I don't use zoneminder myself but thought I'd pop in here and show you rclone. It supports SFTP and encryption but you'd kind of have to script your own recurring upload.
Thought it might be useful to you.
There are a few ways todo this, depending on the size of your setup, how many cameras you're running, and your Linux skills. If you have just a few cameras running at a lower res (say 640x480@10fps). I would check out rclone. I haven't used it myself but it looks promising.
That will send pretty much everything to the cloud.
If you want to save on bandwidth and cloud storage then you'll likely need to write a script to monitor for high scoring events and send only those to the cloud. Others here would know better on how todo that then me.
But at a guess I would write a script that rsyncs the most recent events and images to the cloud. Then set that script in "Execute Command on all matches" feature in Filters with a filter for "Total score of the event < X ".
I would discourage you from trying to mount a network drive as the "events" and "images" folder. Unless you have a serious internet pipe.
Good luck. Make sure to update us on what you decide, I have been considering doing something like this myself.
3 cameras is fine for zoneminder... but any more and you are asking for trouble. Especially if this rig is not powerful. I had zm on a dual xeon 2.66 (two physcial quad cores) and zm caused the system to lag with 10 cameras. Lag to the point where SSH had delays between key strokes.
Cameras on wifi can't really fall in to the reliable category because there may be interference from humans with other devices or simply the building itself. zm should reconnect but you'll have a lot of blue frames (broken videos).
well its been 6 days you'll know if you can use it or not. If you find you don't like it try Shinobi :) https://moeiscool.github.io/Shinobi/
I know it's late. The update was released on 15 March 2014. Apparently, it won't work too well in anything later that 13.10.
Issac Connor maintains a PPA. According to him, 1.28 may support versions later than 13.10.
Thanks! I found a few thanks to your suggestion - looks like the Topcony (and possibly IeGeek) PTZ one's might work too (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Security-Tracking-Topcony-Detection-Recording-Black/dp/B09B1PZPXP) - although I might go for the Louwise to be sure.
I'm intending to use ZM so that I can block camera access to the internet via the router - is this what you mean by disallowing 0.0.0.0?
I didn't realize that you were doing an indoor cam. That one does look a lot more capable.
I see now that you were looking at Reolink. I used one of these for a while. It wasn't a bad camera, but it did not play well with Zoneminder and I had to replace it.
ive had good luck with these cameras.

My current cam also only supports 2.4. I'm now leaning towards this one that was mentioned to be in the home automation sub:

I've been using these tp-link gigabit POE switches. The 5 port is $50 and the 8 port is $100. They're unmanaged, and the power budget won't let you max every port, wattage wise, but I'm powering three cameras from one (one Amcrest and two Dahua), and I could fill the last port with another camera without going over budget, easily. Haven't had any problems with them.
um.. something not right with your setup.
i have these cameras.

my buffered frames are 40 20 pre and 20 post.
im using just under 3gb of ram for all 6 cameras.
the shm is currently at 24% and i have 24gb of ram. SHM buy default is half your ram.
do you have the encoder set to passthrough? you dont want to reencode the stream, that eats cpu and ram.
Thanks for the suggestions! The camera I'm using is a Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I is rated at 30fps (1920 × 1080). Right now, it's running ~25fps, though it looks choppier than that.
I'll play with the settings and see what I can accomplish. Thanks again!
On the Android device, checkout the app IP Webcam. It basically turns your phone into an IP Camera that can be added just like any other wireless camera.

For the iPhone, good luck!
