Isnt it amazing? I got it off amazon, slightly pricey butt (hehe) honestly it was worth it :) it’s quality is very good in my opinion. Sadly they don’t have more colors but they said they were working on it
Hahaha, yes.... dont look at them wrong, dont breathe wrong when sowing seeds, and dont take it personally if you lose a few... its heartbreaking, but also how we learn!!!
Here's a quick Amazon link for pumice
Here's an example of horticultural sand
The links are just examples, I found my pumice and sand at my local nursery but some people use concrete sand too... there's a guy on the YouTube i think he's in Canada, and i think his channel is just called lithops, he has quite a few videos on his setup, he talks about his media too... I might be wrong, but I swear he said he was in Canada... and I'm sure there are people on here who will have much better advice than me!!!!
It’s from Amazon and it DOES say +1 live seedling but I didn’t realize it!!! I was going to use my own set up for germination but I liked what they had with it! We’ll see how the seeds do!

This store has very good reviews and a decent selection of butts.
And then if i can remember correctly planetdesert have a few as well but I think its mostly the same as leaf & clay
The one that they’re under is a grow bulb maybe 4 inches above them.

If you have access to Amazon, I have purchase coarse sand there. It's sometimes listed as "vase filler". Make sure it's coarse river sand, as you don't want the concern with residual salts from beach sand. I made that mistake long ago and didn't have a single plant survive when I used that.
Edit: Here's a link to some I've used.
Thanks for the sterilization tip, and the link. I shall investigate it fully. I got my seeds from amazon... these ones... are they alright? This is my first time trying to grow from seed...
Thank you 😊
I bought it from amazon . Got the pack of six mixed pack, they’re all really lovely and perfect for lithops!
They’re currently under this light. It’s so strange because it’s super bright, but in pictures it turns out yellowish looking. My plants love it though!

Would you also recommend pumice? Or this
I got it on Amazon. It came in a pack of four... The other colors are super cute! I'm saving the other colors for different plants I have in mind, though. :) Here's the link! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R5LF733/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_bPbZEb6W8FC4T
I got them from here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CKWZCPR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_jLxMBb2F4AQMR
It had really good reviews and they exceeded my expectations. Super happy and would totally order again.
For mature¹ plants cultivated indoors....I water at the substrate surface level, never over the leaves.
I use a squeeze-bottle like this and apply the water evenly all around the surface until it just starts to run out of the drainage holes.

The bulk of the root mass on lithops (and a majority of succulents) are broad and shallow. Even though lithops have a relatively long taproot, the structures responsible for moisture uptake are located more closely toward the leaves.
Imagine an ice cream cone shape. The roots spread is more broad toward the top. The taproot extends down the length. And the leaves sit on top like a cone holds the ice cream.
▪︎▪︎▪︎
This this video, Evans talks about how she waters. But keep in mind, her plants are outdoors but still, water is applied from the top.
••••••
¹ For seedling cultivation, I use a fine-mist spray bottle.
To address the leaf browning issue....it could be rot that has infected the plant. It could be mechanical trauma to the leaf. It's difficult to say.
There is a chance that it could stop at this point or continue to advance. Sometimes plants take care of themselves and will isolate an infection.
A stop-gap measure....sprinkle on a little bit of baking cinnamon powder on the spot. It acts like an antibacterial.
Or....if you happen to have some sulfur powder on hand (but I'm guessing you don't) you can brush a little bit on the site. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HA95W2
Try not to let this area get wet.

