The learning resource buttons are probably the cheapest to start out with, but they're hard to press and sound is pretty bad. They're quite large as well, but that's a plus for larger animals.
The Fluent Pet ones are pretty affordable, provided you buy the 18 pack (roughly $7 per button). Otherwise yeah, it's expensive. They're smaller and easier to press. Sound is still so-so. My favourite so far.
I was using the square/hexagon buttons before which had great sound quality, but they were €13 per button and it was expensive as hell. They were also very big and harder to press (even though my dog is big).
Many people switch from the learning resource buttons to the Fluent Pet ones, so eventually, it's going to cost you anyway.
Starting button training is just expensive, no way around it haha.
If you want to save up money but still start training, then you can always try training them using a substitute object that makes no sound. For example, just a small piece of round cardboard. Draw a picture or write a word on it, and then tap it every time you want to model the word. When your dog taps it as well, praise him and do the thing he wants. Of course the downside is that there's no actual sound recording, but hey - it's free!
I have suggested chargeable and bluetooth enabled buttons to CleverPet (so that you would be notified through an app that a certain button was pressed, and you could upload your own audio files instead of speaking directly into the microphone). But that's not something they're working on right now as it would be really expensive to make, and to buy.
There's some other companies trying to penetrate the market with buttons but they're pretty much all learning resources versions with a fancy new jacket (aka; still sound like shit).
These look like they're rated pretty well and will ship quickly! Keep in mind there may be a bit of a transition period when you change the buttons for the other set. If you keep the buttons in the same place and order that should help with the transition.
I can't use the default hextiles, my cat will chew on them.
I use wooden hexagon tiles instead, and use double sided velcro to attach the buttons to the tiles. This way you can still remove them. It sounds better, since it's not being muffled by a regular foam tile.
If you want to mount it up on the wall, I suggest getting a cork board or something similar, and you can attach the buttons to that instead (using velcro). There are even hexagon shaped cork boards!
I got these Stickers and they’re doing great on the fluent pet buttons.. I printed pictures for things and they haven’t faded yet after a few weeks. They’re just really small buttons so idk if a picture or words are better!
Also worth noting, ours are wall-mounted and my bernedoodle is very particular. He only does a quick nose boop to press them.. so they may not be getting as much wear as if they were on the ground.
These are the more durable buttons, but they are also very expensive: https://www.amazon.com/Talking-Tiles-Voice-Recorder-seconds/dp/B00P14ZB9K
I would say that the FluentPet buttons hold up to being used by larger breeds very well, as long as they don't get chewed on.
Yikes... I was about to buy the big set of 32, maybe I'll start small and see... I bought an eight pack of some whatever on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B094HT1XM5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1)
but my dog is very small and can't always get them to sound off so I still think the smaller ones might be better for her. She's picked them up super quickly but often hits them just not hard enough to make them play.
Was going to go all out just for cost efficiency's sake because she's only 8 months and learned all 8 buttons in about 3 weeks, after a month or two, she was twisted them around on me, like she truly knows the meaning better than you'd expect. She definitely needs a way to express herself.
Any other recommendations out there? Fluent Pet seemed to be the best all around for really teaching them to talk.
Or does anyone have experience with returns if they're really unhappy with Fluent Pet?

I got these on Amazon. I can’t remember if they’re louder but they’re bigger. Lots of people reference the “learning is fun” buttons from Amazon but those reset when you hold them down. These don’t do that, they have a switch.
I haven’t had them for too long and I use them with my cat not a dog but so far so good.
I'm pretty sure I've seen these on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09KBZ3MYP/
Fluent pet is also coming out with light-up buttons this summer that will automatically log button presses on an app.
I personally deal with this by having a webcam set on the buttons, so I can view the playback and see what my dog said when I wasn't around.
This one is great, and the button is wireless but doesn’t need batteries!

FluentPet buttons which are much smaller and are made in batches so it'll take longer.
I suggest starting out with the big cheap ones and if it's working out for you, then you can upgrade them to the smaller buttons to save space.
