He is talking about Breakfree CLP. CLP stands for Cleaner, Lubricant, Preservative. It is an all-in-one gun oil.

Wear some layers and hold it tight to the meaty part of your shoulder (not your collarbone), and it's not bad at all.
If you are wearing thin clothes and/or holding the stock in the wrong spot and/or holding it loosely because you're anticipating the recoil, you're going to have a bad time.
Also, if it's still a bit much, this made a significant difference for me:
I got this one off of amazon.
It does add a little bit of length but not noticeably because it replaces the metal plate.

Allen Buttstock Shell Holder and Pouch for Rifles
This is the one I bought 5 or 6 years ago and it's great. The cheek rest part is a kind of neoprene that really gives you a good hold and it fits great. Zipper pocket. Super cheap. Winner all day. Got it on Amazon. Allen Buttstock Shell Holder and Pouch for Rifles https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00162JKH0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_osf.AbJAS82A7
Back when Gun shows were a thing (pre-Rona) I found a Mosin stand where I bought a reproduction of the original cleaning kits that had the brush. I found one for you on Amazon; although, I don’t know how effective it is to use. Good luck.
TACFUN Mosin Nagant Cleaning Kit/Cleaning Tools with Pouch LR 7.62x54R, Includes: Mosin Nagant Tool, Brush, Jag, Cleaning Rod Attachment, End Cap for Rod, Pouch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VPWI3G0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Z4tgFbJGPEHKS
Edit: Don’t use firing pin depth gauges that aren’t measured correctly, the one from my reproduction kit, and an eBay one I bought to replace it weren’t “in spec” at all. That can be dangerous.
Okay, sorry for the delay, was super busy.
Got this shirt in today from Teespring.com, took a total of 2 weeks to get to me. Unfortunately it's out of stock right now, but if enough people reserve one they will print more of them.
Warning: The quality of the shirt is actually pretty good, but they run a little small. So just be aware.
Edit: The big color design is on the back of the tee-shirt. The front is plain black and has a smaller design on it. Like so

This kit is sold to convert a regular 91/30 into a sniper variant:
Supposedly this comes with everything you need. I have heard mixed reviews on this kit however.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08FX7C795/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_B5O9FbA29CKK0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
These are good. I have some .303 ones that dont quite eject right but they still load nice and look good
Up under the rear sight there is a small dovetail. It took some effort because the rust and cosmoline had the sight glued to the gun. A little heat helps. I bought these mounts on Amazon: Leapers Accushot 1-Pc Mount, Dovetail, for 1" Rings https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001BR4TJY/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_HeaLxb4MD9V6P And the mount slip right on. It's solid milled aluminium and really sturdy. I haven't lost zero yet a month later.
Yeah most of the PU snipers you see out there were refurbished in the 1950's & 60's. It is extremely rare to find an original unmolested PU sniper, as most of those would have been either destroyed in the war or repaired. IMO, these refurbs are still authentic sniper rifles. Your opinion might vary from mine. They used to be $400ea when they were first imported back in the day which seems like they must be fake, but you also have to remember that a standard 91/30 Mosin was being sold for $30ea if you bought in case quantities and were willing to pay the high shipping costs. Yes, the shipping was often as expensive as the actual crate full of 20x - 91/30 Mosins. So that one PU sniper was worth about as much as 13 Mosins. At least, that is how I look at the pricing in my head. These refurb PU snipers go for around $1200+ these days. Which seems fair since a standard 91/30 seems to go for around $350+ now.
There's quite a bit of information out there on how to authenticate your PU sniper so I recommend you check that info out. Make sure the electropenciling serial numbers match up (they usually force match the scope and mount to the rifle S/N during the refurb process), and that the PU scope itself passes the sniff test since there are a lot of repro scope out there. Pay close attention to the scope turret stops as that can be an indication your scope is a repro if they are missing (not guaranteed, but something to look out for). If you are sincerely worried about it you can invest in this book and educate yourself some more: https://www.amazon.com/Mosin-Nagant-Rifle-6th-collectors-only/dp/1882391217
I have only ever seen one authentic PE sniper sold at RIA I think, and it went for big bucks. Most every PE sniper you find is a repro as the OP is warning you about above.
Something cheap and Chinese from Amazon. It’s a 2-7x32 with long eye relief.

