I find the best solution is to have the VPN on your router. Some VPN services support this and some even sell a router that's pre-setup. Astrill and ExpressVPN are examples. Once set up, all devices connected to the router's network will be on the VPN and the game should work fine

Highly recommend this to any player who doesn't want to deal with wireless controllers. I personally hate rocker d-pads, so I found this. You can pull off the rocker and press the individual buttons and slap it back on once you're done. Only 20 + tax.
