CAVE STORY. Here's a link to the downloads, just pick the language that suits you. It's a great game, a classic indie made by one person in his spare time over the course of five years.
Edit: A lot of people are asking about this, so to clarify: this is the original version of the game. There are various paid versions floating around which are essentially remakes. You can find these on Steam, Wii, 3DS, and DSi. The steam version, Cave Story+, is probably one of the more popular versions. It includes updated graphics, difficulty levels, challenges, Curly Story, and more. None of these things are present in the original game. Oh, it also includes an updated soundtrack, but it's generally regarded as not very good. Luckily you can switch between original and updated in the settings. Anyway, if you like the free version, I'd ask you to please consider purchasing one of the many paid versions. They're usually about $10-15 USD. Support the dev, and all that.

Came here to say this. Cave Story is one of my all time favorite games. Beautiful story, solid platforming, catchy sound track and an extra challenge for those that will seek it out. The whole game was developed completely by one talented person.
Here's the unofficial website with downloads:
YES!
I'm so glad someone mentioned it :D
For anyone asking why it's $15 on Steam, that's Cave Story+. It's a remastered version with higher-res graphics, two more soundtracks to choose from, and a few more challenges (remastered and "new")
The original soundtrack option is what's played in the original Cave Story (8-bit style music, pretty damn good);
The remastered soundtrack option is the old soundtrack, but made with more "modern" instruments (drums, guitars, synths, etc. Also really good, but not as good as the original IMO)
The new sountrack is the one created for Cave Story Wii (which is pretty much CS+ on the wii). Most fans agree it's not good. Original title theme: Here; "New" title theme: Here; It's like that for all of the songs, it justs dumbs down the intense songs (which are usually the best).
If you want to play Cave Story, get the freeware original version. It's available for tons of OSes, like Windows, Mac, Linux, Raspberry Pi, PSP, someone managed to make a GameCube version, and there's more. It's $15 cheaper, and personally my favorite version (also doesn't require steam!).
If I explained more of what I like about the game, this would turn in to a skyscraper of text, so I'll just leave it at that.
EDIT: Forgot to add the songs .-.
EDIT 2: One more thing to talk about:
The soundtrack makes you feel things. Happy, sad, and unsettling things. It fits the mood of the current situation amazingly. I could talk more about it, but I don't want to give spoilers, to I'll summarize: It's fucking great and you'll love it.
If anyone hasn't played Cave Story yet: it's free, and you can download it here:
http://www.cavestory.org/download/cave-story.php
The steam version adds remastered music, some updated graphics, and more post-game content, but you won't miss out on the bulk of the game by playing the original free version.
Cave Story, La Mulana, and Spelunky are all worth playing and it's a smooth experience whether you use a keyboard or controller. All three of them saw HD remasterings, but the original, free Cave Story and Spelunky are both available on the sites I linked. La Mulana's classic version is still available on some websites as well. Honestly though, if you've got the cash then I recommend getting the remasters since they're superior experiences and do a good job of keeping with the feel of the originals.
Cave Story. It's just fun enough to play more than once.
EDIT (off mobile): You can download it for free, here! It's quite easy to install and it's an excellent game.
Might seem a bit trite, but Half-Life 2 is definitely an essential part of any PC gaming library.
On the other hand, if you're looking for something free, Cave Story is a classic.
I would recommend Cave Story. It's a neat little pixel art platformer game. The original version is free, although there is a Cave Story+ on Steam with updated graphics and a little extra content.
Cave Story is arguably one of the best games ever - the fact that it's indie is just icing on the cake.
EDIT: Key words: ARGUABLY ONE OF. I'm not implying that it's Game of the Millennium, but I definitely feel that it's up there with Super Mario World and the other legendary titles, and have spoken to many people that agree. Hell, beat the average on the bundle and judge for yourself, or download the original freeware release with fansubs.
EDIT2: The original freeware's theme song is also responsible for this amazing Fresh Prince mashup.
Cave Story! Available here!
A GREAT platformer featuring a great story, multiple endings, satisfying weapons and an awesome soundtrack that is also available on the website!
In my opinion it's one of those games that deserves full price. It doesn't have a great story but it manages to make you like the few and simple characters it has. Anyway anyone having doubts you can download the 8bit version for free to try it out http://www.cavestory.org/
link to the freeware version of Cave Story.
link to the paid version of Cave Story on the Steam storefront.
The freeware version is the full game in its entirety and is 100% adequate, the paid version just has a few extra niceties. Everyone should have some Cave Story in their lives.
Please be aware: Cave Story+ is available on Steam/PC for a price.
You can legally obtain a free copy of the original Cave Story by downloading the game + translation patch from http://www.cavestory.org/download/cave-story.php
I've read cave story is a fantastic free single player game.
Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist http://store.steampowered.com/app/409160/
^ this one was interesting. really short though, like 25-30 mins of play.. though I get the feeling there was more to do based off everything left all over the game. I didnt do that. Its made by the same guys who did Stanley Parable. Its pretty neat.
Platform: PC
Year: 2004
Genre(s): Platformer, Metroidvania
Multiplayer: No
Why you feel it's a good choice: It's free all the time, can run on pretty much anything made within the last fifteen years with a functioning processor, and is a great game overall that pretty much anyone can play.
This has been my goto game when people have asked me for good free games. There is now also a paid version with updated graphics and music as well as a new game mode iirc.
-I couldn't recommend Cave Story enough: http://www.cavestory.org/downloads_game.php (Don't forget to download the English patch)
-Any of Jason Rohrer's games.
-There are also some incredible indie games like Machinarium, Samorost, World of Goo, Minecraft etc. These aren't free, but are very cheap and very awesome.
It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I recommend Cave Story, a freeware Japanese platformer. It only takes 4-6 hours, but there's a lot of depth to the story, gameplay, characters, etc. It's known as one of the original "indie" games, if that sort of thing interests you.
I've never owned a gaming PC so I guess all my favorites are relevant. A lot of these games can be found cheap on GoG.com.
FPS
Deus Ex
Jedi Knight II
Unreal Tournament (not sure if you'll be able to run 2k3/2k4)
Quake I, II and III
Doom I and II (I know it's old, but it's still a lot of fun. Especially coop and custom wads)
Strategy/related
Total Annihilation
Heroes of Might And Magic III [Turn based]
Diablo II [hack 'n' slash]
Dark Reign (extremely underrated rts)
Point 'n' click
Indie games
Cave Story (free)
Gish
Super Crate Box (free, simple but very fun)
You could also fetch an NES/SNES/Sega Master System/Genesis/etc. emulator. There's a lot of old gems to be found.
http://www.cavestory.org/ The original version of the game is freeware so you can play through the whole thing and decide if you'd like it on the switch. Check it out for yourself to see if you enjoy it. I think Cave Story+ adds an updated soundtrack and graphics and a few new speed running levels. Even though it's one of my favorite games of all time it's hard to justify $27 when it's free on the PC
Played both original and +. Even if both were free I would still play the original because fps is different and it affects the game a bit. Also I prefer 16px tiles to 32 Download
Cave Story is a bit old, but it's considered to be a classic indie title that showed what one man could do. It's a 2D platformer/shooter/cave exploration that tries to recreate the 8-bit era of games with its (gorgeous) pixel graphics. Cave Story features the greatest level designs and story anybody will ever find. Great music too. If you haven't played it, you're missing out.
I also recommend playing without a guide for the first run, which is fairly easy, then playing with a guide for the second run, because there is a ton of content that can't be unlocked except for the extremely perceptive.
If you're looking to learn some x86, here's an excellent intro. It's probably the most straightforward, comprehensive intro guide I've found, and it's tons of fun to follow, too.
You haven't played Cave Story yet? Boy you've been missing out. It was one of the first indie games to ever make it big and it holds up great even today.
You can download the original game here for free: http://www.cavestory.org/download/cave-story.php
Or, if you'd like to support the creator, there's a remastered version with remixed music, better graphics, additional challenge levels and an entire different game mode available on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/200900/
You can make progress and save. It's not a roguelike, if you were led to believe that, it's a metroidvania game with a story. It's also great, everyone should play this game at least once. Since it was originally free (and still is, despite the enhanced paid re-releases), everyone can!
Cave Story 3D is a remake of the free PC indie game Cave Story, completely updating its graphics, remixing the soundtrack, and adding some changes to lower the difficulty, among other new features. There's also a paid remake on Steam that makes the graphics "HD" (but not completely overhauled like the 3DS version is), adds some of the newer features, includes the new soundtrack, and is much cheaper (you can wait for a Steam sale for as low as $2.50). In addition to that, there's a port of the regular old free version for sale on the eShop. Every version is the same in terms of gameplay and plot, though.
It's the general consensus that Cave Story 3D is inferior to the version with pixel graphics, with people making the arguments that it "loses its charm" or "doesn't feel right", but I think that's a load of bull, and also playing it without having ever played it before might be interesting coming from an unbiased point of view.
In my personal opinion, Cave Story is a straight-up masterpiece (though I'm sure this isn't the first time you've heard it), especially if you enjoy Metroidvania games. The gameplay and the storyline are timeless no matter how its presented. You should at the very least play the free version or the Steam version if not on the 3DS.
Second this! It's an absolutely fantastic game. Besides the art being a shining example of sprites, it has a solid story, smooth gameplay reminiscent of the 2d Metroids, ect ect... One playthough should take about four hours. I highly recommend you take the time to play through this gem!
