Platform: PC
Year: 2010
Genre(s): FPS, Survival horror
Multiplayer: No
Why you feel it's a good choice: Metro 2033 is a very fun, nerve wrecking shooter, with nice graphics that still hold up pretty well. The price is fantastic and it would set us up for Metro Last Light down the road.
EDIT: I guess the price was 3.74 for that one day now its back up to about 7.50
Platform: PC
Year: 2004
Genre(s): Platformer, Metroidvania
Multiplayer: No
Why you feel it's a good choice: It's free all the time, can run on pretty much anything made within the last fifteen years with a functioning processor, and is a great game overall that pretty much anyone can play.
Platform: Windows, Mac, Linux
Year: 2012
Genre(s): FPS, RPG, Loot-based
Approx. Length: 85 hours with side missions - but there is a LOT more
Multiplayer: Co-op
Why you feel it's a good choice: It's raunchy, it's funny, it's exciting, it has a lot of depth, it's got great co-op (community building) and it has an unbelievable amount of things to do. Side missions, GOOD DLC, raid bosses - I've been playing this game since release and not once have I gotten bored.
Minimum Requirements: Windows XP, 2.5GHz dual core, 2GB RAM, GeForce 8500/Radon 2600
That's an excellent point.
The weekly suggestion was mostly in lieu of the Humble Daily Bundle, as I agree that purchasing a new game every week is a bit excessive.
My biggest concern with bi-weekly/monthly time periods is that people may get tired/bored, but I think you've made an excellent suggestion to mitigate that. Another option we were considering was a "layered" schedule. (i.e. we have weekly games (short), bi-weekly games (medium-length), and monthly games (long) going on simultaneously.) It would allow for the greatest variety, but would be more difficult to organize.

Why you feel it's a good choice:
Again, a visual remake of an older freeware title. Spelunky has you exploring a set of randomized caves filled with treasure, traps and enemies.
Pretty challenging, it requires you to think while also hurrying your ass up with a soft time limit in the form of a spooky ghost. If you're into that sort of stuff it's also great for speedrunning or trying to top score leaderboards with the daily challenge mode.

Why you feel it's a good choice:
Cave Story+ is a remake of the 2004 indie hit 'Cave Story' featuring new upgraded graphics and music. Easily one of my favourite indie games of all time with a well crafted story, cute characters and great gameplay. The entire thing has this sort of charm to it that made me keep playing for hours on end.
