Late response is because I only now i have experience of both products.
SmartDNS is baster and more stable in my experience and works fine with UHD. I'm yet to see Control D been able to handle UHD stream.
On the other hand Control D has actively been developed and has incredible granular control. . Meanwhile SmartDNS is not even able to fix Disney+ . That is 2+ years without any development. All questions to support are fobbed off . I have been using smartdns for 4 years and have not seen any upgrades or config changes in that time. User interface is extremely outdated.
GetFlix is probably worse as they have all the right switches but they don't do anything. So the function is not there. Support will tell you to test this and that but the functionality is not there , you can see that on lots of forums. What is there works. A bit worse then SmartDNS but better then Control D.
Yes, at their regular price shown on their pages, they all are super expensive.
However, the BEST I could find (digging on various discount / coupon sites!), was abut $2.33 / month for 3 year with SmartDNS.
With Unlocator, I’ve got around 93 cents per month - 2 years.
Most important, shows start much faster compare with SmartDNS.
FWIW, Unlocator gives you 1 set of DNS no matter where in the world you are - 1 primary and 1 secondary! They do their things behind the scene! NOT a reason for folks to switch from their current providers but it proves they know their 💩 better than the rest!
It works fine for everything bar if you want US Netflix. You have to use ExpressVPN which has somehow gotten around the recent continuous blocking of US Netflix except on those recent smart tvs with the built in Netflix app e.g. LG CX OLED.
Nope not inaccurate at all as I’ve tested it myself. ExpressVPN appears to be the only one whose Mediastreamer DNS has US Netflix. has also confirmed to me and on their own website under “user console” and “services” the following: “Latest Update - 22/09/2021 Over the last 6 weeks we have been working with our US Server provider for a solution that we have developed. While we wait for our server provider to see if they are able to implement our solution, we put in place a temporary server but Netflix have regularly been blocking it.
We wish it was better news, but we are still working on this and hope for a positive outcome”
Yeah, ExpressVPN is the only provider (I believe) that is still providing US Netflix without issue on their Mediastreamer DNS. However, HBO Max, All4 and US Disney do not work on their Mediastreamer DNS service.
Same, I always ask when they will implement the option to turn off Disney+ US. To be honest before I worked with ExpressVPN “DNS option” but the streaming is slower than smart, also I had so many difficulties to use HBOMax
Yeah, I have an active ExpressVPN subscription and tried their app on my devices and Netflix US now works flawlessly. Going to cancel the DNS service.
The answer i got from SmartDns
"We determined that the issue is caused by the Netflix US App on certain devices, that includes newer versions of Samsung/LG Smart TVs, most Android TVs, Game Consoles, Google TVs and Amazon Fire Devices and unfortunately, won’t work with the service right now and the issue is not related to our service."
Me thinks they should put a disclaimer on their webpage warning that the service will not work for Netflix with majority of devices out there.
But i guess that would mean a big hit to their profits :)
I use CactusVPN as a back-up - great dns service that unblocks everything including Apple Channels and several regions of NF. They don’t support Discovery+ yet - but if enough drop them a message Im sure they will !
I'm pretty sure they use the same network, because when SmartDNS has network issues, so does GetFlix. I also find GetFlix unblocks the same channels as SmartDNS although they're not listed on GF website.
Where are you located? Smart DNS Proxy told that they don't proxy every channel's video streaming as it's not needed. Depending on your distance to the USA and your ISP routing to those channels US networks might give a different experience for everyone. However, the channels needs to be proxied totally are coming from the Smart DNS Proxy US network itself which is better optimized for global users. They seem to have a great connection with multiple data carriers globally. But there is no specific info on their website showing which channel is coming from what network.
Using the closest DNS server to your physical location as primary DNS and 2nd closest DNS server as secondary DNS gives better reliability. As they are closer your ISP will reach them faster. However you are in west coast of Canada, you might want to use Smart DNS Proxy Washington DNS as Primary and Toronto as Secondary.
I have a seperate router connected to my main modem with Smart DNS Proxy setup on it. So whenever I want to access Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and Disney Plus I connect to this router wireless connection from my device.
I don't think youtube TV is generally supported by Smart DNS Proxy as they don't mention that it's supported. Are you located in the US? I think youtube TV can only work when you are physically located in the US. I have no issue with US Netflix or other channels on my Apple TV. You might want to ask your ticket to move to their L3 network engineers so they can troubleshoot for your network to see what's causing this issue for you.

This is because your IP is changed and Smart DNS Proxy network can not know that you are it's user. You just need to login to your account and activate your new IP address in the network. Then you can stream Hulu and others right away.