Plus, it's free! Shareware to be precise. Download page here. Quick heads up; besides the main installer, you'll have to grab the language patch underneath.
Also, DAE lament Fire Emblem moving from sprites to realistic as greatly as I do?
Hey, I'm one of the handful of guys whose hobby is modifying the game's files.
Noxid (The guy who made Booster's Lab), has a standalone TSC editor you can find here, which would allow you to edit and overwrite the files without having to decrypt/re-encrypt, and it doesn't have all the tilesets and stuff you wouldn't need to mess with. The TSC files would get you the dialogue/inventory, but not the menu, map names or graphics. You would have to do the map names in Booster's Lab (or Cave Editor) since these are coded in the .exe file itself, the graphics using an image editing program (after you take out the coding that forces the special .pbm format and instead uses regular .bmp files), and the menu names would be changed using a hex editor or resource hacker.
Basically, we have everything you would need to edit all the strings fairly easily, if you are willing to learn to use a variety of tools to reach the locations of the scattered data.
Due note that the message box has a limit of 35 characters, and even less when a facepic is being shown. Depending on the language this might force you to add more text and therefore you will need to move around the <NOD commands which tell the game when to pause the text until the player uses a button to advance. You'll want to have them no more than every 3 lines or else the player won't be able to read them before they scroll off the page.
But uh, yeah you can hit me up I guess or ask over at this forum thread for questions regarding acheiving this momentous task. Wish you the best of luck.
Oh boy, I'm the guy to ask. I've played through all the versions of Cave Story on numerous platforms. Here's a list of the different versions. The first version I played was the DSiWare version on my DSi. When I traded my DSi in for a 3DS, I didn't do a system transfer for some reason so I repurchased the DSiWare version of Cave Story on my 3DS. When Cave Story+3DS (the eShop version) was released, the DSiWare version of Cave Story was removed from the eShop. So there are only two versions that you can buy at the moment for the 3DS - either Cave Story 3D (a retail-only game that has all the environments and characters remade into 2.5D models) or Cave Story+3DS (an eShop-only game that is like the original Cave Story+, which has some extra modes to play other than the story mode, such as time attack. Cave Story+3DS has 2D environments and characters, but there is a bit of a 3D effect, so there is a visible difference between the foreground and the background). Personally, I would go for Cave Story+3DS since it is cheaper, easier to get, and some people complain the 3D models of Cave Story 3D ruin the nostalgic feelings of the game. But Cave Story 3D is better if you've already played some of the other versions, also it has a bit of a novelty since it is hard-to-find. Copies of Cave Story 3D run for a lot of cash because it's out of print and it has a cool 3D effect on the cover of the game's box.
Why should anyone care about things like that? It's not an enjoyable game. I don't see how having one guy behind the project makes it okay for a game to suck.
Want a fantastic game made entirely by one guy? Play Cave Story.
EDIT: Seriously, play Cave Story.
He might not have been the cause of the Indie upswell post-2004, but I like to think so. Pixel was the first independent developer to put out something that could be unanimously be considered more enjoyable than most of the AAA games you found at retail. The game's client was under 1MB in size, which meant it could be sneezed onto any USB key (Even the shitty 64/128MB dongle you had lying around), or even put onto floppy disk (I used this to play on junk school computers with no USB ports).
It took me roughly over 21 hours of playtime to "complete" Cave Story, thanks to having to do multiple runs. That game was the most unexpected thing to come out that year, and had far reaching effects (Much like WoW and HL2/Valve during that time).
I agree with Cave Story. But you can find it here for free: http://www.cavestory.org/download/cave-story.php
Cave Story+ has new additions, but I've never gotten around to unlocking them all. If you're on the ropes, you could try the free version (which is essentially the full game minus extras) before going for that.
Cave Story. It's a side-scrolling shooter with metroid-like elements.
It's free here: http://www.cavestory.org/
Or there's an "enhanced" version on steam here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/200900/
Cave story was a labor of love by one guy, (and another guy for the music), so don't let the aesthetic turn you off, it's an amazing game with very fun gameplay, likeable characters, and multiple endings.
Though do note, that some of the endings require you to do some bizarre things to get them, so after your first playthrough I would recommend looking up how to get the rest of the endings.
I will say, the one and only time I beat it, I got the "bad" ending and missed like 30% of the game. I think I'll replay it soon.
> I am looking for something (an article or a book) that discusses the architecture of 2D, tile-based game engines
I know it's not an article or a book, but I am currently working through a video series called Reconstructing Cave Story, in which we rebuild Cave Story from ground up.
Cave Story is an Indie tile-based platformer, a lot like Metroid or Mega Man.
