Random piece of knowledge that I'll never be able to bring up any where else: VPNs based in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States are NOT safe for hackers seeking to do work in those countries because they are all part of the five eyes intelligence network. This was highly needed. I constantly see posts like "Best VPN?" then someone goes "CactusVPN has no logs11!!1!1"etc etc. Then I try to explain that what a company says and what they do behind your back are two different things. Hopefully you'll update those sections more often.

I'm using CactusVPN. It encrypts your traffic so ISPs and other people can't see what you do. No, it won't slow your phone down, but internet speeds can be slower depending on which server you use.
Also, I recommend staying away from free VPNs such as Hotspot Shield and much more. They are garbage ones that sell your data. If you aren't paying for it, you're the product.
Another tip, if you want to torrent copyrighted content on campus, you can do so (against the University's terms of use and the law, of course) with a cheap VPN provider like Mullvad, CactusVPN, etc. If you're savvy you can set up a seedbox with an appropriate provider and download your files to your computer after they're downloaded on the remote box.
You should of course be courteous to your dorm-mates, if you're using a lot of bandwidth I think they might throttle or ban you (that's a question for /u/umdnocguy). The VPN traffic is encrypted though, so to UMD all it looks like is a ridiculous amount of gibberish getting sent between you and wherever your VPN provider is.

I use CactusVPN as my tool of choice, but mainly for when I am out and about with my mobile phone/laptop and am using free wi-fi in a pub or cafe as it gives me an extra layer of security. It also has the ability to kill other programs (such as uTorrent) should the connection break. Here is a review for it as well as some server speed tests. The interface for it has been updated since the article, but the settings are just the same.
If you are going to use a VPN, then it's always a good idea to check to see if you have any DNS leaks as well.
Depends on your use. Different VPNs have different uses. You have filters in place and you can choose what's important to you. For me these were the best choices.

Honestly I just want to prevent Comcast from easily making a profit off my search history. I play a lot of fast online games and watch a lot of videos, so I don't want a noticeably big ping increase. I'm also not made of money, but I'll pay a few bucks a month to "stick it to the man".

A VPN will encrypt your data and help ensure your privacy online. While Smart DNS is specifically for accessing geo-restricted content. Performance wise Smart DNS is faster because it lacks encryption. Since you already have PIA and plan to do more than just avoid geo-restrictions I suggest you give it a try. It should perform well. If not a few companies (OverPlay, PureVPN, CactusVPN) have plans that include Smart DNS and VPN all-in-one.
Sounds like a couple of separate issues, let me try and explain.
If you want to use your VPN for torrenting, make sure you select a VPN provider that allows for this. For instance allow CactusVPN () for P2P on one of their servers (in Amsterdam).
The other question depends on your setup. Say you live in Sweden and are connected to this VPN server in Amsterdam, and you want to access US Netflix. In this case the browser plugins will work absolutely fine.

However, your connection speed might not be good enough for Netflix, if you are connected through a VPN AND downloading torrents while accessing US Netflix through a browser plugin.
I would recommend to do one thing at a time, and use your VPN for Netflix rather than the browser plugins.

The VPN? I use CactusVPN - All internet traffic is routed directly through them and encrypted. It's pretty easy to do. General internet speeds suffer (Drops to about 5mbit from 40) but it makes youtube work!

Nobody's mentioned CactusVPN yet. They're based in Moldova, so outside the Fourteen Eyes, and have servers all over the world. I THINK, however, they don't support Netflix proxying, but I don't use Netflix anyway so they work fine for me! Never any downtime (and if there is, another server in the same country picks it up) and affordable - I pay £15 a quarter

I used to use Torguard and I was happy with their service but I recently discovered that the bbc iplayer was blocked. So I am now looking for a new VPN provider.
I've had a look at the detailed VPN comparison chart and I was wondering if I am using it correctly. I have set the fourteen eyes jurisdiction to No, Enemy of the internet - NO, Logs Traffic - No, Log timestamps - NO and it has left me with the following,

Yes I have used them. PIA is good since it's cheap and offers good security, but it doesn't work well with Netflix lately. It also doesn't offer as much security as TorGuard VPN, and it's 6 month pricing model is weird. TorGuard is only 29.99 for 6 month. CactusVPN is even cheaper than PIA, but not as good for speeds. I would not use BlackVPN or NordVPN since they don't have as good of clients.

