Gold: 11149. Killed by an Ogre while Paralyzed on D16.
This was a seriously tough run. Funny I died just as I actually thought I was going to make it since I finally got my Plate and War Axe to +4 and had enough strength. Both were risked without an ID first - My initial War Axe was cursed, but I had 3 remove curse scrolls in total, and I soon after found a second War Axe which turned out to be +1.
I made the mistake of firing a Paralysis trap (on purpose) not noticing the vents behind me, a stupid mistake. Me and my Troll were paralyzed - the 2 Ogre's in front of me both instantly had a free hit.. Dead.
D7-14 were really tough since I was using both without enough strength and had sucky staffs (2xDiscord, Firebolt, +3 Lightning).
Detect Magic didn't come until around D14 I think. Also had a lovely +3 Clairvoyance ring which helped a lot.
Oh I must tell about D7 madness.. I went down to D8 and 'I think' fired an alarm trap before going back up to finish exploring it.
Baring in mind I had killed almost everything on D7, there were suddenly Jellies and Ogre's. Back towards the stairs I see a 'horde' of mobs - screenshots is best here, one before and one with my solution Screenshots
I thought I was dead for sure as I couldn't even kill a single Ogre in melee, but I made it with some ingenuity. I think I pulled every mob from D8 as it was empty when I finally went down. Strange they all entered D7 together? A bug maybe?
Escaped with 3 Lumenstones and a T.Horror (hehe)!
Score: 81188
This run was very nice, I felt in control the entire time right down to D27.
The combo of Entrancement / Discord and ally's were the strong parts. Oh and the Undead Immunity Splint mail - wow never seen that before, it was awesome. Late on I had a powerful Conjuration staff which which rounded things off, I probably could have got even more Lumenstones to be honest although it was risky with so many dragon's and no telepathy.
D1 took /5 entrancement. D2 took /3 Discord
D15 almost died to paralyze + spark turret (gladly it shoots slowly)
D15 Unicorn ally
D16 Starving - D18 found mango (Unicorn kept me alive all that time!)
D21 Horror ally
D22 lost unicorn to dragon fire
Back to D21 for Priestess
D22 lost priestess - stupid 3rd kraken spawned (were only two from previous telepathy - both dead!)
D23 - found /2 Conjuration and 2nd commutation alter - Commuted with +6 splint
D23 - found Broadsword unable to test so travel back to D19 to commute with +3 War Pike - broadsword has bad runic! (Mercy) D26+D27 still had telepathy + mapping which gave me full control of these depths and I could see exactly where all 3 Lumenstones were after a short time (close together!). Dragon's not a problem with /7 Entrancement, /8 Conjuring and a Horror ally.
D28 too many dragons together incl. a pack of 5, turned back.
Found food at D13 on my way up hidden in a tiny room in the top right corner - explains why I nearly starved earlier.
I thought I'd upload my recording too since it was a nice run here
Brogue-AUDIO has better contrast between lit/dark tiles, although it can still appear rather subtle depending on your monitor setting and ambient brightness. Additionally "disable color effects" key has another function where it switches to different approach at rendering out of FOV tiles which further improves visibility of lit/dark tiles.
It would seem that mariadb replaces mysql, and is "almost" 100% compatible.
https://www.archlinux.org/news/mariadb-replaces-mysql-in-repositories/
I think what I need to do next, is start an sql/maria server or service or both, and maybe make it autostart for future use.
edit: eeew, gross: "the biggest problem with MySQL situation is that it becomes more and more closed source. Oracle stopped publishing regression tests[1], informative security advisories, they even hide bug reports and not include them in release notes[2]. Very often their bzr repository is falling behind new releases[3]."
I've played Brogue 1.7.4 on my ipad 2 for a couple years now, no problems. Not sure what update you're referring to. I do see it's not in the app store anymore....prob'ly can download thru a website though. I'll check....
(clickity clickity clickity)
...yep, found it here: https://sites.google.com/site/broguegame/home
OP, here are some instructions to build the app bundle, which is what you can safely move to your Applications folder. Someone should probably open a PR or issue in github to enhance the macOS instructions.
Make sure you download the source code of the <code>release</code> branch, or any tagged commit. The master
branch contains a few backward-compatibility breaking changes that will be released as "CE 1.10" in the future, but not yet. The release
branch is what usually becomes the next planned release. If you are familiar with git, you can also clone the repository, but make sure you checkout the release
branch afterward: git checkout release
Install Homebrew, then SDL and dylibbundler: brew install sdl2 sdl2_images dylibbundler
Run these commands to build the app bundle: cd BrogueCE && make clean && make MAC_APP=YES Brogue.app
If you want to package the libraries with the bundle so that it can run on another machine without installing SDL first, there is an extra step: cd Brogue.app/Contents && dylibbundler -cd -b -x MacOS/brogue
Run Brogue.app
to start the game. You can move it to Applications too.
Figured I would run things this week and give our usual host a welcome break. (Also I'm ready to play after a week off!)
This is Sunday Seed number 102.
Here's how to participate:
Download Brogue 1.7.4
Ctrl-click on New Game in and enter this week's seed, generated by an ancient and arcane ritual: 446441480
Play the seed once and come back here to post your score, cause of death, GOLD amount and share your experiences and observations to become a better player.
We're all on the honor system - no save scumming, replaying or reading this thread before your run is complete.
good luck!
Opening screen should look like this
With no programming experience, completely removing an item would be a challenge. For example, you could make one or two very simple changes and prevent it from being generated in the dungeon, but there would still be lots of code and data there for it, which you would need to provide for any new items you add. I'd say going straight for trying to add an item makes more sense, that way you'll know when it fully works. Two good resources I know for C are TutorialsPoint (brief tutorial aimed at programmers) and cppreference (very technical language reference). From-scratch tutorials, no idea, people don't often start off learning C. Good luck!
You might need to download the linux source code from https://sites.google.com/site/broguegame/ and patch '174scum051.patch' over it. Let me know if that works!
If you get it working, I can host a linux binary so other people don't have to repeat the process.
