Getting Xavier Woods was an awesome and unexpected get, kudos to whoever booked him.
I spend most of mag doing tournaments, and this was by far the best organized they have ever been. Challonge brackets meant I could see how long I had until I played again. Tournament Organizers had mics so we could hear them. Tournament sign ups always starting 6 hours prior kept things fair and consistent. Projecting the main TV so everyone could see made waiting more bearable, with more setups meaning the waits were less long. And giving smash so many tournaments because lord knows the one tournament Mag normally hosts fills up in 20 seconds was greatly appreciated. I really hope it all becomes the new standard, it was great.
Using the lobby bar as an additional stage was a great idea. I only caught Triforce Quartet but I loved it. If there’s time and space, id love to see more bands do multiple shows. Makes figuring out my schedule much easier.
Rock Island was laid out really cool, but I think it needs to be labeled better. I didn’t know it was a thing until Sunday. The word MERCH or SHOP really should have been part of the projection on the concert wall.
My only real suggestion for next year would be hand sanitizer stations to cut back on the spread of MagPlague. Like a couple of these things around the arcade/consoles: https://www.amazon.com/PURELL-2423DS-Touch-Free-Dispenser-Silver/dp/B004E2MCHY
I'm not too keen on the idea of a lottery system.
PAX has the exact same problem with their badges: a lot more people want to attend than there are badges available. No matter what, there will always be plenty of unhappy people. The PAX organizers have already looked at many different options for how to sell badges as fairly as possible, and they've come to the conclusion that a free-for-all with no advance notice, despite its flaws, is the best option.
In a way, a free-for-all, no-advance-notice system is already like a lottery: you have to be in the right place at the right time.
ADDENDUM: Also, you've seen how pissed people have gotten after bad server RNG forced them pay an extra $10 or $20 for their MAGFest badge. It'll be much, much worse if bad RNG prevents somebody from staying at the Gaylord.
I see a decent amount around within lyft/uber/taxi distance. Not ideal but, you know, it's something?
Sorry =/
I don't have a page for myself, nor did I make it myself - I commissioned it from this wonderful person over here.
As for the process of making it:
Oh yeah, I have a real VPN though Private Internet Access. I can't usually use it to stream on Netflix or Amazon Prime or Hulu, but it's good security. Good to know youtube doesn't block VPNs like that.
Dude! I just lost my mind. Chris Kohler from wired, the man who wrote Power-Up was on that documentary!! I've listen to him on so many podcasts through the years. That is insane! He's at the 21 minute mark.