Smart DNS Proxy, PureVPN, CactusVPN, StrongVPN, AceVPN, HideIPVPN, Getflix to name a few. I tested a few of them but for me one provider for both hasn't worked out. Most of them either had a great SmartDNS service but poor VPN speed and 'security' or the other way around. With most of these providers you can only use either the VPN or SmartDNS but not both at the same time. I use the combination of PureVPN w/o SmartDNS and Getflix w/o VPN which works great for me. Getflix is the only SmartDNS provider who actually provides a dedicated (Smart)DNS-over-VPN solution with special servers so you can be connected to a VPN and use SmartDNS at the same time.
Among the cheapest services are EarthVPN (around £3-4/mo) HideIpVPN ($5/mo and CactusVPN ($4-5/mo).
If you just need to unblock specific streaming services, you'll probably be better off with a Smart DNS service. It's similar to VPN, but only for bypassing regional IP blackouts with hardly any speed loss (note that there is no encryption involved).
Quite a few VPN services also offer Smart DNS either as an add-on or as a separate service. In fact, the above mentioned HideIpVPN and CactusVPN both sell Smart DNS.
Another decent example of VPN/Smart DNS combo service is OverPlay.
You could pay for SmartDNS (not a VPN) from CactusVPN which is a region unblocker that runs about $4 A month. It does not affect internet speeds at all. I've been using it with NFLGP all season with no issues. CactusVPN supports DDNS so it is the easiest to use for those who don't have a static WAN IP.
There are some free ones out there, too. Google "region unblocker".
Honestly it really depends on the VPN in question and which server you are going to connect to. (US/UK/France/Hong Kong etc)
I have done a few VPN reviews in the past along with some basic server speed tests and the download speeds of my main 2 VPN providers (CactusVPN and Private Internet Access) don't really have any noticeable speed hits on my connection when connecting to a local (same country and close location) server. However, and I am from the UK, if I connect to a server in the US so I can check out what is showing on Netflix US, then my speeds are affected due to the physical distance that the connection has to travel. That is something that you just have to deal with. Though even at that distance I don't have any issue with streaming

Yeah, I figured. In this case it doesn't matter though. I'll only be using it to watch streams and ping doesn't matter there. I'm still using the free trial for CactusVPN right now and the streams I've been watching haven't lagged once.

The NFL gives Netherlands free access to their NFL GamePass. So if it thinks you are in the Netherlands, you get it for free.
The $2/mo is just too cheap to pass up on instead of trying to get a new CactusVPN log in every weekend.
I also struggled with this for a few days and ultimately succeeded with the LineageOS option "Allow clients to use VPNs".
For VPN, the best performance I found was with the WireGuard official app using CactusVPN (one of the few VPNs that isn't blocked by Netflix yet). Speeds are 60-100% of your ordinary speeds with this method. Around 24 down 3 up in the suburbs.
It's unclear how Visible detects hotspots/tethering since they re-imposed the limit this year but the VPN solution seems to be good enough for now.
Things that didn't work: TTL=65 on tethered router (does work on Cricket still), VPN Hotspot app (connection stops working entirely), L2TP (awful speeds) or PPTP (fails to connect) on either router or tethered phone.
I use CactusVPN as a back-up - great dns service that unblocks everything including Apple Channels and several regions of NF. They don’t support Discovery+ yet - but if enough drop them a message Im sure they will !
My point is that you gave no alternative to one that DOES work. Does CactusVPN work, or TorGuard? Does AirVPN?
Chances are that a lot of these services that are good don't work either. I can confirm that TG does work with NBA league pass, but only because of the streaming / dedicated IPs. I wouldn't expect most other services to though.
But if you recommend alternative vpns like Express or Nord, then expect to have the same problems with services even like Netflix (because they have too many users flooding the servers).
Use CactusVPN - their DNS service us quite good and fully supports Apple Channels ! The only service I found they don’t support is Hulu Live (but Standard Hulu is fine). It’s a great service and the only one I found that unblocks Apple Channels
Never advance unlocked a Steam game via VPN before, but I'm on a Japanese server via CactusVPN right now and it is unpacking. Do I need to stay VPNed to play the game or can I disconnect once I'm playing?
CactusVPN und AirVPN ist bei mir echt ziemlich stabil, für ein Always-ON reicht ein raspberry pi4 mit Kühlung und einem extra USB 3 LAN adapter ansich aus, je nachdem wieviel Bandbreite du anstrebst.. Split tunnel kannst du relativ simpel in der OpenVPN config machen, dann routet er einfach die IP von nicht durch den Tunnel :)

