Báyìí is actually a contraction of 2 words: Bí (like) + Èyí (this)
It can be used in the sense of "like this" or "now" - it meaning "now" is similar to how in English the "here" in "from here on out" means "now"

Báyìí la ṣe ń fọnu wa láàárọ̀ kùtùkùtù - This is how we brush our teeth early in the morning
Báyìí ni mo ṣe bẹ̀rẹ̀ ìgbésí ayé tuntun - This is how I started a new lifestyle
Báyìí ni mo délé - This is how I got home
Ibi báyìí-báyìí ni a máa dó sí - We will encamp at such and such a place
Nípa báyìí... - Thus...

Ní báyìí màá lọọlé - Now I'll go home
Fún mi báyìí-báyìí; àìjẹ́ bẹ́ẹ̀, màá mú un tipátipá - Give it to me now now; if not, I'll take it by force
Mo wà níwájú ilé yín báyìí-báyìí - I'm in front of your house now now
Òjò máa rọ̀ ju báyìí lọ - Rain will fall more than this / more than it is now
Ọmọ ẹgbẹ́ ti tó igba báyìí - The number of members has reached 200 now

That's a great start.

It's a mishmash of histories from various points in time, but they are a good start. My favorite book (Things Fall Apart) is at the top of the list. Even though it's a fictional story, it still provides a pretty accurate picture of Igbo culture right around when the British arrived.
Other favorites that are not pre-colonial but still good reads are "Ovonramwen Nogbaisi: A Historical play" and "The Gods are Not to Blame" both by Ola Rotimi, and "Efuru" by Flora Nwapa.
Good Luck!
Welcome to the sub, do you want me to give you a flair as a learner
My husband just finished reading this book and he highly recommends it, it’s about the (pre-)colonial history in the formation of Nigeria from the Fulani Jihad to the Amalgamation and shortly after the First World War.
There’s a couple I’ve seen. One is a two volume set. The other is a complete work. Both claim to have thousands of proverbs.
I think this keyboard will help, it's free and can be used for a variety of African languages. It's got letters like ƙ ŋ ɔ ʃ t ṯ ƭ ʈ ɵ ʊ ʋ ƴ ʒ so can be used for Hausa, Nupe, Twi and many more W. African languages. (It's called 'African Keyboard' if the link didn't work)