To be a debbie-downer, I had a pot of three pleiospilos compactus and two rotted before I realized what was going on and with one of them, there was no overt signs of issues.
My remaining plant (now over two years in my care)....I just discovered about ten minutes ago....is popping out a new leaf pair. 🎉
Using an actual digital light meter for my lights directly underneath, the reading is ~900FC measured at approximately 8-inches. On my phone light meter app, it measures around 650FC. This level is enough to stimulate blooming.
This is the phone app I use, using the front-facing camera.... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doggoapps.luxlight
Thank you for saying that! Todays been a rough day for me. Your comment went a long way thank you 💖💖
Ok great! This is very good to know. I do have 3 of these lights currently But I can’t attest to how well they work because I didn’t end up having to use them last year. I did hook all 3 up and from my phone app, which is definitely not that accurate, I get about ~1600Lux on average where my lithops are currently. May I ask, do you know what a good range of Lux is for lithops? I don’t just want them to survive either, I’d like them to be happy and flourish! Thank you in advance so much 🙏
To add: I saw a YTber use this for her plant water. No idea of her location or why the need rather than using tap. I've thought about an RO system but I'm not too keen on having to plumb it in.
And for this, trying to set up an easy by-pass on my kitchen sink plumbing....not too sure about that either.
If I see something happen with the fissure...but no obvious changes occur in what I consider a reasonable amount of time, I go ahead a water lightly until it's revealed what is exactly happening.
I use a squeeze wash-bottle like this to apply the water. I make a little circle around the plant at the substrate level. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08BNHSFW6/
And if I'm being overly paranoid, I measure the water like this... https://www.instagram.com/p/Ceel-x1pRSC/ ..... I place the pot on the scale and water keeping an eye on the weight.
For the pot in the picture, I typically give the whole pot about 20ml of water.
Thanks! I have them growing indoors using these lights. We keep it around 74f inside with the lithops up high, so it is probably a bit warmer.
Your grow-light link isn't formatted properly for reddit (so it got rejected) but I figured it out. I'm just smart like that. 😎 😁
Here is a reddit-friendly link for anyone else who might come across this post: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B084L1Y7KR/
Anyway, a friend whom I consider to be a premier lithops grower uses these...SANlight LED Module S2W. But then they cost an arm and a leg more than mine. 😆 It’s no longer in stock but at least you can glean some data from the site. The distance to the lamps varies but for this watts/PAR/etc it's usually between 15–30 cm / 6–12 inches for his setup.
Succulent mix yes, but really...just fractionally...by volume 5 to 10% max.
Try for the smallest size pumice you can afford. Not sure where you are located but this is what I like via Amazon. I also use it as the top-dressing.
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B06XP36YCM/
Sharp sand, I bought this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/SAKRETE-0-5-cu-ft-Step-2-Paver-Leveling-Sand-40100316/205153035
I use a grow-light year round and I live in Texas.
The grow-space for my lithops is on the shade-side of an east-facing window which is okay for temperature moderation but not nearly enough to hold etiolation at bay.
Heat can be an issue close to windows and with grow-lights. A lot of growers place a small dedicated fan (like 3.5-inch-ish size) to help facilitate air movement and mitigate heat build-up. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B09PMHX5VZ/

I've been fortunate to travel to both places I mentioned. 🌎🌏🌍
Would something like this be okay?
Boniosz 2.5lb Bonsai Succulent and Cactus Soil Gritty Mix Rocks Faster Draining Optimized PH No Root Rot
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08RB5MN7H/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_RBWQHYACQGJPRWQ1P6Z7
So I'm guessing (too lazy to look it up) you are inland, not in one of the coastal enclaves that have chronic late morning fog until noon or 1 o'clock.
Anyway...lithops can be addictive once the bug bites. With that said, the bonsai mix you linked would be fine but it already has an organic component. I would choose this instead... Boon Bonsai Soil, same price and quantity .... https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0762XXHSJ/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_0H6WPRK1KET64CVE91D6
The mix itself works fine. Serious growers might chime in about pH, etc that the various materials can add to the pot. But the composition isn't totally necessary for the hobby grower...IMO.
I personally prefer the smaller 1/8-inch size...small roots, small particle size and would prioritize that.
If I could only purchase one item, I would select 1/8-inch 100% pumice mixed with well-sifted succulent mix over the aggregate combos like the bonsai/succulent mix.
I purchased this.... 3 Gallon Bag Garden Pumice (1/8" Stone) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B06XP36YCM/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_JQT2K59J0ZK8VM5A11RQ
You can also use it for your succulents as a top-dressing. I think the size is perfect and would work if you decide to try seeds. You might have to pick through it a little and I always rinse a big batch (to remove dust and fines that could clog the root system) and have it ready to use as needed.
It's costs a little more but it's 12 quarts of product vs 1.25 quarts.
I read both your responses. I'm sorry for not including the proper information in my original post! I am in Zone 10b. I have only north-facing windows so no direct sun. I purchased these Lithops at Armstrong Garden Center. I am an intermediate gardener. I have some succulents. I've been lurking on this sub for about a year (another account I deleted because someone was stalking me).
I searched for your soil on Amazon and came up with this. Is this ok, mixed with a little potting mix and sand? The local garden stores have nothing like this:
Succulent & Cactus Soil Mix - Premium Pre-Mixed Fast Draining Blend (1.25 Dry Quarts) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073Z5JFSZ/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_PVXKSB063YP5NSWVNC7J?psc=1
Thank you for your help.
Lol sorry 😂
Mine are a mixture of the two substrates I mentioned (Bonsai Jack, LECA and a regular succulent soil from Lowes. Depending on the particular plant the ratios used change quite a bit. I find some need more or less water retention. But the real trick is investing in a good grow light. Everything started looking good once I did that.
LED Grow Light, VIPARSPECTRA P600 LEDs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088KK88NH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Q46KSDDYQ6EVHNJE9QKG
If this was my pot....I'd wait until it's time to water to repot. All the rest of the plants look pretty good.
But! Depending on where you live, the current substrate could do just fine if your typical environment has low humidity, is consistently warm, has very good air movement, and you have optimal light for your plants. All of these factors will help with the substrate drying out in a timely manner.
But because a lot of growers don't know how to adjust when one of the above elements changes, having a fast-draining substrate helps to mitigate the chance of over-watering.
About the one plant that died....don't freak out about it. It happens...and it might happen again. It happens to all of us.
The new mix, if you have access to Amazon and you have money to spare, purchase some pumice. It's my preference. Perlite works but I don't like how floaty it is plus it breaks down over time.
This works out to a little over $2US a quart for 1/8 size so it's a good value. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B095J3ZWCX/ Three gallons may seem like a lot but you can use this for succulents, etc.
New mix by volume: 10% sifted organic. 30% coarse sand. 60% pumice/perlite. If the gravel is small enough, you can use it for top-dressing.
Cotyledons when being shed can perform just like mature plants when splitting. The new leaves can also break out from the base of the cotyledon so you might see a "rupture" in the sidewall, substrate level.
My two precocious pots....the splits are not pretty and textbook for the most part, but I'll take it.

