I use a toddler bumper pillow for the same back support as you and I also have used a finger to unlatch my LO to give the boobies a rest. Now, at 12 months, she unlatches herself and rolls away to sleep, then comes back later to nurse. I also have a few knee pillows that help the hips tremendously. They still hurt, but sometimes I can barely lift a leg to dress myself without them. This one is a bit stiffer and holds the knees more aligned, but doesn’t have the strap. You could absolutely safety pin one on, I just haven’t yet.
Seconded! We had one like this (I bought a used one for $10 on Facebook Marketplace) for the early days. My son wanted to be close so I'd fall asleep with a big pillow propping up my arm and I'd sleep with my hand on his chest. He seemed to tolerate that ok. The only bummer about in-bed bassinets is that usually you can't fit a husband in bed because they take up a lot of space. So my husband used to sleep on the sofa or blow-up mattress in a different room. It's all about survival when they're so small.
I bought this one. It has a wide firm base and its sides are not as high as the dock a tot. I didn't notice any issues with temperature. The side parts are also perfect for resting your head on to let your bub feel you breathing.
I usually stay in bed with my 13 month old, but I did buy bed rails so I can sneak away if I need to.
These have really been a lifesaver! Especially now that my toddler is so mobile.
We used this one and I was very happy with it. Regalo Swing Down 54-Inch Extra Long Bed Rail Guard, with Reinforced Anchor Safety System https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005EHNL3M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_LNldGbXNYTB0G
I use a 4 inch covered box spring from amazon and I really like it. Feels perfect height for cosleeping. Unfortunately it gone up a lot in price since i bought it
🤔 I know for safe bed sharing you definitely shouldn't do a traditional swaddle. But I wonder if the ones that allow hands to be up by the face and more mobile are safe enough? I'm pregnant with my first, so no first hand experience, but if I were in your shoes I'd probably look into one of those hands-up swaddle transitioners that allow baby to push up on their hands and wave their arms around, but stifle the more reflex enough to help them stay asleep. Some of them are marketed as being designed to increase safety specifically by allowing enough mobility to roll.
I looked on Amazon, where I got it, and it looks like almost all of the "baby nest loungers" have been pulled. I guess with the dock-a-tot recall or whatever, companies got scared of selling them. The link below is what it looked like (that's just a replacement cover though), you could cinch up the bottom to make the sides tighter, or let it out to make it more flat. It was nice for us because my baby's face was above the sides all the time, there really was not any risk of her suffocating.
The mosquito net thing is not a safe sleep I option.
I highly recommend you get a copy of Safe Infant Sleep by James Mckenna and read this to make the safest cosleeping choices based on current research. It's available as an ebook or hard copy.

You do not need to burb bub over night - the goal is to get everyone back to sleep as quickly as possible and this is an unnecessary step
https://mumsandbabies.com.au/news/how-can-i-help-my-babys-gut/
If you are sleeping in c curl with no clothing near bubs face you should be fine to go to sleep while feeding. Bubs will roll from breast when they are finished eating. I like a tight fitted tank top that I can pull under my breast when feeding for this reason.
This latex topper was linked in a few other posts asking a similar question. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UYGANN4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JJPH5MHCBW2H2X7JD6T8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I can’t speak to it personally but I’m thinking of ordering it myself to try.
I watched a cosleeping mom on YouTube detail her journey and she recommended a bed rail, we bought it for about $100 off of amazon: Bed Rail for Toddlers Extra Long... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07Z6L92ZQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
We haven’t installed it yet as she isn’t rolling yet so right now we just use a pool noodle under the sheet as a bumper but there were some 3- sided options similar to this too :)
You can definitely ditch the c curl. As soon as mine could roll he would get as far away from the c curl as he could. He still wants nothing to do with physical contact at night (17 months). I started with blankets at about 12 months during nap times and watched how he handled them. He's never had any issue keeping them out of his face or moving them if they bother him in his sleep. However he doesn't like being under a blanket most of the time so I used a sleep sack throughout winter and a sleep suit now that it's hot.
If you think baby proofing the room might be difficult you could do the giant cot approach.
Double bed on floor inside a mesh playpen. Creates a giant cot.
As long as you fill any gaps between mattress and gaps safely (I.e no soft pillows) it becomes effectively a big pack and play.
We got this frame Zinus King Bed Frame also for the same reason. If it can be delivered to your area, it was very reasonably priced and only raised the mattress 7 inches. I’m a bad mom and left my 5 month old unattended for 4 seconds to pee the other day and he fell off onto the carpet and was only startled upset. I plan to not let it happen again, but it made me feel so much better about the purchase lol I tried a floor bed first and it was murder on my back ☹️
these v neck night dresses I wear shorts underneath since I'm a bit tall, and they're more like tunics.
I got a few of these hoodies. I removed the string for safety.
>does that mean baby is on the outside of the bed part of the night and in between two adults part of the night?
Yes, but we bought a king sized mattress specifically for bed sharing (and we're in the US where king mattresses are huuuuge). Baby stays in the same position all night and I move with my cushion from one side to the other, so there is always the width of me plus my pillow (at least) between baby and dad or baby and the edge of the bed.
I'm not at all worried when she's between me and my husband because my lower arm extends well past her body so if he starts to move in our direction I wake him up. I might be more worried about the edge of the bed when she starts rolling but our mattress is practically on the floor (actually just on this bunkie board and we're going to put a foam camping mattress on top of our thick carpet just in case she ever rolls out.
Pacifier was a game changer for us too. Also my baby rejected 5 different shapes before my husband found one similar to my nipple. We use the flattish Nuk. Keep trying different ones if you can afford it, or try a Buy Nothing group or FB moms group for second hand pacifiers and sanitize them. It’s made our life soo much easier. With that said it still requires close watching and trial and error to figure out when the baby is done swallowing and simply non nutritive sucking, I still have a hard time telling sometimes. Kellymom.com has a helpful description of what to look for.