I can testify that making a new account with different Phone + different Google Account & different Wifi Network still starts as chat disabled ..
going further than that (because i thought maybe they banned my whole country lol) made CactusVPN free trial account, ip set to USA, Memu Player changing Device Id, Phone Number, IMEI, Wifi Hotspot, Mac Address.. reaching lvl 15 and still cant talk.. the funny thing is that my main account can talk at server 227 and an alt i have can talk at 229 but any new server i try with those account are chat-disabled as well as any fresh account on any server (including 227 & 229).
If there is a f2p player here that never purchased something I would really appreciate him trying to get a fresh new account and testing on any server if he can talk after lvl 15 (write in chat, relogin and check if msg isnt deleted)
So far I've tried CactusVPN and NordVPN and I've been disappointed with both in terms of speed (Gig Fiber but only getting 1-5mbps). I really just want something for torrenting, and Kodi that doesn't keep logs and is reasonably fast.

Hello, Looking for a VPN to use for a first timer, I looked through the chart, and came up with three that I was thinking would be good. This is not saying I will not take other suggestions for VPN's, I certainly will. I am in the U.S. and the main reason for VPN is just for basic browsing and gaming. I don't do torrenting, or Netflix.
The three I am looking at are CactusVPN, , and MyPricatNetwork. Again, I am open to any suggestions.
And as a side question, do you need a VPN while gaming? If I log into a game and it already has my information in there, email and name, does the VPN really do anything helpful?
HBO Now is possible in Canada, but they make it tough since you can only sign up using a mobile device.
- Sign up with a DNS services like CactusVPN.
- Configure your home router with the new DNS server IPs.
- Connect your phone or tablet to Wi-Fi, download and install the HBO Now app. (Sideload on Android, create a U.S. iTunes account for iOS)
- Sign up for HBO Now and use either your Google Wallet or iTunes subscriptions to pay for it.
That's what I did using Android, I've been using it for months. If you want the smart TV app, you'll need to change the store region of your smart TV. Both my Samsungs are on the U.S. region.
I don't happen to have VPN Unlimited, however I do use CactusVPN with their OpenVPN files. From my past experience, standalone VPN clients tend to be poorly written and some are shady (proprietary). If VPN Unlimited offers OpenVPN files, it's probably your best route.
P.S. If you're new to both Linux and Networking, Kali Linux is a bad place to start. Try Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, or OpenSUSE first. You could easily install the same toolset that Kali has with very little work.
No idea then. Maybe it can drain battery faster since the VPN sometimes has to be reconnected when you turn your phone off then back on.

I use Cyberghost but it's the premium-year-long-subscription. I paid $7 for it during a Humble-Lifehacker-Bundle last month, and for $7, it works flawlessly. I don't know how good the free version is, but the paid version works amazingly well.
Another VPN I have used, in the past, was CactusVPN when they were just a startup company. I've noticed their price has gone up a bit, but when they were first around, they were great as well.

But 1) we're not talking about corporate VPNs here (companies do not use services like CactusVPN and PIA); and 2) other than in the case of people who live in countries with repressive regimes, VPNs are mainly used for torrenting (or worse). I just started using CactusVPN and I have to say it is really nice. They may night have a ton of server locations but their speed seems really fast (for me) and I have had no problems.
Plus I really love that they offer the SSTP protocol, which a lot of VPN providers do not.

