I have been aware of Buddhism for as long as I can remember. I did a small school project on it when I was 15, etc.
Came into Buddhism a few years ago through Zen, lost interest after a while, and called it a day. Anxiety struck me really hard in late January this year, and it kept at me for about 2 months. My spouse eventually just told me to check out Buddhism (spouse comes from China) to try and get things under control. I purchased a book by Thich Nhat Hanh, The Miracle of Mindfulness, and really got into it. "Discovered" Chan through the movie "Shaolin" (great movie, recommend it), and it went from there.
I admit I kinda go back and forth now. My primary practice is Pure Land anymore.
Check out Grass Mountain it is a transcript of a 7-day Chan retreat with one of the modern masters of the tradition. He gives a lot of specific instructions, insights, etc. into this method. Just note the term "hua-to" is referring to the essence of penetrating koan.
I am the author of these books, originally written in Brazilian Portuguese. I have just translated them to English and I’m happy to share them with anybody.
I am sharing these books myself – I own them – so don’t feel like you are stealing anything. I am also not asking you to “register to my website”, nor to provide any personal information. Nothing. You just click the button at my website and it will download. Thus, please don’t treat me like a thief, or a salesperson.
If you do like the books and wish some printed copies, or maybe an "official ebook" which you could review, sure, you can buy them from Amazon and support me. But I myself have little money, and care little about money.
This might be off some interest to you, although I understand it is supposed to be an introductory text
And then there is of course the first book of the duology penned by Dumoulin, although the author of the above title does seem to see some problems with him
Unfortunately, I'm not experienced in this practice. I typically stick with nianfo and mindfulness of breathing.
Master Sheng Yen did "write" a book on it. This is the book.. It's a collection of talks from hua-tou retreats, and, if it's anything like his Silent Illumination book, it'll lead you in the direction you need/want to go.