> but not the overall goals of what we're trying to accomplish.
In each episode I spend a few minutes at the beginning presenting the problem and trying to motivate why the solution I propose will solve this problem.
> Or, people who can code a tile engine from scratch, how did you get to that point?
It mostly comes to breaking the engine up into small enough parts that you can solve, which is in itself a difficult problem! Sometimes that means solving a problem, and then coming back to it and needing to change your solution. I think it requires a lot of tenacity to develop the skills, but I'm a firm believer that experience is the best teacher.
A suggestion might be to take a spoon-feeding tutorial and make something similar, but different. You'll come up with a lot of specific questions that you can ask on the gamedev forum or programming.
I don't get why I was down voted?
On the official site, you can scroll down and see that the original freeware version is on pretty much everything for free.
Not speaking for him, but I think a lot of issues with Nicalis come from the value proposition of the ports themselves. Since the base game is free, anything they add is what you are really paying for, which isn't enough for some people, which I understand.
Since this post is about + on steam, try playing any of the challenge modes. If you're on windows it will crash 100% of the time, and you will be unable to view the leaderboards without the game crashing. If you're on Mac, the game won't run at all, and has been dropped from the steam store. The base game runs fine but as the original is free that's a requirement.
> but the ports wouldn't have happened without [Nicalis]
Cave Story port list Nicalis requested development to stop on the Nintendo handheld ports (which is understandable).
Cave Story. It's amazing, and free. There's also a deluxe version available on Steam if you feel like supporting Pixel. He designed the game 100% by himself, from the engine up.
Cave Story + is a great platformer, metroidvania style game. You can get a free version, but the + version is the 'remaster'.
I don't think it will be the same, his prevous games weren't a lot like doukutsu monogatari, of course, it's visually similar since he's the on doing the sprites. It actually looks a lot more like ikachan.
Due to the endless recommendations for this game, I've been considering playing it for the last few months. This post is the final straw. Tonight, I will (finally) download and play it!
Link time! http://www.cavestory.org/downloads_game.php
If you want to give it a try the original release is a free download on PC
Cave Story+ does add a solid chunk and playing on the go is a great benefit as well, but trying the free version will a tleast let you know if you like this kind of game
You should, it's free for the original version and can be downloaded from cavestory.org. Scroll down for the Linux port.
It's a Metroidvania with some elements from Mega Man. It's one of the first successful indie games and was created entirely by one man, Daisuke Amaya.
You should, it's a great game. You can get the original version for free here but I would suggest getting the + version at some point as it improves the graphics, has a remastered soundtrack, and has new modes and challenges to enjoy.
> just to shame it's creator.
I don't think shame necessarily plays a portion in it, but it might be possible if what /u/Drakengard said about Matsuno being Sakaguchi's successor is true (I've never heard of that rumor before). Square Enix fully jumped into the phone/tablet bandwagon, which turned out to be a bubble. It's probably more accurate to say that Square Enix is willing to gut the spirit of a series to make more money.
>Is it too much for me to hope it's for the PC?
The Japanese PC game market is extremely weak. A lot of AAA companies are porting their console games to PC, but they're sadly very low quality ports (Dead Rising 3, Dark Souls, etc.) In this case I think it comes down to inexperience rather than greed. Beyond games like Cave Story and Unholy Heights there's not much indie support either. And I guess there's Sengoku Rance, but... it's not the Final Fantasy Tactics experience you're looking for. Not at all.
My own game is PC-only and I'm certainly emulating Matsuno's practices (even with a useless political science-type degree of my own!) but I just feel like it's been a lost cause. Your best bet is to wait for Western developer who grew up with the Japanese side of TRPGs (FFT, Fire Emblem, Front Mission, whatever) who is more competent than someone like me.
Cave Story, which is a 10/10 metroidvania indie game that, in my opinion, was one of the starting factors for the 8-bit craze in indie games today.
The original game currently is and always has been free - you can download it here (You'll want to get the English pre-patched game.)
For the record, Ikachan was a microgame that the Cave Story dev releaesed with Cave Story when he made it available as freeware before it got ported over to the consoles at cost. While Cave Story has appreciable upgrades, Ikachan's were significantly more minimal. The original release can be found here, and you can read about the changes made to Ikachan 3DS on the same site. If the few differences are enough to whet your whistle, then the freeware title should give you an idea of what you're in for before you buy.
Hopefully that helps.
Oh god, that's a hard choice... I'd go with Shovel Knight, purely from a practicality standpoint; you can get the non-remake of Cave Story free on PC (HERE), so you can play both games.
Content-wise, Cave Story + (the version on 3DS) just has new art, new (I'd argue worse) music, two absurdly-difficult bonus stages, and a boss rush. The core game/story mode is identical, and for most people, the original English translation is preferred over the official one.
