You are asking for beginners, I get that. But what if you could make one purchase and then not have to buy more books as time progresses? The Vegetable Gardeners Bible by Ed Smith is excellent.
We are using these bags right now and they are great! Perfect size for 3-4 small plants or one big squash plant. I really like how lightweight they are, even when completely full of soil.
Get some self watering pots from Walmart. That's what I started with. They have a reservoir at the bottom that holds water and gets wicked up by the soil to the roots during the day.
