I use Infinite Painter and unlocked the £3 version for creating imagery, and it can theoretically be used for writing too (pen or pencils are available as brushes) but I quite like to use S note calligraphy pens on a fake lined notebook background. The two things can be combined into a bigger composite image scrapbook style.

We have a wide variety of journals here, from rustic to ornate, blank, lined or grid pages, and of all sizes. You just find what feels right to you, and we'll happily set it next to ours on the shelves here.
Personally, I ordered a neat little Japanese journal, with a thin paper cover and thin pages that hold ink remarkably well. Even graphite hasn't faded too poorly. There's a link to it HERE is the journal on amazon, and HERE is the finished product and it's first page. Be sure to post a picture when you settle on yours.

Here it is. It's got a super thin cover, but aside from that, everything else is stellar.