For the top of my bed I have a wedge pillow like this.
For the side car crib, I have a rolled up quilt (the flat kind not the puffy kind) bridging the gap on the far side, with his mattress flush with my bed.
My husband doesn't feel safe so he moved into the guest room (he also has an annoying schedule so win/win there mostly).
My daughter bed shares as well. 3yo. I stay in the middle of them. If I need to switch boobies, I do like a super c curl around my 5 month old so that I can feel both of the children's bodies and use my knees/ arms to kind of block her from snuggling too close, but mostly try to stay awake until we can roll back.
And where you and your husband sleep should be about what feels safe to you. I have long hair which is technically not safe unless I put it up. But for years, I sleep with it up and off my neck/ body, so I've always been in that habit and trust that I can keep it away from baby. (though I did braid it when he was younger). You know your sleep habits and your husband knows his
I use the hicapop inflatable bumpers. You can buy in single or double packs. They’re also portable so I’ve traveled with them which has been super handy. [hicapop bumpers](amazon.com/dp/B01DTBKPWO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZYJ79KXVC44K89QP14X1?psc=1)
I use these can’t recommend them enough. But if you’re only using one, you’ll need to anchor them to a wall or push furniture up against them for support or something. I use only two, and the ends that are up against the walls are a bit wobbly since they’re so tall, and only supported by the bottom.
? None of what I mentioned would take away under bed storage?

Amazon, I got this one: Toddler Bed Rail Guard for Kids... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E8JP3TG?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I would say it's not safe for a small baby to roll into as there's a bit of a gap between it and the bedframe, but I put a pillow against it to cover the gap.
The dogs whined for a while but adjusted. The cats screamed for a while but they adjusted too. I bought these mice and hid them around and it seemed to help the cats with nighttime boredom

I live in Japan and I don't air our futons every day. Now in winter, I just never do because if it's not snowing it's raining, and if not it's too windy lol. I fold it in half in the same room floor, try to alternative which side I fold up every day but that's it. Sometimes I don't even bother. We have something like this under the futon though.
I got this[https://www.amazon.ca/AGIMOLI-Y-Strap-Toddlers-Guardrail-Reinforce/dp/B08HWVZGBJ/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?crid=F5GA120FV686&keywords=queen+bed+rails&qid=1643638229&sprefix=queen+bed+rails%2Caps%2C124&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5j... works a charm! In terms of safety, it’s comparable to a pack n play with the mesh siding.
Ya my bedroom is always 3-4 degrees below the thermostat so it was helpful to get thermometers, and now I adjust the thermostat for the temp I want in the bedroom. I got really cheap ones on amazon and they match my nest sensor so they seem accurate (Meggsi 2 Pack Mini Digital Hygrometer Gauge Indoor Thermometer, LCD Monitor Temperature Outdoor Humidity Meter for Humidors Greenhouse Cigar Jars Incubators Guitar Case, Fahrenheit (℉) or Celsius(℃) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WJJ9265/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_93HC36HWQTM3ZW8VHJ80?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)
I also got a space heater as our HVAC went out this year and I've been using that just to heat the bedroom and it seems to use a lot less energy so that might be a solution for you so you don't overheat the whole house just because the bedroom is cold.
This is similar to ours. We have had ours awhile so not sure on exact brand. I don't know how to do pics on Reddit, but we have the crib attached to our bed and the crib mattress is pushed to our mattress. The bumper is pushed in the space between the crib back rail and mattress.
I use a regular mattress on the floor. The hard surface of the floor supports the mattress so you don’t need a box spring. And I use these bed rails.. Ive found they are a snug fit and safety wise are no different from a pack n play with the mesh/fabric sides. They don’t cause a dip at the edge of the mattress where baby could get stuck or anything. I’ve been using them since baby was about 5mos. (Before that we had a smaller bed rail but of course he started crawling and I didn’t want him rolling off lol!) He’s 14 mos now and they are still effective. I plan to phase them out once he’s able to climb up and down on the bed without falling and then hopefully encourage some independent sleep.
Our sidecar crib has a sliding mattress holder (not holes with set heights) so it can be set to match the mattress height exactly.
This is what we have (sorry, in German, but I don't know if these exist in the US): https://www.amazon.de/FabiMax-Beistellbett-BASIC-Matratze-Nestchen/dp/B07D2PDR2J
I switch sides all night. I also don't want her nursing on just one boob, either.. If you're worried about rolling off the bed there are products you can put on the side of your bed. I use this: (1-Pack) Extra Long Bed Rail for Toddler | Soft Foam Bed Bumper for Kids | Baby Bed Guard | Child Bed Safety Side Rail | Designed to fit Twin, Full, Queen & King Size Beds https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QNZV8KW/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_DZP1TG3DDK268Y7ARGN3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I’m eyeing this merino nursing top. Might suit you too. I already wear wool socks and a beloved pair of cashmere joggers.