That specific one isn’t available anymore, but I imagine some other company is selling the same scopes from the same factory under a different brand name.
Wouldn’t carry it into battle, but it holds zero and allows me to feel comfortable with shots out to around 200 yards on game.
here is the amazon listing I bought it from, the leather and metal could probably use a bit of care, but aside from that it's in usable condition as far as I can tell

Honestly the bipod is kinda shitty. It's just an sks bipod with a picatinny mount. It works for now until I get something better.
A guy on this thread actually found some on Amazon that were cheap and shipped from the US. They still had a few in stock last time I checked.
Cheap after market one: https://www.amazon.com/Mosin-Nagant-Polish-Front-Adjusting/dp/B072TQW469/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?crid=2Z3EE1906HRC7&keywords=mosin+sight+tool&qid=1663162338&sprefix=mosin+sight+tool%2Caps%2C220&sr=8-7
Although the cheap one will do just the same, the $60 authentic one would be at my door as soon as the 20th of September.
Buy some https://www.amazon.com/J-B-Non-Embedding-Bore-Cleaning-Compound/dp/B0018L9UOW#customerReviews use a lot of it and it will make your barrel cleaner and you will get a better idea. It looks decent though.
Buy a metric thread pitch gauge on Amazon.

Thus covers everything you could possibly need. It's probably metric but I am not 100% sure. Plus you can use these forever to find any odd sized bolt.
To be honest, I was very surprised that I hadn’t seen anyone do this before. This just seemed like a very easy way to get the job done.
What’s crazy to me is that people have literally gone as far as to add jb-weld to the front sight to increase the height.
This method does have its limitations though of course. You can only drop the sight so much before the adjustment slighter gets too high in the sights.
I just measured and I had a total thickness of 1.16mm of washers.
Here is the kit I used.
Hello,
Regards.
They were taught to keep their rifles clean and battle ready like any other soldier. They were issued cleaning kits and oilers that contained solvents and grease or special winter oil. Did some troops improvise methods to clean, I'm sure they did. Did they pee down their bores to clean them...there were millions of troops so I'm not saying one or two didn't get curious and try, but probably not.
This book is a great reference
https://www.amazon.com/Official-Soviet-Mosin-Nagant-Rifle-Manual/dp/158160081X
Personally I have this one it's a bit pricy but worth it. The bore cleaner and oil come extra naturally.
The bolt is all stainless. I'm not absolutely sure why but I imagine it's because there are camming surfaces that would get worn off quickly. Shine it up if you want. This stuff is excellent.
The cheek riser needed for tall boi scope: https://www.amazon.com/Louisville-Ladder-FE3240-Fiberglass-Extension/dp/B000KL2ZO8/ref=sr\_1\_10?dchild=1&keywords=50ft+ladder&qid=1633330258&sr=8-10
I don't shoot 30-06, but I do shoot 308 and .303. If you're comfortable with similar full power .30 caliber rounds, you'll be fine. I've got this pad on my M53.
Unfortunately, the reality of recoil is that it's rather hard to get rid of, or reduce significantly unless you either make the gun super heavy or include some sort of shock absorber system that just doesn't really exist. My advice? Just keep on shooting and shoulder the rifle more in the crook of your shoulder, and less on your collarbone. I've only been able to start shooting a decent amount, and I've found that the position of the butt really changes how the rifle impacts you.
Ignore everyone else telling you to man up. Gun Reddit can be toxic, and is full of bullies that think rudeness is just a joke. Have fun shooting!
I picked up one of these for my mosin but also use it with my sks and k98
Helps with the recoil on the mosin so I don't have a bruised shoulder and can shoot more rounds. As for the other rifles I find it gives me a better trigger pull length.
This thing worked very well for me:

Thank you very much for noticing ;)
It should be pretty flush but just backing out the pin till it's flush isn't the best fix. I really recommend getting the mosin tool that'll show you how much the firing pin should stick out and for which model.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VPWI3G0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_5QWF2BHTKSPMX089A77B
Here's a kit that has it. It's the thing that looks like a bottle opener/key ring.
I got my new production ones on amazon and they work great and I've had them for a few years now. I bought some "real" ones on ebay and they were complete shit half wouldn't even hold a round in the others wouldn't feed.

these are the ones I use
Howdy! Scout scopes are cool options that can be installed on a type 53 Mosin Nagant without permanently modifying the rifle! Here is a great, affordable option for your Type 53:
https://www.amazon.com/Sports-Mosin-Nagant-Scope-Mount/dp/B000R7872Y
If you would like a longer rail, this could be a good option:
Hope this helps, God bless!
Yes, that's what I've heard. Something like this would help a lot. https://www.amazon.com/Allen-Knit-Sock-Silicone-Treated/dp/B01MG29K89
Or just leave it hanging on two nails in the wall, my grandpa did that with a 22 he bought in the 1930s from a Sears catalog and.. well it was rusty but it survived heh
Here is the link, the options are for all different types of guns, I believe I chose medium but as I said small likely would be a more snug fit if you wanted it just for the mosin. pachymyr
Something like this
When I'm shooting milsurps all day, I don't like to slip anything on to the rifles, I use a recoil pad that you wear and can slip on and off.
I use this here: https://www.amazon.com/Caldwell-Plus-Recoil-Shield-Ambidextrous/dp/B0013R8J48/
577 450 normally leaves my shoulder/collarbone in a pulp, but with this pad I hardly feel anything.
This is what I use. Cheap, effective, requires no gunsmithing and an easy 1:1 swap that is completely reversible. I do recommend freezing the pad overnight and drilling out the web in the holes. It does soften the pad a bit. YMMV
Thanks! Here is a link to it on Amazon.