Nethack and Cavestory Are fun games that are pretty save based though, so don't lose the saves. Also, you have to patch Cave Story to run in english. Another game by Pixel that's fun is Ikachan
Do you want more of a storyline and more varied gameplay/focus on platforming? Go with Cave Story (~7 hours).
Do you want more item progression and short-burst gamplay? Go with Steamworld Dig (~5 hours).
Cave Story is a freeware PC title, so you can download it and play some of it to see if you like the game. Steamworld Dig is somewhat akin to the game MotherLoad.
for all those that want the original fan translation for cave story plus (ie "huzzah!" instead of "oh yeah!") heres a link you might want to check out
You can replace some of the Cave Story + game files with the Aeon Genesis translation patched ones and have your "HUZZAH" back. :) Just back up your Nicalis steamapps\common\cave story+\data\base\Stage folder and copy the contents of the AGTP data\Stage folder over it. You can also add it as a mod if you don't feel like shuffling files about.
EDIT: The only thing I don't know about this method is how the new stage fits into the equation. It's possible that the modder's solution took that into account where my friend's copy-and-replace method doesn't, but I haven't tried it yet myself. I don't even know if the stage was integrated into the main game or is available from the mods folder or not. :p
Cave, motherfucking, Story! Undoubtedly one of the most phenomenal computer games ever to be entirely developed by a single person. The music, the artwork, the gameplay and storyline are all unbelievably well crafted. If you need something to play, play THIS!
Cave Story, for sure. There's a free version you can get online if you want to try it out, but the "full" version is on Steam and has upgraded graphics, music, and some other extra stuff. Supposedly Toby was inspired by it, so there's that too.
It is phenomenal. If you aren't sure if you'll like it, you can download the original game (that is, just the game with none of the extra sprinkles from the Nicalis ports like choosing graphics/music, etc.) for free.
The Switch version is objectively the port with the most content and quality of life features, but it's 30 dollars for a game originally released for free. The Steam version has slightly less stuff, but it's only 15 bucks, and it's on sale half the time anyways.
Good list.
You can go download Cave Story (the original freeware) online and try it out. The Switch version is (currently) just the steam version with some slight graphical/QoL upgrades/OST remixes, but the gameplay/story is identical to the original version. If you like the Freeware version and want to play it mobile, DO IT. I own Cave Story+ in two locations not including the Switch and still love it.
I'm on playthrough #4 on the Switch and I bought it on 6/20.
Edit with link to freeware version
Since this was posted in Android Gaming, I assume you meant Android-specific one-man dev teams. However, you did mention Notch, who didn't create Minecraft for Android - and though Minecraft is now on Android, the port was handled by more than just one man. So, in the event that you're asking about one-man dev teams for any system, Cave Story was created by one man who goes by the handle Pixel. That game has quite a large cult following now.
Similar to Minecraft (though FAR less successful), it's spawned multiple ports on many systems, and those ports have been handled by other, multiple-man dev teams. Most recently, it was ported to the Nintendo Switch, and coincidentally the game releases today!
Cave Story+ is an updated version of the original, which is available for free here. I'd advise giving it a try, it's a little old but still really great, and personally I prefer the fan translation over the official one that's in Cave Story+ (although it isn't perfect either).
Something I made for fun using Cave editor. (And Paint.NET to edit the graphics)
Original map if you want a comparison. :D
Since you already mentioned dark souls (which is so grossly incandescent) I don't feel the need to repeat the praise.
Tho in my mind there are a couple of games you should try
Cave story (http://www.cavestory.org/, also available for a little price in steam as a plus-version but this is basically the same thing) In my mind the best indie game I have ever played. Just because the mechanics are really really good for a platformer and the atmosphere is surprisingly mature.
Axiom verge I'd say that this would go to the category ''metroidvania 2.0''. If you like adventuring and exploring alien worlds this is the thing for you
Any 2d metroid game These you can emulate pretty easily on your computer. All classics which are heavy on the atmosphere and exploration and the perfect fit for your need
Cave Story is rather difficult, but it is similar to Undertale. Maybe check it out if it's on sale sometime.
edit: or better yet, download the free version. It's only missing a hard mode and slightly more polished graphics, so you won't be missing out on anything significant. http://www.cavestory.org/download/cave-story.php
Play Cave Story of course!: )
No, seriously. Not the same kind of game, but it hits a lot of similar notes as Undertale. It has complex, likable cast of characters, lovely music, awesome bosses, and a branching, non-linear story with lots of outcomes, and while you can't save everyone, a lot of deaths you will inevitably experience on your first playthrough can be avoided.