So my five month old son and i have been cosleeping since leaving the hospital (our hospitals forbid cosleeping due to possible danger from mom being medicated among other reasons). I distinctly remember this stage you’re referencing. I have two life saving tips that helped me get through when my husband went back to work. 1) leg peddling exercises for babies! Here is a youtube link. I did these after every feeding all day and all night. My son eagerly lifted his legs for me to peddle and press out gas when he caught on. Bonus, by about 3 months he was pulling his legs up to pass gas on his own. Maybe normal development but i took credit for him learning that. 😂
2) this wedge pillow from amazon saved my hips (side lying is a valuable way to breastfeed but hurts my pelvis…on that note its a good position for baby to pass gas while feeding) and i could sleep safely with him at my breast so those constant feedings didn’t really wake us. For those few weeks he wouldn’t sleep unless in my arms. It definitely is a normal, exhausting, temporary stage.

Hi, Mama. I recommend Lyndsey Hookway’s Holistic Sleep Coaching book.
She includes a lot of gentle techniques for moving toddlers into their own sleep space.
Best wishes for you and your family!
My husband and I have been sleeping on a Emoor futon with a grass tatami underneath for 4 years. We just had a baby and it's now perfect for cosleeping.
> Futon
We didn't have an ideal mattress either so we used this on our bed: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01LZRRLTA/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_S6Q7CG618JB5EDGJ9P74
But we ended up shifting our baby into his own crib, near our bed but totally separate, after a week or so. We all slept better that way, and we never really got side-lying nursing to work anyway. (So I had to get up to nurse even when we were bed sharing!)
Avoid the dock-a-tot as it is soft sided and not safe for sleep...but the style above has stiff plastic sides with mesh in parts. It would probably work on the floor too during newborn phase.
You mentioned medication and brain fog, maybe you've already done this but I would discuss with your healthcare provider whether any of that affects your sleep and whether it would be an additional risk in a bed-sharing situation. Broadly speaking, sharing a room or a floor is just another form of cosleeping, so if that's important to you, you might want to explore those options more so than bed-sharing.
I don’t have a mattress recommendation, but for keeping sheets tight, I use these straps. They really make all the difference. I think I have 4 of them. One end to end and 3 along the sides.
I found this one and ordered it. I couldn’t wait for the wedge to come back in stock 😅
I swear by the wedge pillow I stole from the hospital. This is the one. Having it shoved under my back so I could fully lean against it was the only thing that helped the back pain.
I did a lot of research and ended up with this one: [1-Pack] Toddler Bed Rail Bumper | Bed Bumper for Toddlers | Kids Foam Safety Bed Guard Rail for Toddlers | Bed Side Rail for Twin Bed, Queen, King https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DTBKPWO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_TKHWC6GJP0TQ3MFG7QKS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. We also have a king bed. It doesn’t go from end to end, but it covers most of the space from the pillows down. I really like it! It’s super secure and sturdy. I have it on the mattress, covered by both a mattress protector and the fitted sheet.
this is the one we got. The rails gaps are pretty big so I have mesh crib liners. I bought these. 2 sets are needed to cover a full sized bed.
Edit: I bought a purple mattress as we did not have any extra mattresses lying around. The standard purple is only about 10 inches tall it seems firm enough for our purposes, and leaves about 9-11 inches of rail above it. Obviously the fatter your mattress the less rails you have.
My little guy (15.5 months) wears the Love To Dream 0.2 TOG sleep suit + a onesie (or PJ top) when he naps. We keep the house at 72F during the day. I love it. It’s very lightweight and he seems really comfortable. Sometimes I’ll put a lightweight sheet over his legs too.
Overnight we keep it much cooler (68F) so he wears the heavier version of that same sleep suit then.
**edit: I realized after I posted the link they’re out of stock on the 12-24 month and Amazon is only showing 6-12 month. Make sure you check the age range if you decide to order.
Hey it’s not clear to me from your post what is unsafe about the bed. Assuming the bed is hard enough for the age of your kid and the only remaining concern is falling off ... you can push the bed up against the wall on 2 sides if that is possible. If you have one side up against the will you can consider sleeping sideways and put the kid between the wall and you. Also you can make bumpers on the side with rolling up blankets and sticking them under the mattress pad. Buying a bumper works well for traveling too like this. Hope they has helped!

Any crib that converts into a 3-sided toddler bed can be used as a sidecar. You can use ratchet straps or strong rope to secure it to your bed frame.