Yes! I forgot to the mention that I have only shot it sitting down on the bench. I will most definitely shoot it standing up next time.
A good one will make a pretty significant difference and they're not terribly expensive.
I recommend Limbsaver recoil pads if you're going to go that route. I've used them on 12 gauge shotguns in the past and the difference is definitely noticeable.
its available on amazon, i have a hard copy version but i can take and send you photos if needed. came with my '44 izhvesk pu sniper. thr sniper version has all the regular mosin nagant stuff in it, plus lots of weird cool historical stuff in it, like targeting paratroopers, ranging, estimating speed, and holdover for bombers and fighter planes (not kidding about that), and info on using other equipment like an issued periscope and standards for qualifying probpems with the pu sniper rifle.
its pretty damn cool.
I've had good luck with these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017HP9GL4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Have even shot surplus steel core at them and they've held up. But I never hang them closer than 100 yards. Any closer and I switch to self-healing targets.
I use an $8 butt pad with my M44. Smells a bit odd when you first get it. I soaked it in vinegar overnight to lose the smell. Other than that, works great. https://www.amazon.com/Mosin-Nagant-Rubber-Butt-Pad/dp/B010Q60LSI
So far as ammo goes, prices have gone through the roof over the past year. Guess the Ukrainians and Russians have stopped exporting all those cached tins they've dug up, and are now shooting at each other with it instead. Milsurp is essentially going for the same price per round as newly manufactured stuff, around 40 to 50 cents per round.
If you reload, $300 sounds about right for a startup cost: Lee Classic Turret Press and dies will put you around $240, and you'll still need all the components for the rounds your produce. I dig reloading myself...it's fun and it's relaxing. But it's not an easy task...lots of setup, attention to detail, and lots of cleanup (at least if you're married). So it's probably not worth it to low volume shooters. If you're only shooting a few hundred rounds per year, just hitch up your pants, pay prevailing market prices, and hope the prices drop again someday.
So far as other mods, take it slowly. Take the rifle out as is and throw some rounds downrange. There is something really appealing about having a firearm that both shoots well and is a great piece of history. The rifle will grow on you after you take it out a few times, and you may decide you love it as is. Once you start grinding and drilling, there's no going back...the historical flavor is gone. Try working with the iron sights before you start changing things up.
Of course, hell I can send you some if you buy the scope + rail
As for price, I bought it for about 75$ is 50+ship fair? The scope is Hammers Long Eye Relief Pistol Scout Scope 2-7X32 with weaver rings https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0081LT88A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_N1tEybWVJJZ12
I also have an ATI Monte Carlo stock for sale if you want
If you have access to a steamer, that's what helped me get all the cracks and crevices in the metal parts really clean & really a good investment if you plan on buying several milsurps in the future. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005SI8YZC/ That's the one I bought. Also, Simple Green does a pretty good job of getting cosmoline off. The good thing about cleaning the 91/30s are there aren't too many parts
They also make pads that just slide over the back, so you can take it on and off whenever you want. The one I got was made out if really nice rubber that feels great. But they are a little more expensive. Considering you spent $30 for the actual rifle, it would be a little weird spending almost that much on a butt pad lol
I think this is what I got, but it may be a different brand https://www.amazon.com/LimbSaver-Slip-On-Recoil-Pad/dp/B01IJUPLTC
I bought this recoil pad, the price was great and it works well. I bought it more because I needed a longer buttstock but it is nice to lessen the sharp recoil.
note you can drill out the holes to let it be even a bit more squishy.
Lots of good polishes listed already, but my go-to for metal polishing is Wenol. I like to use an old cotton t-shirt as the polishing rag. Lots of elbow grease and patience. I've tried lots of polishes, but Wenol might be my favorite for metal work.
Edit: I would start by polishing with 0000 steel wool first, then moving on to the Wenol, if a smooth, semi-mirror-like finish is desired.
They are sold out. I bought similar items on Amazon, but it was for more expensive there.
I have yet to find a decent toolpack, however. I use the bayonet as a screwdriver, but I don't need tools for much else.
Try this stuff, it breaks down cosmoline and carbon build up fast. Just make sure you don't leave it on for too long.
Slip2000 725 Gun Cleaner Trigger Spray, 16-Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0064VRRAU/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_ms8uxbN85QSG5
hey I bought this cleaning kit http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FKUL4E?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
But unfortunately I didn't read the reviews first and didn't realize it was for a m44 and also alot of people said the firing pin depth gauge sizes are all wrong, is there a place that has all the dimensions of the correct firing pin tools measurements so I can see if they are correct?
I've been running the Brassstacker on my 91/30 with the NC Star scope mentioned in the other post for years. Always held zero, glass left a little to be desired, especially after shooting such nicer scopes on my other rifles.
Upgraded to this because i wanted something better, and this fit the bill. Coupled with Zee Signature rings with the POS Alignment which lets me use ring inserts go achieve more adjustment due to the nature of the Brassstacker mounting.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BJXM0KK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Here is one that I got that has worked fine so far.
I was looking at that one and this one: http://www.amazon.com/Remington-Trigger-Block-Keyed-alike/dp/B006QP65ZC/ref=sr_1_1?s=sports-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1433351893&sr=1-1&keywords=trigger+lock. I guess I should take my gun to the gun store and see if I can test out trigger locks
Easiest way is to use a tool like this:
Still will take elbow grease
I have the field gauge from this set. It's pretty easy to use since you don't need to take out the extractor.
Liberytreecollectors.com has some M91 bayonets in stock. I'm going to try to get one later once I start getting paid. They're not cheap though. You can also get an M91 cleaning rod from them. I'm guessing you already know all of this though. Good luck with the sling, that might be hard to find.