Also, you can still get the (superior) original version of the game for free if you don't want to pay the $15 Steam asking price for the "enhanced" edition. Grab the pre-patched English version here.
EDIT Bonus points for Mimigas looking like they could be related to a certain royal goat family: ) (they definitely are bunnies though)
Currently labeled as WR on Cave Story highscore page fore more than a year now.
As you can see, there are still room for improvement, but I called it quits after this record was set.
........should I go back and see if I can improve it?
.....nah.
What can you do? Play the original version of Cave Story on a handheld. A little less impressive now that the DS/3DS has it, but those have changed music/graphics/etc and all.
Emulation for the NES, Genesis, Sega CD, Master System, Gameboy and Gameboy Advance are all quite good. SNES is mostly good with some rough spots. Original Playstation has some gems that people have gotten to work well despite not being on the stores (or only in some regions).
You can find some PSP games undubbed, if that's your jam. Also making your UMDs into Digital Backups and playing those is great if you've got the memory card space.
You can also pirate, but that makes you a terrible person.
This might help, if you haven't tried it yet:
http://www.cavestory.org/forums/index.php?/topic/5422-cave-story-crash-on-start-up-os-x-109/
I don't have a Mac to try it on right now, but let us know if that fixes it!
Cave Story is great. It's absolutely free, right here!
Be sure to set up Config before you run the game (Doukutsu). It's pre-patched with a language switch to English, so you don't need to worry about learning Japanese!
It's like an old 8-bit-ish Metroidvania platformer, with added elements from Jump 'n' Shoot Man. Give it a quick spin if you want - the start can be a bit slow but once you get past Egg Corridor the game really picks up.
It's a very fun indie game, and is an inspiration to many indie developers. It has a Metroidvania feel to it, and an interactive story with multiple endings. It was made by one man in a span of 5 years, and it was done in his free time. It is free at http://www.cavestory.org.
It's a wonderful game! It's like a faster funner super metroid with lots of little tid bits and endings then will make you smile! It's free online and is a very fun thing to just experience on a whim! http://www.cavestory.org/ It's a really special thing!
The 3ds version is just notoriously expensive, which is why people flip when it's cheap. It is and always has been freeware though, I think that's part of why it's such a special thing.
> it costs like 2,5 euro on Steam
The original is free if you just want to try the game out. Cave Story+ is the one on Steam, it has new graphics and music (maybe some other things too but nothing game-changing AFAIK)
Cave story, You can get the original for free. Heres the game designers page, Make sure to get the DELUXE edition, It includes controlpad functionality as default AND a tonne of extra's.
But there is a CaveStory+ on steam for less than £5. It includes improved music (choice of 3 styles including original), Anti-alaising, Fullscreen/windowed, Gamepad usage aswell, new block-styles, mini-boss mode and some hidden extra's unlocked when you complete the game.
It's kind of a balance between them, but I'd say get the free version to see if you want to buy it.
Similar in genre to Little Big Planet and Mario is "Cave Story". There's the special edition on Steam for around $10, and the basic version is available for free (legally) at http://www.cavestory.org/downloads_game.php
There's a million games that are like Halo (collectively, they're called first person shooters). "Team Fortress 2" is kinda like Halo (particularly like the online multiplayer part of Halo, rather than the single player campaign part), and it's available for free on Steam.
If you like Zelda, you might like "Spiral Knights", which is available on Steam and is also free. It's essentially a multiplayer version of Link to the Past, except with more linear dungeons and less story/plot.
If you want more suggestions, feel free to add me as a friend on Steam and we can chat there. Just go to http://steamcommunity.com/id/NebuPookins/ and click the "Add friend" button.
Disclaimer: I'm male.
Cave story is a hit indie game which was originally released as freeware. Installation is somewhat annoying because it was not written in English, but it's a simple enough process. Get it here: http://www.cavestory.org/downloads_game.php/
Cave Story+ just makes things more polished, really. The game itself is really fun. It reminds me of Super Metroid but feels more fluid. You upgrade your weapons by using them over time which unlock new abilities for them, but the weapons can also downgrade. It doesn't take long really, so it's not too much of a bother, it just prevents you from face-tanking everything in the game. Story has some humor mixed in and features some pretty fun boss fights. For the discounted price, I'd definitely recommend getting it.
Please play this game.
I can't say enough good things about it. Then again, I grew up with Japanese platformers like this, so I suppose I'm very predisposed to liking it.
Cave Story (Doukutsu Monogatari). 2D shooter/platformer. It's free so you don't have any excuse not to try it out. Here, I'll even give you the download link: http://www.cavestory.org/downloads_game.php. There's even a mac port! The last level of this game is legendary.
The song in the steam trailer is one of the tracks on the Cave Story Remix Project (Disc 2, track 16). This particular track was done by tumult.
