 3 different people. I've never been more confused about something in my life because no one will give me the same answers, I keep getting completely different answers.
So I read that 5mm red LEDs (amazon choice ones) are 2.2v. I assume that changes everything you said?
This listing. There's an image in the photoset that says the minimum forward voltage is 2.0 and the max is 2.2, so 1.5 seems to not even be part of the equation.
Ahh - thanks - its my first time posting here - I realize how my request was pretty wide open.

I was thinking something along these lines: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LXWNSYN/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=AB7N2KJ4KAXC3&psc=1
but hardwired instead of plug in - nothing too big; and would work in a craftsman style house.
I'm thinking about installing those 100w projectors, do you think It would be better than cob light or the sansi 27w?
the lights are already running from dusk till dawn automatically. Nobody who would be bothered by extremely bright lights.
It's a carport of my condo in Montreal in a working class neigborhood, too close to a bar and people sometime hide there to do drugs or take a piss...
Can’t tell if they’re rounded or rectangular, but something like this would do

So in layman's terms, what size would I need?
I already linked the bulbs I am using. 4W each, three of them, so 12W total at 100%
I am pretty sure I have this Lutron dimmer but it might not be that exact model. Almost 100% sure it's made by Lutron and works with LEDs.
Just did a quick Google search and it looks like all of the ones sold at common stores require a decora-style wallplate. Do you know of any that fit a traditional flip switch plate? We have this nice wallpaper-covered plate that would be nice to reuse... I believe I have this exact unit - if not, it's a similar one from Leviton. I bought one brand, it didn't work at all so I got the other.
I have a thread in /r/askanelectrician about the issue where I was told I needed a newer dimmer that supported LEDs. The existing one was from the mid 90s and wouldn't power the bulbs beyond about 10% their max brightness unless I put an incandescent in the circuit.
Not sure why nobody has recommended this yet, but all you would need is an ELV smart dimmer to control these, assuming it’s all fixtures with ELV drivers on the switch leg.

They probably put a projector behind the monitors and aimed it upwards towards the wall.
Thanks for the reply but I don’t see anything from those vendors that are similar to this
I forgot to mention they are 6 inch openings
You could add a false bottom (1/4 inch plywood) to the entire niche, paint it exactly the same color as the wall and frame and hide the batteries behind wall. If you are handy you could solder extra batteries in parallel to reduce the times you up need to replace them.
If the remote is Infrared (IR) you will need a small hole positioned properly to let the IR light from the remote to access the battery/control box.

I've thought about using a reflector bulb or some other bulb replacement, but the light stays on 24/7 so I was concerned it would burn out rather quickly if it wasn't a high efficiency model. We've also got these little windows above our front door that let light in from the hallway (which is nice in the daytime since we have a skylight in the hallway but kinda weird at night as this bulb shines into our home).
By using a shade, I can diffuse the light or direct it downward and keep the majority of the light from shining into my house. Also it would be less ugly, which would be great. I'm looking into attaching this with magnets right now, but it wouldn't do much to mitigate the light going into my house.
Haha yeah I've looked into those, but I'd really like it to look intentional and not sideways. Right now I've been considering something like this, and gluing magnets to the base to it stays secure against the fixture. What do you think of that?
Hi Liam! It's likely this, and it's in the hallway outside my apartment rather than in my apartment proper. To be honest, my management has been not so proactive about solving issues in our building. We've got a leaky roof, a squirrel living in the wall for a month, and mold in the basement. So I was going to try and be proactive and just do a quick fix myself like putting a shade over it.
I thought perhaps I could use something like this, maybe affix a few magnets to the glove, and just pop it over the bulb. That way I've given it a softer glow but not actually installed anything permanently.
Not a timer but they do sell light-sensitive attachments that go directly in the socket. Turns the light on when it’s dark and off when it’s bright outside.

You aren't going to get high lumens + high CRI for cheap. Typically the higher CRI the lower lumens. It's a trade off.
Same with hung but cheaper.

I promise that all you need is ~like~ this light. The guy in the video is proud of his obsession over P E R F E C T studio lighting. As a light guy, I get it. But unless you opt to permanently convert that bedroom into a legitimate studio or plan to build one, get a light like I linked and just angle all the light towards the easel side of the room. (and wear a white shirt if you want)
