About 1: Yes, I do agree, but I guess it can be done with generating "allies" kingdom on world gen, so if you get into war with one kingdom, the other one opposes you so you're not too powerful for taking them one by one and playing some kind of agar.io?
About 2: Yeah, that's seems true, but that's if we take the "evil king pays his army and doesn't care about peasants" formula. If we see it as "angry king which doesn't care anything but themselves and feeds even soldiers that defend him with dirt" formula, then my argument actually makes sense. Also, we need to limit the player somehow in bloodthirst imo.
About 3: No, I mean public opinion.
About 4: Yeah, this will slown you down, but while you're being slowned down the invaders attack you, taking the gold, so it makes the gameplay actually harder than just slowier. Also, it prevents player from getting OP too fast and adds a bit more time of joy.
About 7: I didn't know that, sorry! Didn't play in a long time and waiting for some kind of global update to go back in, but I still watch the dev proccess. And "helped too much people lose" actually makes sense - people want more and more, so they go on riot to take all of the your resources. Actually, I took this idea from Reigns where you gotta keep balance by decisions, and it seems like fitting thing for warsim.
About 8: Yeah, true, but as your army grows and wealth grows too, you're either protected by the army, or have a War Commander on your front. This is realistic, at least! :p
Well I know for sure that if you got a copy of Virtual Box and a Windows ISO from Microsoft, you could do it for free since the Windows demo is actually really quite unrestricted. Should work fine with steam too.
It makes me extremely happy to see how the game is shaping out with time and acquiring new features and ideas! Honestly, Warsim is about to become one of my top favorite roguelikes of all time. It really does and will have an infinite potential. Like if i want to play as a barbaric warlord and exterminate all the races i don't like, i can do that. Or if i want to be alldefence little diplomatic village and observe the world slowly destroy itself, i'd just be happy to watch and giggle. You're making something truly amazing Huw and i believe in your inevitable success! Keep up the fantastic work! Speaking of magic tho - you can truly expand it in hundreds of different ways. One of the coolest magic systems i know about look like this: http://clip2net.com/clip/m125379/9a3b8-clip-43kb.png You have a few basic magic schools, positive and negative energy and combining them together (which requires mastering them first) will make you able to ascend to specific unique ones that are far more powerful. Such a cool concept but i've never seen anything like that implemented in games
I really love the sort of immersion sounds, like the new brawl pit sfx. To me, they really, really add to the world. For example, some very quiet page turning sounds and maybe muffled shush-ing from the librarian while you're reading in the library would be awesome, or the sounds of blackmarket-ers going about their day with wagons and street sounds would be cool. If we're talking really fancy here, you could muffle those street sounds if you entered a building in the black-market. (For example, seagulls and general clamour of crates being loaded and unloaded on Dockrow, but when you enter one of the shops those sounds still play, but muffled.) But yeah, that's all more complicated polish than actual content really!
I do sort of agree with the main theme being too intense. Maybe as a battle theme or something that plays when you're being raided, but booting up the game to hear that one initial loud note is always a bit jarring; even if it does fit with the theme of the game?
If you're looking for sound inspiration try here; https://tabletopaudio.com/ A site made for tabletop RPG ambience but I've used it in the past for just general background chatter while working.