I don't know much about silica sand but it might be too fine or have additives. You want a coarse natural sand from a fresh water resource that has not been exposed to salts. I have had good luck with the sand at the following link, but anything like this would work.

After the flower dies, you can repot it. The bloom is very short-lived. Maybe a week at the most.
What is the diameter of the pot?
Cactus Mix or Cactus Succulent Mix...two different things....is still too organic for lithops. One...lithops live in very poor nutrient soil. Secondly, organic material tends to retain more moisture than what lithops and related plants like. It's very easy to overwater especially cultivating them indoors. Commercial growers can use peat moss mixes (like in your picture) as their growing conditions facilitate this....outside, heat, light, constant air movement, etc. In fact, they need little better moisture retention due to their growing conditions.
Your lowest cost of entry for inorganic material would be perlite mixed in at 3 or 4 of perlite to 1 of cactus mix by volume. I'm not a fan of perlite because it's very light and floaty. My preference is pumice as my inorganic mix-in.
This is the pumice I purchased via Amazon. I'm crazy enough to sift out the smaller sizes for the lithops. I use the larger size for other plants that have larger root structures. I use a slotted strainer as my sifter to get the small size I want. Small roots need small-sized substrate.
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08CM6TSPP/
No idea where you are located but I'm in Texas so I don't know what materials are available to you. Or if you know your way around a kitchen. 😁 •

I like to give freshly re-potted guys some rooting powder (example). To help them acclimate to new substrate. Having them separated is good too so you can give individual care.

This is the light I use for my lithops and succulents (and have used for cannabis with success, also). You could get away with a cheaper/lower wattage light, but this works well in the winter when my plants have ZERO sun exposure. I definitely recommend going with LED, lower electricity usage and heat output.

They have 3 different light color settings. I keep them under the warm yellow setting. My lithops were just chilling before I got the lights, but about 2 weeks after having the lights set up 12 of them started splitting after having them for months with no changes. So they must like it! Only downside with these lights is the timer setting works for about a week and then starts to get shorter and needs to be reset.
I’ve got these for my succulent shelf and I love them! They don’t have a built in timer, so I bought a smart plug to set up the time that way.
My light...still loving it as are my plants...
I have this one purchased via Amazon/USA. I think it comes in shorter lengths but you'll have to do a search. Monios-L T5 LED Grow Light, 4FT Full Spectrum Sunlight.

I purchased this small-size pumice on Amazon:
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08CM6TSPP/
It was a compromise between size and price. While it may be a little larger than what you are looking for, it's definitely smaller pieces than the last bag I purchased.
I ordered one of the mini greenhouses on amazon (SUNNIOR 3 Pack Seed Propagator... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083D1N5VD?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) this is the link for what I got. They’re small and can easily fit on a desk or wherever most keep their plants. I used a soil and sand mix for the base of the greenhouse, then used the rocks the seed seller sent me and a fee other top rocks I had, similar to your photo, for the top of the soil. Put the seeds on that and used a water sprayer to spritz the top. I spritzed them everyday until I hit 80% germination rate. I left the top vent closed, and would take the lid off for 5 min a day to give them air until I hit 80% germination and then I started leaving the vent open up top while keeping the inside moist and would lift the lid every now and again to let them breathe. Worked well for me! Got lots of cute little lithops in there, about to turn 3 months old soon. The greenhouse had a much higher success rate for me than the small little container the seller sent me did. Hope this helps!
Tall lithops means they are etoliated and are reaching for more sunlight, especially for newly germinated ones. If they are unable can’t get more sun, I recommend getting a grow light! I’ve had a lot of success with these lights https://www.amazon.com/EZORKAS-Dimmable-Spectrum-Adjustable-Goosencck/dp/B086XCJ29B
We have been pals for about a month. The two potted photos are the most recent and the other two are how he looked in the past. Poking around this forum has taught me a lot about how to care for these guys, but I'm not sure what I'm doing in a couple of areas.
I made the mistake of trimming up his tap root. When I cleaned him up in some nice non organic soil I noticed that his root was very brown and dry like I had seen in some posts. I gave him water therapy for a week, but I'm not sure if that was a good idea.
I don't know how long they should be getting light for, at what intensity, and from what distance. This is the light that I'm working with: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MV2GF84?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Ok so, this vintage bird cage can be an alternative. The decorative parts are basically what my metal ventilation looks like in my antique case that I was attempting to describe.