You can find other remixes here.
Just so you know, cave story is a free game. Cave Story+ costs money, but doesn't do much other than give you a worse translation than the original fan translation (I've found 3 errors so far. 0 in the fan translation).
Just get the freeware version here. http://www.cavestory.org/downloads_game.php .
Heck, a lot of people would argue against getting the + version because it's nicalis, not pixel. Here's some explanation as to why some people would thing CS+ to be a bad thing to support. CaveStory (still legally free) is an amazing game.
Sure, you can still download the OS X version of the original game (for free) here - but it was done by a third party so it's not an official port.
The Wii Ware version featured completely redrawn graphics (still hand-pixeled goodness, but in higher resolution) by Daisuke 'Pixel' Amaya himself - graphics comparison available here. An enhanced soundtrack was also included in the game but should you prefer the original flavour you can always switch turn off these enhancements completely or mix and match so you have new graphics and old music or vice versa.
There's also a couple of gameplay additions in terms of selectable difficulties, a new challenge mode, Curly as a playable character and so on. Overall it just feels like a more complete product and personally I think it's well worth buying just as a thank you to Pixel for his amazing work.
Link's Awakening for $6 is a given if you haven't played it before. It's a Zelda game and it holds up well against the other 2D games in the series.
Donkey Kong for $3 is probably the best you can do in terms of enjoyment per dollar. It's an action/puzzle game and the gameplay is solid enough to hold up well today. (No, it's not the same as the old arcade/NES version, there's a ton of extra levels and game mechanics added.)
Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again for $8 is also quite good. The gameplay is a mix between Donkey Kong (the Game Boy one, above) and Lemmings (yeah, that Lemmings). If you like it, there are two more standalone DS games (not DSiWare) in the series, plus one for GBA.
Plants vs Zombies for $8 is a fantastic game, but the price is kinda steep considering you can find the same game on several other platforms for cheaper. It's a "Defense" style game (think Tower Defense) where you use plants to defend your house from zombies. Those are always fun, but this one is particularly refined. Definitely worth playing, but maybe get it for your phone or wait until a Steam sale instead of getting it on 3DS.
Cave Story for $10 is the best indie Metroidvania game I've come across. It's really very impressive for a one-man project and I'm glad the author has had so much success getting it onto real consoles. However, that doesn't negate the fact that the 2D version is still easily available for free on PC (as it always has been)... so, get it for the 3DS if you want, you won't be disappointed, but I would feel bad recommending that you spend $10 on something you can easily get for free. There's also a 3D version coming out soon... but IMO the original pixel art still looks better.
Seriously, if you haven't played it yet, do it. It's free, and absolutely amazing. There's also always good old classics like Planescape Torment, Arcanum and Fallout 2, available on gog.com.
Just tried it on a Mac Mini running High Sierra and these steps work:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/200900/discussions/0/1488866180593749647/
Reposting the steps here in case that gets deleted:
>Go to the Library, double click on Cave Story+ -> properties -> launch options -> Enter -psn
-> press okay.
>I checked it for you and it works. To make it easier.. select the finder, (while pressing "alt") push go to, click library and click on the folder "Application Support" -> Steam -> steamapps -> common -> Cave Story +.
>Double click on "Cave Story+" open the package -> Contents -> Frameworks -> DELETE the SDL Framework data and replace it with this http://www.cavestory.org/downloads/macsdl.zip (you have to unzip the file first)
Have you played Cave Story? Play Cave Story.
The original version is freeware, or you can buy Cave Story+ on Steam which comes with a few extra modes and optional tweaked graphics/music. It has also been ported to virtually every console ever.
It starts out easy enough but gets extremely difficult as it goes on, and the bonus area that leads to the true ending is infamous for being insanely hard. You might want to look up how to actually reach that ending though, as it's hidden and kinda counterintuitive.
I've never played Shovel Knight or Binding of Isaac, but Cave Story is a great game, and definitely worth experiencing on whatever platform is most convenient for you. (The original PC version is available for free.)
Yes! I’m not sure this is the most up to date link (google around to check I guess), but the Mac port + English translation patch are on http://www.cavestory.org/download/cave-story.php if you scroll down.
The game has been ported numerous times, with updated versions on the Nintendo Switch, 3DS, Wii, DSi, and Steam.
The free version of the game, however, hasn't been updated very often since its initial release in 2004.
If you downloaded it from here, you should be good.
If you were going to play Cave Story, I'd recommend using the tribute site for it, where it is still freeware (as the creator intends). The Steam version is a remaster that people debate over whether or not is very good, and is like, 20 dollars.
Just a heads up, Cave Story is 100% free! Cave Story+ is a great remake- but I still definitely recommend the original.