Yes, there is actually. Let's say for instance, I illegally download a movie and the company that owns the rights wants to sue. They now have that I from CactusVPN and that IP can be traced back to me since they log what IP I was using. That's the problem.
They don't block P2P. Use The Netherlands or Romanian servers for P2P (been using CactusVPN for years now and have written 3 reviews along with speed tests over the years as well)
The only logs they retain are on initial connection and disconnection, email (if given) and creditcard/paypal info. The network logs are stored so they can try and help with network issues should a user have an issue. (ALL VPN providers do this, otherwise how would they be able to help you) They don't forward DMCA notices, nor have they.
Please don't spread things about services you know nothing about. They are a decent VPN provider.
VPN services can be found for pretty cheap so if you really are concerned about your security, just pay for one. I use CactusVPN which is $6/month and according to them, they keep no logs of what you're downloading/uploading, sites you go to, or applications you use.
Any VPN (most have support to Android and iOS). Although grab paid one instead of free one - if something is free then the price is your browsing history. Hidemyass, ExpressVPN, CactusVPN - random examples.
It basically cloaks you from your carrier. According to him you are only connected to the VPN provider site via encrypted tunnel. But what goes through that tunnel - ISP can't tell.
Also helps at overriding regional IP locks, for example if you want to watch Netflix in a country not yet supported :P
I ended up going with CactusVPN, they are having a sale now with $1 / month and $4.99 afterwards.. its actually quite nice as i have a desktop client now that i can activate sort of like a vpn which will save me from having to redo the ip changes every now and then.

No problem! This was just maybe a month ago. I think these are the instructions that I used. The key was going through my computer because I couldn't find a way to do it on my phone. PureVPN is $4.16 a month if you pay for 12 months up front. It has the added benefit of giving you the option of DNS service OR full VPN service, where you can pick your endpoint (in case DNS alone doesn't fix your issue, or you want more privacy). Also very easy to use (has it's own GUI client).

CactusVPN has VPN and SmartDNS options for $4.99 /mo
There are plenty of others in the ~$5 market, but lower than that is hard to come by if you don't buy several months upfront.

Holy shit. I've tried a few different trials as well as the VPN/DNS service I pay for (CactusVPN) and either they didn't work at all or the feed was shit. I was streaming full-on HD within 2 minutes of registering for the trial. Preeeesh.
What do you mean by online games not working well with PIA? It really does depend on how far you are from the server that you are connecting to and several other things. I doubt that you are gonna get better performance with mentioned CactusVPN but then again I never tried it. They offer free VPN trial for 24 hours from the account sign up so why not give it a try?
I have used and reviewed quite a few VPNs (paid) in the past including BTGuard. In regards to being able to use P2P, then yes it will allow you to do so. Also they don't (according to them) retain user logs (apart from your payment details which is needed) which is good.
Their support though is non existent (I never received any replies when I used to use them.
If you are going to be using a VPN for P2P usage then I would also try to find one that also has a built in Kill Switch, that will stop your P2P client should the VPN connection fail, but will restart the client when the connection is reacquired again.
CactusVPN is great for this, plus it will give you access to multiple servers in the US/UK and Netherlands, allowing you to access other sites that would be otherwise blocked to you due to geo-restrictions like Hulu/iPlayer etc depending on where you live.
Price wise it is about the same.

I got lucky by using . They have instant shipping of the code (did need to verify by text btw). Also FlyVPN and CactusVPN worked for me to get the key into origin and download the game. Took 15 minutes to get the installer, so thats pretty decent for a vpn. and are out of stock. For a european the gmg site was not showing the US version. It did via vpn but i got stuck in an infinite loop after paypal (which thankfully did not complete). I'm guessing other keysites will be sending keys but all the cheap ones take longer.
No it doesn't. I have use CactusVPN for a couple of years now, as well as writing a review for it along with server speed tests.
I have also done the same with PIA which is just as good, and has more servers that CactusVPN. That said, I personally prefer CactusVPN over PIA for ease of use and great UI.
