I am not sure about this site. It seems good if a little basic, but that may be because it is new and it could be developed further over time.
However. It directly recommends VPN and says that it is free (in fact it only has a free trial). Given the basic nature of the rest of the information, it gives me the impression that it could have been created simply to push this particular provider.
But - perhaps this is a well-intended privacy site in its infancy, and I don't want to discourage anyone from getting involved in such a worthy enterprise! If this is the case I would suggest that whoever runs the site instead offer a list of suitable VPNs and recommend users decide for themselves based on their use-case. Ideally, it would point users to u/ThatOnePrivacyGuy 's site here which has very comprehensive information. Other suggestions for e-mail providers and browsers too, perhaps?
Seconding IVPN. I have used airvpn for a year, but decided to look around as I had quite a few dropouts and issues waking from sleep. IVPN is a bit more costly but it's slick and fast. Get 79mbps without vpn, 60 is on a good day with. IVPN also support multihop which is cool.
Signed up for IVPN last week. One of the pricier options, but I'm getting great download speeds, no downtime issues or anything like that.
Their VPN client is really easy to use, and they offer three connected devices at any one time, so covers my desktop, tablet and phone.
They also offer multihop, allowing your connection to be routed through two VPN servers, rather than one.
Somewhat unrelated, but I signed up for LastPass a few months ago too, after one of my accounts was compromised following a mass instagram hack. Unique passwords for everything, all encrypted.
Me personally:
I tried Cyberghost when it was on the Humble Bundle, but I believe I experienced throttling and the speeds were just in general awful. Most of the time I couldn't get images to load on certain sites and the iOS app never even got past the loading screen for me.
I decided to fork out for NordVPN last month and I've been using it for normal browsing and downloading fine. The speeds aren't bad, and I only get connection issues with certain servers. No issues torrenting or streaming. (Though I haven't tried to use it for Netflix/iPlayer yet)
I signed up to BlackVPN the other week. Seems like one of the more obscure options, but accepts bitcoin payments, based in Hong Kong, servers all around the world, has a mobile app so you can encrypt your regular mobile browsing (I must say, the Netherlands get so few online adverts via soundcloud/youtube compared to us!).
I haven't experienced any significant speed difference, even when accidentally leaving the VPN active whilst playing online games.
A VPN provider can support OpenVPN so you can use the OpenVPN client to connect to their service.
OpenVPN is not a service provider like say AirVPN is but AirVPN offer OpenVPN as a way to connect. Clear?
I used to use Tunnelbear, but after looking for a more advanced vpn have switched to NordVPN because (as of this post) they are running a 70% off 2 years service deal.
Tunnelbear - Super easy to use, pick a country, click the button and go. If you're not tech savvy this might be the one for you, but I found the lack of choice glaring after browsing the services offered by other vpn providers. Speeds are fine and I didn't notice any connection errors but it is a bit pricier than others, especially considering they don't support torrenting or netflix. They're also based in Canada, which is a 5 eyes country.
NordVPN: For those of you running win7 onwards, they provide a handy app to simplify the process of picking and connecting to a server. Software files are provided for mac, and linux is supported but it's a bit more involved to set up a connection (took me ~15 mins, after which it's click and connect).
Where this really shines is the choice offered in your connections. A large list of countries, most with multiple servers each dedicated to a particular thing - top security "Double VPN" or high speed servers for streaming and a host inbetween. I've only tried one of their Doubl VPN servers atm, but I've had no connection issues so far and speeds have been decent enough to play a youtube vid at 720p60fps and watch a twitch stream at medium settings with no buffering.
I've tried torrenting and had no problems whatsoever so all's fine on that front. Streaming seems fine, twitch as I previously mentioned, and although I don't watch netflix so can't verify they claim on their website you should be able to watch it through their app.
Based in Panama, so no need to worry about 5eyes etc.
I'll try out one of their fast servers and update later.
I have used more than 5 in the past (all premium good ones) and now I am using PureVPN for around 8 months. The primary reason for dropping 3 of the top ones was the afct that they were based in the US or other 14 eyes country. Plus, I really like the new apps of purevpn on all devices along with their good support!