If you do end up getting CS+ anyways, please please please do yourself a favor and install the original translations. It's very simple, and in my personal opinion is the best way to experience the story.
EDIT: Also wolfenstein is awesome! :)
Perhaps a bit too low-spec for you, but I really enjoyed Cave Story. The remake on steam is $15, but the original is free to download here, so it's worth it to download and try it for a bit. I also haven't played Titan Souls or Hyper Light Drifter, so hopefully this suggestion isn't too far off the mark.
If you enjoyed Undertale I think you'd enjoy Cave Story+, or the free version you can download here. I've never played the free version, only +, but if you do enjoy it and wanted to support the developer, you could grab the + version in the future.
There's also VVVVVV, Rollers of the Realm, Little Inferno, Unmechanical, Shovel Knight, and Downwell for some more games that offer a unique and fun experience.
This is actually where I got the software. There is also an English fan-site that is more legible.
I've been using the 0.9.1.4 version with the Gryzor87 manual & your primer on the thing.
Are the instruments you're talking about the ones that come with the v0.9.2.5 ZIP?
I've been dying to figure it out.
I can see from the video that they are the default u-ORG_MXX and u-ORG_DXX names but I can't make out the specifics.
I know the Voice and Unit tabs are more legible in the Batang or Arial Rounded MT Bold font.
Having watched the video again, the drums are just ORG_D00, D01, and D02.
I think I can also spot an ORG_M00 there as well (for the heartbeat).
I didn't even know the ORG instruments existed :|
Cave Story The original game is freeware and is an excellent side scrolling platformer
Cave Story + is a slightly more updated version of the game.
I don't like any of the JRPG clones that use RPGMaker, but it can make some great games like To The Moon, Lisa, or 199X.
Not to say the JRPG clones that are made with it are bad necessarily, they just all look the same and aren't really all that deep or interesting.
If you want a good free game, get Cave Story or just pick up Cave Story+ in the Steam summer sale since it's a great game and some things are updated in the + version. Spelunky is also a good free game.
Other than those, just emulate some SNES RPG classics if you want good RPGs.
Pretty much all of Cave Story.
If you haven't played it you should give it a try (The original version is free.)
[Around halfway through the game you have to kill one of the major characters. Depending on your actions a lot of other could characters die.](/spoiler)
Download Cave Story for Windows. You can get it from here, for example. Note that I'm getting a security alert when downloading it from there, but I believe that's only because it's a zip that contains exe files. Put the zip content in /roms/ports/CaveStory, so that the exe files are at the root of the CaveStory folder.
Cave Story is one of the best free games of all time IMO.
Jade Empire is currently free for a limited time (requires an Origin account).
...oh, I may have been mistaken. On checking, the person credited with being one of the remixers on the Cave Story Remix Project was "Quinn Fox", not Toby Fox.
Since you asked, though, http://www.cavestory.org/fan-works/music-projects.php
Cave Story+ is just the original Cave Story (the freeware) with new graphics and music. The original has been FAN-translated to a lot of languages, but Cave Story+ has an official translation to english (which the original doesn't as it was made in japanese and translated later by fans).
If you have the money, I would buy it on Steam or Humble Bundle (which includes a Steam key and a DRM-free version), but I would wait for the Christmas sale.
On the meantime I would play the original translated to whatever is your language (as it is free!), and if you like it, you can buy Cave Story+. It has different endings, so it's worth to play more than once.
Have fun!
Okay, so this game is a little old school and uses pixel art. If you can deal with that, or better yet if you love playing games like that, the music and story will entrance you. The story is simple enough at first, about a floating island with an indigenous race resembling rabbits being used for the creation of weaponry. As the game goes on it gets more complex, with individuals on the side taking advantage of said race questioning things, and members of that race realizing things about the outside world.
There's a token villain (a good one imo), and some pretty funny "evil" sidekicks. The gameplay is top notch Metroidvania and keeps you very interested in the story hunting for secrets. It's one of my favorite games of all time, and while I've tried to whittle it down to a bite sized blurb here, I truly cannot recommend the game enough to anyone who likes a great item gathering platformer.
Play the TI graphing calculator version Just kidding, yeah you can play the regular version for free here. I would play CS+ if you can get it, since it has more features, enhanced graphics, and remastered + new music (you can toggle between graphic styles and old/new/remastered music) but if you can't get it you can't really go wrong with the original game. IIRC WiiWare and eShop versions are similar to Cave Story+ minus certain features and CS+ kind of brings them all together. There's also a 3DS remake of the game on 3DS retail that I believe is hard to find, but I prefer to 2D sprites.
I like Cave Story. There's no reason not to play it, as it'll take you a few days and you can get it on basically any platform (Wii, 3DS, PC, Mac, Linux, etc.) Also, it's free on computers.
